Is this an imagery question Safe and sound like a hibernating bear waiting for winter to pass

Answers

lol

Imagery is when a sentence has descriptive details that help you see what the author wrote.

Example: The frail girl crept through the dark, dusty hallway. Her bare feet blue from the cold, stone floors.

so i would say that the sentence you provided was using imagery :)

Final answer:

Bears enter a deep sleep during winter, maintaining their body temperature and metabolic processes, and can easily be awakened, unlike the state of true hibernation. They have significant energy storage to last the winter, while smaller mammals like squirrels must eat during their hibernation period and need to store food.

Explanation:

The phrase ‘Safe and sound like a hibernating bear waiting for winter to pass’ suggests imagery related to bears and hibernation. However, it's important to note that bears do not enter true hibernation, but a state of deep sleep during winter where their body processes and temperature do not decrease significantly. They can be easily awakened and require a large amount of energy storage to sustain their metabolism during this period. Grizzly and polar bears exhibit this behavior in response to environmental cues indicating the change of seasons.

Small mammals, such as squirrels, cannot adopt the same strategy because they need to eat at least once a week, even during hibernation. This difference likely exists due to their smaller size and resultant higher metabolism, requiring them to store food to survive the winter months. While bears also store energy, they do so in the form of fat accumulated during the bountiful summer months, which sustains them through their winter sleep without needing to eat.

Answer: B. He is taught by white boys on the street in exchange for bread.

Frederick Douglass was an American abolitionist. Born into slavery in Maryland, he escaped, and became a leader of the abolitionist movement. He was famous for his oratory and writing skills.

In the autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, he explains how he learned how to read and write. In Chapter 7, Douglass writes that at first, his master's wife decided to teach him the alphabet. However, she was persuaded of the incompatibility of slavery and education, and decided to stop. Douglass then decided to ask the white boys he met in his errands for instruction, in exchange for bread. In this way, and by observing the writing of the men he worked with, Douglass learned how to read and write. He goes on to say that being able to do so allowed him to gain more knowledge about the world, which then convinced him of the injustices of slavery and allowed him to hope for freedom.

what is the message of the poem "the white doe" translated by anna maria armi?

Answers

The poem is a 14-line lyric, beautifully constructed to bring out some meaning in life. The label“The White Doe”, symbolizes chastity and innocence. The whole poem includes personification of a doe that portrays the woman in the author’s life.

The author states that everyone should come out of their consistent life and one may find magnificent things to explore. The message of the author here for everyone is to look out of their window and experience life because, possibly, a beautiful doe(woman)is waiting for the reader right now. Yet again, in the end, the poet declares that one should not fall for a particular moment drastically while ignoring the duties in life.

Overall the basic message that the author tries to convey here is to be adventurous in life, at the same time, being realistic and understanding the priorities in one’s life.

Final answer:

The passage from "The White Doe" depicts a theme of ephemeral beauty and the transient nature of perfection, which is also reflected in other poetic texts with their focus on the complexities of life, beauty, and death.

Explanation:

The poem "The White Doe", as translated by Anna Maria Armi, presents themes of beauty, mortality, and the transient nature of perfection. The passage's mention of the white doe conjures an image of purity and rare beauty, which is admired by the elements of nature and wakens a range of emotions. Similarly, the text references from other poems seem to explore complex relationships between beauty, death, and the mortal experience, suggesting a common theme revolving around the ephemeral quality of life and the pursuit of understanding profound truths.

For instance, the powerful tableau of a white spider killing a white moth on a white flower disrupts the natural order and challenges the reader's expectations. The speaker's questions highlight the uncertainty and randomness of life and death. This intertwining of natural imagery and existential inquiry is indicative of literature that contemplates the deeper meanings behind existence and our desire to find patterns or reasons in the randomness of life's events.

Read the excerpt from chapter 8 of The Travels of Marco Polo. And let me tell you something else. They have sheep here that have no ears, nor even ear-holes; but in the place where ears ought to be they have little horns. They are small creatures and very pretty. And here is something else that may strike you as marvelous: their domestic animals—sheep, oxen, camels, and little ponies—are fed on fish. They are reduced to this diet because in all this country and in all the surrounding regions there is no grass; but it is the driest place in the world.

Which detail from the passage best shows a subjective perspective?
"They have sheep here that have no ears."
"They are . . . very pretty."
"Their domestic animals . . . are fed on fish."
"In all this country . . . there is no grass."

Answers

The correct answer is option two.

Subjective means that something is positioned or determined by personal feelings, preferences or opinion. As a consequence, the expression that refers to small creatures as "pretty" is subjective because it is based on the narrator or author's personal judgement. Prettiness cannot be observed by an objective perspective because it always depends on the individual perception of the viewer.

