There are different characteristics for differentiating the members of different phyla in kingdom animalia.

The phylum is the level of organization just below the kingdom. In Animalia there are nine major phyla.

The first is porifera and it has a cellular level of organization. It is acoelomate and does not have symmetry.

After that the Coelenterata has tissue level of organization, radial symmetry and no coelom. They are essentially sessile, and have polyp or medusa body forms.

Ctenophora called comb jellies are radially symmetrical with tissue level of organization, no coelom and have external plates of ciliated plates called comb plates.

Bilateral symmetry is observed from platyhelminthes, they lack coelom and from this phyla organ & organ system level of organization is observed. Aschelminthes are pseudocoelomates and have a false coelom. From annelida onwards coelom is present. Annelids have segmentations (internal and external and are called roundworms. Arthropods have jointed legs and outer exoskeleton of cuticle.  Molluscs have a visceral hump and a muscular foot and often an exoskeleton of calcium and radula for feeding.

Echinodermates has radial symmetry and a water vascular system for locomotion, feeding, movement etc.

Hemichordates are worm-like with, proboscis collar and a trunk.

Cordata members have a notochord and a dorsal hollow nerve cord. And may have gill slits with limbs or fins
