Do the benefits of raising the minimum wage outweigh the drawbacks?

Answers

Answer 1
It really depends on which perspective you're talking about. As a whole, though, I think it would not be much of an impact.
From the workers' perspective, raising the minimum wage would be a huge advantage, since, of course, people want to make more money in the same amount of time. They'd be happier to work and would like working better.
From the payer/boss' perspective, however, raising the minimum wage would not be a good thing, since they would need to pay more in a shorter amount of time. This could eventually pose problems for the business or company and lead to bankruptcy.
For society as a whole, if one minimum wage changes, many other businesses would take this as an advantage and sell things for even less. There'd be much more competition and there would also be inflation. So, for the financial society, there wouldn't be much of a benefit.
Raising the minimum wage, however, does help persuade people that are poor, that don't work, or don't have jobs to work. This could benefit us because it can decrease the amount of people on the streets (in which the government gives food and funds to) and save money for the government and taxpayers.

Hope this helps!

An american traveling abroad observes locals eating chocolate covered crickets. she expresses disgust to her traveling companions. she is exhibiting:

Answers

She is likely exhibiting ethnocentrism. This is being defined as a way of showing judgement towards to other cultures based on their own standards that they are accustomed of or in their own culture. The American likely acted that way after seeing crickets to be eaten by locals because it is not normal or a tradition for their culture to eat bugs or even cover them with chocolates as they eat it.

Final answer:

The American traveler expressing disgust at chocolate covered crickets is showing ethnocentrism, which is part of the culture shock experience, a feeling of superiority towards one's own cultural practices and a negative reaction to those of a different culture.

Explanation:

When an American traveler abroad expresses disgust at locals eating chocolate covered crickets, she is exhibiting a phenomenon known as ethnocentrism. This is a sociological concept where a person views their own culture as superior and others as inferior or strange. The disgust is a reaction to encountering unfamiliar food, which can be part of the larger experience of culture shock, as described by anthropologist Kalervo Oberg. Culture shock can lead to stress and frustration when interacting with a different culture, resulting in the initial rejection of the new experiences and glorification of one's own culture. Often, people don't question their own dietary habits, like eating cows or pigs, but find it hard to accept the food preferences of other cultures, leading to feelings of discomfort and judgment.

What region acted as “middleman” in the trade between the Roman and Han empires?

Answers

I think the route was the Silk Road, but I'm not sure of a specific country. Hope this helps a little!

Central Asia served as the middleman in trade between the Roman and Han empires, strategically positioned along the Silk Road which facilitated the exchange of silk, glassware, and various other goods and ideas.

The region that acted as a middleman in the trade between the Roman and Han empires was Central Asia. This region was pivotal due to its strategic position on the Silk Road, which was the major trade route connecting the two empires. While the Han Dynasty and Roman Empire had no direct trade connections, the extensive network of caravan routes across Central Asia facilitated the exchange of goods such as Chinese silk, which became highly sought after among the Roman elites, and Roman glassware, which was found in China. Central Asia did not only serve as a trade nexus, but it was also a zone of military engagement and cultural exchange, introducing ideas such as Buddhism to China.

During the Han Dynasty, the Chinese extended their territorial control into Central Asia to secure the Silk Road, ensuring the safe passage of merchandise and increasing the volume of trade. This included military campaigns to subdue the Xiongnu nomadic peoples, establishing tribute relationships with Central Asian states, and building a network of walls and watchtowers in the region. The Silk Road enabled the spread of not just material goods but also cultural practices, technological innovations, and religions across Eurasia, illustrating the dynamic interactions between diverse civilizations.

Jean Valjean's harsh punishment in 'Les Misérables' exemplifies an authoritarian government during a time influenced by utilitarian principles and the reforms inspired by Jeremy Bentham.

The treatment of Jean Valjean in Victor Hugo's Les Misérables reflects an authoritarian type of government. In the story, Valjean receives a severe punishment for a minor crime—stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family. This action aligns with authoritarian principles, which prioritize strict adherence to law and order, harsh penalties, and a central authority that exerts tight control over citizens. From the historical context mentioned in the texts, this treatment happened during a time when society was beginning to shift away from punishing the poor through imprisonment and instead focused on reforming through workhouses, penitentiaries, and asylums, attempting to transform transgressors into law-abiding citizens. The philosophy of Jeremy Bentham and the concept of utilitarianism were influential during this era, shaping the design and operation of the first modern prisons.

I believe the answer is: learning important lessons about life in America
A believer of cultural imperialism would view that their culture is superior compared to any other culture.
They tend to perceive every action that taken by other cultures as an effort to either to attack or mimic their culture.

Final answer:

A believer in cultural imperialism would suggest that watching American television at a Walpiri camp represents the spread of Western culture that may undermine indigenous practices and contribute to a global cultural homogeneity.

