Mercutio is much more lighthearted than Romeo, and this is shown over and over again through their discussion in Act 1, Scene 4 before the Capulet ball.

Romeo has been uses the phrases like "I have a soul of lead So stakes me to the ground I cannot move," after showing that has heart and soul are the heavy, that keeping him on the ground and not  be able to dance. Mercutio has been replied with "You are a lover; borrow Cupid's wings, and the soar with them above the common bound." The quote shows that he has a more positive outlook on love than Romeo does.

He has knows that Romeo has been obsessed with love, so he has been trying to get him to brighten up and have some fun. This has the contrast between the two characters which continues when the Romeo responds, "Under love's heavy burden do I sink." He has been using the fact that the Mercutio has pointed out that he has the lover to prove his despair even more. Mercutio has responds with the pun,  as it trying again to lighten the mood.

Therefore, Mercutio is much more lighthearted than Romeo, and this is shown over and over again through their discussion in Act 1, Scene 4 before the Capulet ball.
