1.The Half Moon Voyage
by Spencer James
As the waves hit the exterior of the ship, Captain Henry Hudson announced to the crew of Half Moon that they were unsuccessful in finding a new passage to the East Indies, which was the original plan for their voyage. Vincent and Walter, two friends who were part of the ship's crew, listened carefully as the captain broke this news. Hudson declared that they were returning to the Netherlands, their homeland. The crew returned to work after the captain's announcement.
It was a sunny afternoon, and Vincent and Walter were in charge of cleaning the upper deck of the ship.
"First the news from the captain, and now this heat!" muttered Walter as he was dipping a rag into the water bucket.
"What happened, Walter? Why do you seem so irritated?" asked Vincent.
Walter angrily replied, "What happened?! Weren't you listening to the captain when he announced the disappointing news? This voyage was expected to be a productive one, on which we were supposed to find a new route to the East Indies, as the Dutch merchants had given us this ship for that purpose."
"Everything is going to be fine, Walter! We are not returning home empty-handed, as I am sure the land we just discovered will be of some value to the Dutch merchants. I believe in the captain and his plans. If we could not find the route this time, we can always go on another voyage. Don't be dismayed!" Vincent said calmly.
Walter thought about what his friend had just said to him, and it did seem true that the land they had just discovered could be of value since the land was untouched except for a few rural settlements. Moreover, he realized that he should not brood, and he certainly enjoyed the numerous occasions of natural beauty in the new land that nudged him to forget his nervousness and filled him with a new sense of peace and new-found calm.
Smiling, he looked at Vincent and said, "You're right, my friend, and being worried about something has never resulted in anything positive or productive."
"Exactly, Walter! That is why I never worry, and I believe everything happens for a reason," said Vincent.
The two friends smiled at each other and continued cleaning the upper deck as the ship rocked back and forth on the ocean waves, bound for home.

3. Here is the missing passage:

It was the year 3009. The door opened, and a whole new world welcomed us. I  wondered what we would encounter. The scout robots had searched to and fro and  came back with reassuring reports. There were water, plants, and animals. None of  the life forms were found to be as intelligent as humans. It was a planet that was  perfect for habitation. My family was chosen to be in the first group of settlers. We  were about to set foot on New Planet when another spaceship landed. We watched  as a door opened and tall mouse-like creatures, standing upright on their hind legs, stepped out. Our scout  robots flew into action and took scans of the creatures. They did not seem dangerous. Then, the tallest  mouseman said, "What are you humans doing here? We discovered this planet first, and we are going to  live here!" His voice sounded a little squeaky, and his long whiskers twitched now and then.  Captain Spirk came out to speak with the mouse people, "Now hear this King Rodent, we filed our  paperwork with the Office of Livable Planets. Everything is official. You’ll just have to find yourselves  another place to live."

"We both know how difficult that would be. There is no way we are leaving," King Rodent squealed.

"Excuse me, Your Highness and Captain Spirk, isn’t this an enormous planet? Why can’t we all live here  together in peace? We could help each other out as we learn about this place. We could work together to  protect ourselves from other invaders," I bravely suggested.

"You know, the kid is onto something there! This could be a new world with different intelligent species  living together in harmony. That could work! What do you say, Mousey?" Captain Spirk questioned King  Rodent.

"Okay, Captain Smirk, it’s a deal as long as we divide it evenly. We won’t settle for less than half," King  Rodent answere& The two leaders shook hands, and we all introduced ourselves to one another. That was  only the beginning.

List the four steps of the writing process covered in this lesson and explain why each one is important. Explain why brainstorming is a helpful step to take before writing. Then think about how to apply the writing process to writing a cover letter to accompany your résumé. What are some important elements you should consider when writing a cover letter?

Answers

The writing process can be described as a recursive process.  For many years, it was considered that writing was linear, and that 5 steps were needed:

Prewriting:  It's similar to Brainstorming. You organize your thoughts, your ideas. You plan how the text should be organized.

Drafting: It is your first attempt. Forget about grammar.

Revising: Now, you can add things, re-arrange words or paragraphs, take out.

Proofreading: this is the editing time. Mistakes, tenses should be considered. Clarity is essential.

Publishing: final stage. Ready to print or handed in toyour teacher

But in further research, it was proved that those stages overlap, as they are repeated throughout the writing process.

BRAINSTORMING is a helpful step to take before writing as you put into paper all your ideas ( you may use all or some of them) It is opening your mind to any idea that comes, however crazy it sounds.