The rest of the statements are indeed objective since they are based on hard facts and real evidence.

excerpt from "The Garden of Proserpine"
by Algernon Charles Swinburne

Prosperine is the Latin spelling of “Persophone,” a goddess married to Hades, the god of the underworld. According to legend, her garden of poppies would cause travelers to forget their purpose and fall into a waking sleep.

Here, where the world is quiet;

Here, where all trouble seems

Dead winds' and spent waves' riot

In doubtful dreams of dreams;

I watch the green field growing

For reaping folk and sowing,

For harvest-time and mowing,

A sleepy world of streams.

I am tired of tears and laughter,

And men that laugh and weep;

Of what may come hereafter

For men that sow to reap:

I am weary of days and hours,

Blown buds of barren flowers,

Desires and dreams and powers

And everything but sleep.

Here life has death for neighbour,

And far from eye or ear

Wan waves and wet winds labour,

Weak ships and spirits steer;

They drive adrift, and whither

They wot not who make thither;

But no such winds blow hither,

And no such things grow here.

Part A

How does the imagery in the poem’s first stanza affect its meaning?

The first stanza paints a picture of the quiet and peaceful world that existed before mankind created technology and ruined it all.

The images of “dead winds” and “spent waves,” combined with those of “the green field growing” and people “reaping” at “harvest-time,” help convey that the poem is about death and life.

The imagery describes how the natural world will continue to grow and flourish, no matter what happens to mankind.

Many negative words—“dead,” “spent,” “riot,” “doubtful”—establish that the poem is talking about the sadness each person experiences in life. The poem is saying that all life is full of sadness and any potential happiness is only a dream.

Part B

How is the meaning described in Part A further expressed in the poem’s second stanza?

The “blown buds of barren flowers” that the speaker references in this stanza symbolize how death touches all living things.

The speaker says he is tired of people and their bad decisions, which always ruin the happy things in life.

The speaker longs to be out in the natural world where restful sleep is possible and a new day is always dawning.

The speaker is critical of man’s “desires and dreams and powers” and suggests that man is powerless compared to nature.

Answers

The answer for part A is: The images of “dead winds” and “spent waves,” combined with those of “the green field growing” and people “reaping” at “harvest-time,” help convey that the poem is about death and life.

Swinburn wrote this poem during the time in which the Church of England tried to fight secularism by having people ask themselves if there was life after death. The guarantee of eternal life would only be given to those who believed in God and obeyed the Church’s morals. The theme of life and death was, thus, a popular and controversial one at the time.

The Garden of Proserpine focuses on the goddess, Persephone, as a deity of death and the underworld where she inhabits as a land of dreams. Those dreams, however, don’t cause tears or smiles. Such lack of feelings, though, is far from being sad. It is only peaceful.

That takes us to part B: The speaker says he is tired of people and their bad decisions, which always ruin the happy things in life.

People are never able to find real peace. They are always seeking for happiness and even sadness – anything that might make them feel alive and important. The speaker is weary of such fruitless pursuit and seems to appreciate the illusion Persephone’s flowers cause. Sleeping (dying) is peaceful, restoring, while being awake (living) is tiring and purposeless.

Final answer:

The poem uses imagery to portray a world of peace and quiet, yet stagnant, depicting an ongoing cycle of death and rebirth. This theme further extends to the second stanza where the speaker's weariness and longing for an escape from life's mundane realities is expressed. The desire for a serene, unaltered, pastoral world, possibly symbolic of death or peaceful sleep, is strong.

Explanation:

The first stanza's imagery illustrates a world that is both peaceful and quiet, but also holds a sense of stillness and stagnation. The images of 'dead winds' and 'spent waves', along with the mention of a 'green field growing', suggest an ongoing cycle of death and regeneration. In the second stanza, this theme is reinforced with the speaker expressing the weariness of human emotions and desires, longing for a simple, pastoral, and peaceful sleep. The line referring to the 'blown buds of barren flowers' could be indicative of death's omnipresence, touching all life forms, suggesting a longing for an escape from the mundane realities of life, and for the peaceful oblivion resembling sleep.

Read this claim and counterclaim.

Claim: Students should sell candy to raise money for the class trip.

Counterclaim: Students should sell fruit instead of candy because it is healthier.

Which evidence best addresses the counterclaim?

A. quotations from children who like candy bars
B. research that fruit has the same amount of sugar as candy
C. a book about how to make candy at home
D. facts showing candy is less expensive than fruit

Answers

The correct answer is B. Research that fruit has the same amount of sugar as candy

Explanation:

The purpose of addressing a counterclaim is to provide evidence or reasons to disprove the counterclaim and in this way support the main claim. This implies to address the counterclaim it is necessary to show how selling fruit instead of candy is not healthy, as the counterclaim states fruit is better "because it is healthier".