Explanation:

A believer in cultural imperialism might explain that people who watch American television in remote places, like a Walpiri camp in the Australian Outback, are experiencing the imposition of Western culture and values into their local traditions. This influence could potentially overpower and undermine the development and maintenance of indigenous cultures and practices. It is understood within this theory that many aspects of Western life, such as fast food, pop music, clothing styles, and social customs, dominate global media and may contribute to a homogeneous global culture that can erode local identities.

Cultural imperialism often suggests that transnational media corporations influence local cultures and may lead to a uniformity of cultural expressions, sometimes at the expense of original native traditions and values. As an example, international aid agencies might introduce non-native agricultural practices that do not suit the local environment, which can be seen as a form of cultural imperialism if it displaces traditional techniques and knowledges.

This concept also addresses larger issues of global power relations and the complicated nature of cultural exchange, notably when people from dominant cultures adopt elements of other cultures in ways that may be perceived as insensitive or inappropriate. Whether it's fashion choices or agricultural practices, cultural imperialism critiques the dynamics at play when cultural elements from powerful nations impact and potentially transform local cultures in other parts of the world.

In the late 1950s, a doctor reported in the journal of the american medical association that stomach ulcers could be effectively treated by having a patient swallow a balloon connected to some tubes that circulated a refrigerated fluid. he argued that, by super-cooling the stomach, acid production was reduced and the ulcer relieved. all 24 of his patients whom received the treatment were healed. why does this fall short of qualifying as an example of the scientific method

It falls short because There was no control group with which to compare his patients who received the treatment.
Which men that in the experiment above, nothing could prove that the improvement is directly caused by the refrigerated fluid.
If there is a control group, researchers could see whether the refrigerated fluid played any relevant role in the improvement.

The balloon method for treating ulcers does not align with the scientific method, which requires controlled experiments, reproducibility, and peer review. Marshall and Warren's discovery that H. pylori bacteria cause ulcers and can be treated with antibiotics provided a scientifically validated alternative treatment approach.

The treatment method involving swallowing a balloon to treat stomach ulcers by super-cooling the stomach lacks adherence to the scientific method because it does not seem to involve controlled experiments, reproducibility, or peer review. Additionally, by the 1980s, Dr. Barry Marshall and Dr. Robin Warren provided direct evidence that the bacteria H. pylori were the cause of most peptic ulcers, effectively treating them with antibiotics instead of cooling methods. Their persistence led to a paradigm shift in the medical treatment of ulcers despite initial skepticism from the medical community, which heavily relied on acid blockers and doubted the role of bacteria in such conditions. This historical context highlights the importance of utilizing the scientific method — with rigorous testing, publishable results, and acceptance by the scientific community — to validate medical treatments.

In an experiment in which a vocabulary test is administered to one group of subjects by a female experimenter and the same test is administered to another group of subjects by a male experimenter, the independent variable is?

Answers

The gender of the experimenter. This is the only manipulation in the experiment.
Final answer:

In the described experiment, the independent variable is the gender of the experimenter administering the vocabulary test. This is the factor that has been altered between the two groups in order to observe potential differences in the dependent variable, which would be the vocabulary test scores.

Explanation:

In an experimental study, the independent variable is the factor that the researcher manipulates to determine its effect on the dependent variable. In the given scenario, the independent variable is the gender of the experimenter administering the vocabulary test. This is because the experimenter's gender is the variable being manipulated or changed between the two groups, so as to assess its potential effect on the dependent variable, which in this case would be the scores or outcomes of the vocabulary test among the subjects.

Remember, in an ideal experimental design, the only difference between the experimental and control groups is the level of exposure to the independent variable. In this experiment, one group was administered the test by a female experimenter, and the other group by a male experimenter. Hence, the experimenter's gender remains our manipulated variable, or independent variable, throughout this experiment. Any differences in the test scores (the dependent variable) could be attributable to the independent variable, although other factors (lurking variables) could possibly come into play.

Worldwide, women are ________ likely than men to live in poverty, and they are ________ likely than men to be illiterate.

Answers

Final answer:

Women are more likely than men to live in poverty and to be illiterate globally. The 'feminization of poverty' indicates that women face higher poverty rates and systemic challenges that contribute to economic disparity and social inequalities.

Explanation:

Worldwide, women are more likely than men to live in poverty, and they are more likely than men to be illiterate. The term "feminization of poverty," coined by sociologist Diana Pearce in 1978, describes the phenomenon where poverty rates are higher for women than for men, a trend that has persisted for decades. Women, particularly in peripheral nations, face higher rates of poverty, inadequate healthcare, and malnutrition. Data shows that households headed by single women are twice as likely to live below the poverty line compared to those headed by single men. Furthermore, the global literacy rates reveal a disparity, where a significant portion of the female population in low-income countries remains illiterate.

In the context of economic disparity, women encounter several systemic challenges, such as earning less money for the same work when compared to men, higher rates of being single parents, and underrepresentation in decision-making positions. These factors contribute directly to the higher rates of poverty among women and also affect their children, linking to higher child poverty levels in female-headed households. Access to resources, such as education, healthcare, and credit, is often more restricted for women, impacting their overall well-being and perpetuating the cycle of poverty.
