Discuss the significance that segregation voting rights and education had on african American life in the South during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries

Answers

Answer 1
Segregation and racism had a huge impact on African-Americans in the South during the late 1800s and early 1900’s. One example of this would be public schools. The Plessy vs Ferguson case established the idea that there can be separate facilities for blacks and whites as long as they are “equal.” Despite this law, schools for African-Americans often had lower quality buildings and textbooks.

Another example of how African- Americans were limited during this time was when voting. Southern states passed laws such as a poll tax or literacy tests to prevent African-Americans from voting. A poll tax was a sum of money required to vote. This greatly affected African- Americans especially during the 1800’s because many of them did not have a lot of paper money due to their previous status as slaves. The literacy tests were extremely difficult reading comprehension tests that African-Americans usually failed during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. This was due to the fact that schooling was limited for this group of people.

Use this passage to answer the following question:

The Cotton Gin
Andrea Brecheen

The cotton gin was one of the most amazing and tragic inventions of early America. The cotton gin is credited to the brilliant and creative American inventor Eli Whitney. Because Whitney's invention made cotton harvesting easier, it allowed farmers in the South to increase production. The cotton gin simplified the process of removing the cotton from the seeds, a process formerly done by hand.

As a result, Southern plantations increased their production of cotton from 750,000 bales in 1830 to 2.85 million bales just 20 years later. Because of the increase in production, the farmers in South became even more dependent on cotton for revenue. This new reliance on cotton increased the need for slavery. More slaves were needed to farm the ever expanding cotton plantations. If Whitney had known the effects his invention would have on slavery, he never would have created it.

Additionally, the experience gained from working on other reform programs made women qualified to create the women's rights movement. For example, women who gained public speaking skills through participation in the temperance movement were able to use those skills to advocate for women's suffrage.

King Henry VIII’s decision to establish an independent English church produced which consequence during his reign

Answers

First Henry VIII moved to break away from the Catholic Church because the Pope would not grant him a divorce from Catherine of Aragon. He claimed it was because she had not produced him a son. They did have a daughter, Mary, together. Everyone knew the only reason he wanted it was because he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn. He broke away and started the Church of England. The King was the Head of the Church of England, so he could grant himself a divorce. This act resulted in him being excommunicated (kicked out and not allowed to practice in the Catholic Church). It also would set off a crusade by Spain and France to overthrow him and his Protestant descendants. They felt it was their Holy Duty to return England to the "true" faith of Catholicism.

Answer on apex is A: the English monarchy became more powerful by seizing the catholic churchs property

The actions of the Federal Reserve during Carter’s term resulted in Americans struggling to pay higher home and car interest rates. Americans enjoying lower home and car interest rates. most people losing their homes and cars because they couldn’t pay the higher interest rates. many people being able to buy more expensive homes and cars because of the lower interest rates.

Answers

Correct answer:  A) Americans struggling to pay higher home and car interest rates.

President Jimmy Carter struggled against a bad economy in the United States during his time in office (Jan, 1977- Jan, 1981).  When he entered office, the country was experiencing "stagflation" -- a combination of inflation and minimal economic growth.  The actions of the Federal Reserve Board, under chairman G. William Miller, contributed to further inflation problems.  The inflation rate went from 5.8% in 1976 to 7.7% in 1978.  That meant that interest rates for home loans and car loans for American consumers got steeper and more difficult to afford.  Then in 1979, the oil crisis hit as world oil production dropped in the wake of the Iranian Revolution.  In 1979, inflation in the US went up to 11.3%.  That only made matters worse.

In 1979, President Carter replaced Miller as chairman of the Federal Reserve, appointing Paul Volcker in his place.  Volcker continued to serve in that role under the Reagan administration also, and played a large role in bringing inflation back under control.

The actions of the Federal Reserve during President Carter’s term resulted in Americans struggling to pay higher home and car interest rates. Thus, option FIRST is correct.

What is a federal reserve?

The Federal Reserve System is the central banking system of the United States.

During his administration (Jan. 1977–Jan. 1981), President Jimmy Carter battled the U.S. economy.  The nation was undergoing "stagflation" when he became president, which is a mix of inflation and weak economic development.  Further issues with inflation were a result of the Federal Reserve Board's decisions under the leadership of G. William Miller.

From 1976 to 1978, the inflation rate increased from 5.8% to 7.7%.  This meant that American consumers had to pay higher and more expensive interest rates on their house loans and auto loans.

Then, in 1979, the oil crisis materialized as a result of a decline in global oil output following the Iranian Revolution.  Inflation in the US increased in 1979. Hence, option A is correct.

The correct answer is D. A big part of their economy depends on tourism, agriculture jobs, and the movement of goods.

The sun belt is constantly growing since it was in a very bad economic shape in the previous century. There is a lot of tourism in areas like Canada, Florida, Las Vegas, and there are a lot of agricultural jobs because of vast lands that have farms or ranches. Movement of goods is also important as the climate is good for transporting goods, especially since the invention of the air conditioning unit.

What does Michael Wood mean when he says “It was a rejection… of a whole way of understanding history”?

Answers

I'm a fan of historian Michael Wood!  One of my favorite items from him was the BBC documentary series, "In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great."

The quote you mention from Wood comes from his historical researches regarding India.  (You could also look for his BBC documentary series, "The Story of India.")  The "rejection of a whole way of understanding history" was the way that Wood described the actions of Asoka (or Ashoka -- you'll see both spellings).  Asoka was ruler from 268 to 232 BC of lands that would later become known as India.  Asoka was a great conqueror but also someone who found enlightenment through Buddhism.  After conquering the Kalinga region in eastern India, rather than feeling some great rush of pride or accomplishment because of their victory, Asoka felt guilty.  So he worked hard to improve the lives of the Kalinga people that he had conquered.  This was what Wood was referring to when he said Asoka's attitude/approach "was a rejection of a whole way of understanding history."  Conquest was not something to be celebrated triumphantly.  Rather, the conquerors had an obligation to those whom they had conquered.

The country created from parts of Serbia, Montenegro, and Austria-Hungary is Yugoslavia.

Yugoslavia was formed in the aftermath of World War I, on December 1, 1918, initially as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. It was established from the union of the State of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs (which itself was formed from territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire) and the Kingdom of Serbia (which included the previously independent Kingdom of Montenegro). Yugoslavia disintegrated in the early 1990s due to a series of political upheavals and conflicts, leading to the independence of its constituent republics. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia (now North Macedonia), and eventually Montenegro and Kosovo, all declared independence, leaving Serbia as the successor state to the former Yugoslavia.