According to this, the best evidence to do this is "Research that fruit has the same amount of sugar as candy" because this disproves the counterclaim by showing the amount of sugar in both elements is similar which shows fruit is not healthier than candy and therefore selling candy is the best option.

A story's exterior narrative is the A. actions and events in the story.

The exterior narrative of a story refers to the actions and events that take place in the story, involving the characters and their interactions with each other and the plot. It encompasses the visible and tangible elements of the story that move the plot forward and create the storyline.

The exterior narrative includes the sequence of events, the character's actions, dialogues, conflicts, resolutions, and other observable aspects of the story. C) order of importance
Eliminate
D) compare and contrast

Answers

Final answer:

The most logical structure for a journalism assignment on the senior prom is chronological order, which aligns with the natural flow of events during the prom. Transitional phrases can aid in maintaining a clear timeline, ensuring an organized and engaging narrative.

Explanation:

The most logical organizational structure for a school newspaper journalism assignment about the senior prom would be chronological order. This approach is effective for recounting events as they occurred, which is particularly fitting for a prom event that has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Starting with the preparation phase, moving on to the arrival of guests, and proceeding through the various activities of the prom night—including the crowning of the prom king and queen—allows the reader to experience the event as it unfolded. Other details such as music, decorations, and attire can be woven into this timeline to create an engaging and comprehensive narrative of the event.

Furthermore, transitional words or phrases could be used to smooth the flow of the article and help the reader follow the sequence of events. By maintaining a clear timeline of events, the story builds effectively and ensures that the information is conveyed in an organized and intriguing manner.

in the poem "As a weary pilgrim, Now at rest" what does the phrase "wasted limbs" "rugged stones' "hungry wolfe" and "burnin sun" signify? How do these phrase fit with the view of death that the poem describes

Answers

This lyric is clear and compact in its motif. It tends to be effectively established that it is around two individuals and states the loss of a friend or family member. As Weary Pilgrim is about the passing of a friend or family member and the longing it pursues. All through the ballad, the storyteller is always expressing things that the pioneer will never do again or will never be understanding. "The consuming sun no more will warm, nor stormy rain on him will beat" is only one case of an ordeal or occasion that will never again transpire. By kicking the bucket he is presently in a place where there is no torment and enduring, however, joy and joy.

Despite the fact that the pilgrim is presently very still, the storyteller aches to be with him. From this, we can expect that the storyteller is a spouse or darling who is experiencing the misfortune. "Master make me prepared for that day, at that point come, dear Bridegroom, return" is demonstrating that she is prepared to be brought together with him. She has experienced her life and is prepared to hit the bucket. "I truly long to be very still and take off on high among the best"

She additionally considers herself a pilgrim who landed close to the finish of her voyage. She is a corrupt animal and her body is exhausted by her age. She wants to take off among the favored in paradise and to rest perpetually from the common inconveniences. She feels prepared for the day of biting the dust and entering paradise and asks the groom (i.e. Jesus, the spirit is hitched to him) to come home.

Several phrases are present in the poem which constructs the momentum of action, in relation to the world. These phrases show the worldliness which the author rebukes after the death of the dear part of her life. Moreover, the questioned phrases are elaborated below for a clear understanding:

Wasted limbs: Tired legs, here, the tired spirit to fight death; Burning sun: The sun nurtures everyone, however here, the author’s beloved is dead, which ironically is a juxtaposition of the Sun’s quality of building the life; Hungry wolves: It is the metaphor used to describe the person who thought poorly of the pilgrim. Rugged stones: This states that the pilgrim was a hard-working human and now that, he is taken away, the irritating stones or rough path of life can lay no more harm to one being talked about in the poem.

As we study these phrases, it can be noticed that the nouns are prefixed with their attributive adjectives. The major number of phrases here is hyperbolic, just to exaggerate the emotional elevation of the author's mind and to picture the cruelty of the living world.

It is said that this poem was written for about 20 years. Most of these poems are included Canzoniere or Rime. Laura in this poem is suspected to be Laura de Noves. Laura de Noves is a woman and a mother from Avignon, France. But because Petrarch gave no clue who Laura really was, some readers suggested another Laura's name. Some critics believe that Laura is not a fictional character, not inspired by one particular person.

Based on the poem, Petrarch was supposed to meet Laura for the first time on 6 April 1327 at a Church of Sts. Claire, Avignon. In his poetry, he seems to have made Laura a lifelong obsession, even until his death on April 6, 1348.
