JEANNETTE: I’ve perused this bevy of travel pamphlets and I have no inkling of where I want to go on vacation. I thought about attending a performance at the city’s amphitheater; however, the city will be in bedlam with the performance and the sporting event occurring simultaneously.

MOM: I didn’t find a worthwhile destination either.

KENNETH: I’ve concluded that we should embark on an exhilarating and exciting trip this year—something we’ve never done before.

MOM: I don’t want to dismiss your idea, Kenneth, but where can find such an awe-inspiring experience?

KENNETH: I thought we could hike up Mount Whitney—it’s the highest peak in California. Because it’s located on the border of Inyo and Tulare counties, it’s also relatively close to home. Since we’re all strong athletes, I think that making the ascent is feasible.

JEANNETTE: (to Kenneth) That sounds like an awesome and memorable trip; however, there’s one problem with your plan—I suffer from acrophobia.

KENNETH: (with a look of befuddlement) Acro- what?

MOM: Acrophobia—it means that Jeannette suffers from a fear of heights. The root word phobia, meaning “fear of,” comes from the Greek word –phobos, which means “fearing.” Acrophobia is one of the most prevalent phobias in the country.

KENNETH: (to Jeannette) I recall a few years ago when we traveled on an airplane to Aunt Janice’s house—you were enthralled, peering out the window at the scene below.

JEANNETTE: I did have a tremendous time on the airplane; however, after that trip, my phobia gradually progressed, and now merely thinking about flying evokes terror and makes me squeamish. For me, riding the elevator to the top floor of a tall building is much like trekking up Mount Everest—it’s a gigantic feat of willpower.

MOM: Sometimes the best way to get over a fear is to face it. Perhaps we should try to climb the mountain so that Jeannette can tackle her fear. Do you think it would intolerable for you, Jeannette?

JEANNETTE: (with a look of trepidation) I don’t believe I would be very excited during the ascent, and I may not reach the apex; yet, I would savor the astonishing panoramic views. But what if I lost my composure and chose not to climb with you? I would be loath to jeopardize your trip.

DAD: Jeannette, we’re a family; we must always support each other. I believe that if you’re brave enough to attempt the climb, we should be more than willing to stop if you feel overwhelmed or extremely uneasy.

MOM: Just trying is an immeasurable accomplishment!

KENNETH: I’ll have a wonderful vacation as long as I get to view the noteworthy peak; everything else is secondary to me. What’s your verdict, Jeannette?

JEANNETTE: The thought of scaling a gigantic mountain is both scary and exhilarating. I must admit, the allure of Mount Whitney seems to trump my trepidation, and it would be incredible to overcome my fear. So, I suppose there is only one thing left to do—pack!

The universal theme dealt with in this passage is overcoming one's fears and adversities. (Option B).

What is the main theme and universal theme of the passage?

The passage revolves around the idea that with the support of family, individuals can overcome their fears and challenges. The main characters, particularly Jeannette, grapple with the prospect of climbing Mount Whitney, a challenging and fear-inducing feat for Jeannette due to her acrophobia. Kenneth suggests the mountain climb as an exhilarating and novel vacation idea, but Jeannette's fear poses a significant obstacle.

The family's response is crucial in understanding the main theme. Jeannette's fear is acknowledged, but the family, especially her father, emphasizes support and unity. The universal theme of overcoming fears and adversities is evident in Jeannette's internal struggle.

A circle has a radius of 6 in. The circumscribed equilateral triangle will have an area of:

Answers

The area of the circumscribed equilateral triangle is 36√3 square inches.

The diameter of the circle is twice the radius, so it's 2 × 6 = 12 inches.

Now, in an equilateral triangle, all sides are equal. If s represents the length of one side of the equilateral triangle, we have:

s = 12 inches

Now, the formula to find the area of an equilateral triangle is:

Area = (√3 / 4) × s²

Substituting the value of s:

Area = (√3 / 4) × (12)²

Area = (√3 / 4) × 144

Area = 36√3

So, the area of the circumscribed equilateral triangle is 36√3 square inches.

What is Chesterton’s central idea in this essay, and how does he introduce it?

Drmlulz AmbitiousThe essay initially pretends to be a critique of a type of self-improvement book popular at the time, which claimed to tell how to achieve success. These books defined success strictly in financial terms and assumed that if anyone follows certain steps, they will be able to duplicate the accomplishments of wealthy business owners. However, Chesterton’s review of these books includes a broader social criticism. The focus on the definition of success strictly in terms of money is central to his essay. But wrapped around that issue is the idea that each person can or should perceive success on the same terms as a business leader. He illustrates the point by saying a donkey is successful at being a donkey as much as a millionaire is successful at being a millionaire, so there is no point in calling a donkey a failed millionaire or vice versa.

To counter the common assumptions about success, Chesterton describes people in various walks of life and how each might more realistically succeed. In this description, he suggests that these books falsely pretend to help people succeed in their own social circles and encourage people to try to become something they are not and cannot ever be.

Chesterton says these writers tell the ordinary man how he may succeed in his career—if he is a builder, he may succeed as a builder; or if he is a stockbroker, he may succeed as a stockbroker. Chesterton increases his satire at this point, commenting that the authors say a grocer may become a sporting yachtsman; a tenth-rate journalist may become a peer, which is a British nobleman; and a German Jew may become an Anglo-Saxon. Obviously, these transitions are unlikely or even impossible. Chesterton then criticizes the main assumption of these books and the society that produces it. By claiming that average people can follow in the steps of business tycoons such as Rothschild or Vanderbilt, the book's author is taking part in "the horrible mysticism of money," in which people worship the unlikely possibility of achieving great riches.
