Chief Joseph’s Surrender Speech, October 5, 1877
By chief Joseph

Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before, I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our Chiefs are killed; Looking Glass is dead. Ya Hool Hool Shute is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young man who say yes or no. He who led young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are — perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my Chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever.

Churchill was one of the finest at rhetoric in the nation of Britain when he wanted to do a rally call in terms of the speech to rally his troops for the fight in the world war.

This is the speech that was delivered and it was rather emotive in its content.

Blood Toil, Tears, and Sweat is in the speech "We shall fight on the beaches" but in a later version specifically written for the radio.

The original speech did not contain this allusion.

Final answer:

Churchill's 'We Shall Fight on the Beaches' speech contains emotive language that emphasizes determination, though the phrase 'blood, toil, tears, and sweat' is not included in it.

Explanation:

Emotive language is used in Winston Churchill's We Shall Fight on the Beaches speech to stir emotions and rally support from listeners. Examples from the speech include the repetition and rhythm in 'we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills', which emphasizes determination and resilience. However, the phrase 'blood, toil, tears, and sweat' is not part of this speech but from an earlier speech Churchill gave to the House of Commons on May 13, 1940. In the We Shall Fight on the Beaches speech, Churchill uses emotive language to convey a sense of steadfastness in the face of adversity, inspiring hope and national pride.

Read this excerpt from The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.

Akela never raised his head from his paws, but went on with the monotonous cry, "Look well!" A muffled roar came up from behind the rocks – the voice of Shere Khan crying, "The cub is mine. Give him to me. What have the Free People to do with a man's cub?" Akela never even twitched his ears: all he said was, "Look well, O Wolves! What have the Free People to do with the orders of any save the Free People? Look well!"

Based on the imagery in this excerpt, which conclusion can be made about Akela?

Akela quickly loses patience with someone as cowardly as Shere Khan.

Akela is a ferocious fighter that will fight an enemy to the death.

Akela has trouble keeping his control over the pack of wolves.

Akela keeps calm in stressful situations and is not easily upset or disturbed.

Answers

Akela keeps calm in stressful situations and is not easily upset or disturbed.

Explanation:

Akela is a gray lone wolf and the leader of the Pack. He is wise and fair, making decisions and keeping the Pack working and strong from the top of Council Rock.

He went out of his way to protect Mowgli as a cub and this debt is repaid when Mowgli saves the jungle from the red dogs. Akela is a source of great knowledge and inspires great respect from the rest of the Pack.

He's kind and honorable, unlike most of the other wolves. The younger wolves want Akela gone, because they feel Akela is old and they feel they don't need a leader.

Write an argument about whether it's better to volunteer with an environmental group in your community or a national group.

Answers

In modern life, I think we all have had that desire to make a huge change/ impact in a community, especially since we have all been cooped up in quarantine for the past couple of weeks. But, first of all, if you have been wanting to make a change, how are you going to do that while trapped in the confined living space known as your house? Well, the first thing I'd say to do is to think about how you want to help. If I could suggest anything I'd say you should volunteer for an environmental group, but how are you going to decide between volunteering for an environmental group in your community, or a national environmental group.  There is an abundant amount of reasons for why it is better to volunteer for a local group, but I am only going to discuss the ones that stick out to me the most. Those reasons are that a small group of people versus a big group of people will make more of an impact on the community, and that it makes people want to keep their community clean.

First thing's first, let's talk about how it is better to volunteer in a community group because a small group of people will make more of an impact on the community than a big group of people. An article by FrontStream about "How community service impacts more than just the community" states that "Volunteering not only makes an impact on the greater community, but it impacts your family and friends directly... This will teach them that giving back is not only the right thing to do, but helping others and the environment is investing in their future. It’s also a nice opportunity to create group volunteer events, which you and your friends can participate in to make an even bigger impact." It's what I would call a chain reaction. Once someone sees another person doing something impactful, it's just their natural instinct to do the same. A study by Psychology today found that "copying the behaviour of the majority is a sensible, adaptive behaviour." If that is the case, then that means that if you are volunteering for a local environmental group, then it will make more people in the community want to volunteer, causing more of an impact in a community than a national group.

The next topic that should be discussed is that it is better to volunteer in a local community because it influences people in the community to continue to keep there community clean. Again, this is similar to the chain reaction discussed in the previous paragraph. A 2011 report, “Social Impact of Volunteerism,” published by the Points of Light Institute state a numerous amount of ways in which volunteering promotes civic engagement. One of those ways being how it makes others feel obligated to continue to keep their community clean. If people see that a specific area is covered in filthy garbage, they are more likely to litter themselves, but if they see that an area is squeaky clean, they will most likely take the time to find a garbage can, and throw out their junk. Many years ago I was walking down the street in a slightly ghetto community, and there were wrappers covering the grass. I hate to admit it, but I decided to follow the trend of littering, and just throw a single candy wrapper on top of the already covered grass. I didn't feel bad about it because other people where doing the same, and never though twice about it, but when I was walking in the downtown area, everything seemed to be in it's perfect place. There were no wrappers in sight, so I ended up spending the extra time to find a bin. This is why it is better to volunteer in a local community. Volunteering in a local environmental community has the ability to influence people in the community to continue to keep it clean.

With all these facts about how it is better to volunteer with an environmental group within a community, there has to be some pros for volunteering with a national group, right? You see, if you volunteer for a national group you are likely to meet many people which is awesome, and you will be able to help out more communities, but what you have to realize is that  you are just 1 out of the thousands of people who also volunteer for that national organization. Don't forget, you'd have to travel a lot too. With these as factors, it makes better sense on why volunteering for a local environmental group is the preferred choice.

Now that we have established that volunteering for a local environmental group is better than volunteering for a national one because a tiny group of people will make more of an impact on the community, and seeing a clean community causes people to want to keep their community clean, I think we know what we should do after this pandemic passes. The time to volunteer is soon. So, let's strap our boots on and get ready to make a huge impact. The cleanliness of your local community is in your hands. Good luck.

i you know the latin prefix pre means before you can probably guess the meaning of the word prehistoric which word in this sentence can help you figureout whether your guess was correct

Answers

The word 'before' in the sentence suggests that 'prehistoric' means before written history, relating to a time when there were no written records by humans. The term covers periods like the Paleolithic and Neolithic and is not derogatory but indicates the absence of written documentation before around 3000 BCE.

The word in the sentence that can help you guess whether your assumption about the meaning of prehistoric is correct is 'before.' The Latin prefix pre- indeed means before, aligning with the definition of prehistoric, which refers to times before the existence of written records by humans. Prehistoric eras, such as the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, provide valuable information about the ancient history of human societies despite the lack of written language.

It is essential to note that the term prehistoric is not pejorative; it simply relates to a period before written history was established, which is roughly marked as before c. 3000 BCE in the West. This term covers a vast expanse of time, including when early humans displayed remarkable innovation with the creation of tools during the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. The discovery of new evidence, such as early forms of written language, has the potential to shift our understanding of these prehistoric times.