COVER LETTER There are some key elements that should be considered when writing a cover letter:

Begin with your contact information ( on the left of the paper, towards the top,in block)Don't forget the date as with any normal letter!Include to who this letter is addressed ( hiring manager, head of the recruiting department, etc)Formal salutationOpening paragraph (explain how you learned about the opening position)Middle paragraph ( a summary of your background and why you are suitable for this job)Contact information and closing ( explain when you are available, thanks the person for his/her time and consideration)

Answer:

Question 1 -

1. Plan what you intend to write. This includes selecting a topic, choosing sources, and doing research. All of these steps will give you the information you need to write your paper with accuracy.

2. Prepare a first draft. This gets your ideas down on paper and provides a starting place for your writing.

3. Edit and correct the first draft. This is your chance to revise and correct any spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors. It also lets you add and delete information.

4. Write a final draft. This is the paper you will turn in as the finished project and should be free of any errors.

Question 2 -

Brainstorming is a good way to quickly gather ideas on paper. It helps create a plan in the writer’s mind and makes it easier to know where to start writing.

In a cover letter, try to include the name of the hiring manager so you can address the letter to that person. Find out what the position you're applying for requires so you can explain how your job experience and education meet those qualifications.

Point: Like the Haida myth, the Māori myth shows evidence that the culture values family relationships.

Illustration: In the Māori myth, children work together to separate their parents and become free.

Based on the point and evidence, which is the best explanation, or analysis, of the evidence?

Answers

This suggests that the Maori believe that teamwork helps family members achieve their goals.

Final answer:

The Māori myth's portrayal of children working together to separate their parents emphasizes the cultural value of family unity and the significance of communal goals within the cultural framework. It reflects the family structure as a cultural universal and serves to address fundamental cultural categories through the use of mythemes with binary oppositions. Indigenous myths are thus key in understanding cultural values as societies balance tradition and modernity.

Explanation:

The best explanation or analysis of the evidence provided by the Māori myth, where children work together to separate their parents to become free, suggests that it illustrates a cultural value placed on family relationships and kinship. The children's collective action to achieve freedom symbolizes the importance of a united family working towards a common goal. This can be seen as a reflection of how the Māori culture prioritizes familial bonds and the group's well-being over individual desires. This mirrors the broader concept that family units and their cohesion are crucial elements of cultural identity, as indicated by George Murdock's recognition of the family structure as a cultural universal.

In the context of indigenous cultures, myths are not just fantastical stories; they serve a deeper purpose. As per the anthropologist Lévi-Strauss's theory of mythemes, the critical points of a myth, such as actions and consequences, reflect universal concerns across cultures. These mythemes often feature binary oppositions like good/evil and blood relation/marriage relation, which help process fundamental cultural relations. Thus, the act of the children in the myth can be related to the fundamental cultural values regarding family structure and its pivotal role in society.

Furthermore, as indigenous cultures grapple with the balance of traditional lifestyles and the modern world, stories and myths continue to hold significance for understanding and navigating these cultural dichotomies, reflecting a journey from mythos to logos as described in indigenous philosophy.

Read the excerpt from "Mother Tongue."

Just last week, I was walking down the street with my mother, and I again found myself conscious of the English I was using, the English I do use with her. We were talking about the price of new and used furniture and I heard myself saying this: “Not waste money that way.” My husband was with us as well, and he didn’t notice any switch in my English. And then I realized why. It’s because over the twenty years we’ve been together I’ve often used that same kind of English with him, and sometimes he even uses it with me. It has become our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language I grew up with.

By sharing an anecdote about conversing with her mother and husband, she illustrates how language forms part of an intimate bond, becoming a unique mode of expression within families. This different sort of English for Tan is not about adhering to correctness but about conveying meaning and maintaining closeness. Moreover, it demonstrates that language ties deeply into one's identity and cultural heritage, expanding the understanding of English beyond formal standards. Tan's revelation while talking to her mother shows that communication in a family setting goes beyond standard language, reflecting emotions, history, and shared experiences.

Pero aquí y allá se produce de pronto la vibración de la vox humana. En la tradición, esa nota se ha producido sobre todo en las antiguas celebraciones de la Navidad. En literatura, se ha producido sobre todo en los cuentos navideños de Dickens.

Can you give options?

A crowd of workmen and curious passersby had formed all along the train. They had undoubtedly never seen a train with this kind of cargo. Soon, pieces of bread were falling into the wagons from all sides. And the spectators observed these emaciated creatures ready to kill for a crust of bread. –Night, Elie Wiesel

What is the author’s viewpoint about the experience in the passage?

A) The author believes the experience dehumanizes people both on and off the train.
B) The author believes much-needed rations are being shared with hungry prisoners.
C) The author believes this is a great kindness on behalf of the workmen and passersby.
D) The author believes the experience shows neither group of people understands the other.

Answers

The answer is A) The author believes the experience dehumanizes people both on and off the train.

In Night, Elie Wiesel shares his experience in the Nazi concentration camps. Through the book, he writes how the values of humanity are lost and some of the concepts he grow up with are useless now.

In this excerpt we can see how the situation happening inside the wagon is inhuman, because the people on the train are considered to be less than humans, more like animals, because their need for food makes them fight for something as minimal as a crust of bread.

One of the values that makes us human is the solidarity and the ability to share feelings with other humans. In this excerpt, we can also see that the passersby and the workers enjoy watching people fight for bread crumbs, therefore they have lost this value, becoming less human for it.

The options B and C are incorrect, because the passersby and the workmen are not sharing food rations with the hungry prisoners (only bread crumbs, that can't be considered rations), nor being kind with them. The option D can be also considered correct but is not as descriptive as the option A.

Amazon.com retrieved from Encyclopedia Britannica 9/2016 The Amazon.com business strategy was often met with skepticism. Financial journalists and analysts disparaged the company by referring to it as Amazon.bomb. Doubters claimed Amazon.com ultimately would lose in the marketplace to established bookselling chains, such as Borders and Barnes & Noble, once they had launched competing e-commerce sites. The lack of company profits until the final quarter of 2001 seemed to justify its critics. However, Bezos dismissed naysayers as not understanding the massive growth potential of the Internet. He argued that to succeed as an online retailer, a company needed to Get Big Fast, a slogan he had printed on employee T-shirts. In fact, Amazon.com did grow fast, reaching 180,000 customer accounts by December 1996, after its first full year in operation, and less than a year later, in October 1997, it had 1,000,000 customer accounts. Its revenues jumped from $15.7 million in 1996 to $148 million in 1997, followed by $610 million in 1998. Amazon.com's success propelled its founder to become Time magazine's 1999 Person of the Year. The company expanded rapidly in other areas. Its Associates program, where other Web sites could offer merchandise for sale and Amazon.com would fill the order and pay a commission, grew from one such site in 1996 to more than 350,000 by 1999. Following Bezos's initial strategy, the company quickly began selling more than books. Music and video sales started in 1998. That same year it began international operations with the acquisition of online booksellers in the United Kingdom and Germany. By 1999 the company was also selling consumer electronics, video games, software, home-improvement items, toys and games, and much more. In three to four complete sentences, explain how the author introduces and develops his ideas. The author first

The author starts the text by giving the glimpse of the skepticism which Amazon.com had faced. The author develops the essay further into the challenges and struggles the company had to face throughout the years. The author then explains how much growth Amazon had by 1999.

The author introduces the topic by providing context about Amazon.com's inception, discussing skepticism from critics, potential competition from established bookselling chains, and Amazon's initial lack of profit. The development is effectively communicated using Amazon's growth stats and expansion into multiple sectors, its innovative business models, and Jeff Bezos's vision. This helps to understand the evolution and strategies behind Amazon’s massive success.

The author introduces the topic by providing background context on Amazon.com and surrounding concerns raised by financial analysts. The author discusses Amazon's initial lack of profit, skepticism from critics, and potential competition from established bookselling chains. To develop these ideas, the author utilizes factual information such as the company growth statistics and expansion of its product range and market strategy, effectively conveying the transformation of Amazon's business operations over time.

Amazon's strategy, as illustrated by the growth figures and the wide variety of products the company began to sell, showcases how it rapidly diversified beyond books to becoming a multisector online retailer. The author also highlights the innovative business models they implemented, such as the Associates program and international acquisitions, accentuating Amazon's tactical adaptation and resilience.

These strategies, according to the author, were instrumental in Amazon's success, demonstrating the founder, Jeff Bezos’s vision of leveraging the Internet’s massive growth potential. For instance, as stated in the text, the company grew exponentially from 180,000 customer accounts in December 1996 to 1,000,000 by October 1997 with drastic revenue growth.

Answer:

Emphasize Tubman's strength and determination.

Explanation:

This is most likely the reason why Greenfield uses nonstandard English in "Harriet Tubman." In this text, Greenfield wants to show the character that Tubman displayed in her life. We learn how determined she was to helping others and bringing them to safety and liberty. Greenfield conveys this strength of character and enduring spirit by employing nonstandard English when describing Tubman's speech.
