Name This Painting And Its Artist. Explain What You See And Feel When You Look At This Painting. What

Answers

Answer 1

American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood painted in 1930, it is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.  When I see this portrait I see two very serious, stern people, although it was painted in 1930, it makes me think of a distant past, mainly because of the clothes the woman is wearing and the house in the back with a "carpenter gothic" window.  It is not completely gloomy but the palette is mostly subdued, black and earthy tones.  The man looks old, thin but strong for his age, looking straight forward holding his tool with a firm expression.  The woman is not looking straight forward but she has a serious, sturdy expression.  I feel the painting depicts certain strength in rural american characters, not necessarily a parody but mainly wants to show how the past prevails.  It is a realistic portrait of two characters depicted in rural life, it was painted with oil on beaver board.   The rigidity of the two figures and highly detailed and polished image was inspired by Flemish Renaissance art.

Explanation:

The design of the Taj Mahal and its surrounding gardens use both reflectional and rotational symmetry. The reflectional symmetry is seen in the layout of the buildings and gardens - everything from one side of the central axis is mirrored on the other side. This includes the Taj Mahal itself, the reflecting pool, the side structures, and the gardens. The type of text setting that uses a small number of notes per syllable is called

Answers

it's called a ;syllabic

Syllabic singing refers to the text setting that uses a small number of notes per syllable, contrasting with melismatic singing, where multiple notes are sung on one syllable. Syllabic is particularly efficient in conveying the text's meaning clearly, often used in recitatives opera.

The type of text setting that uses a small number of notes per syllable is referred to as syllabic singing. This is distinct from melismatic singing, where melisma occurs as more than one note is assigned to a single syllable. An example of syllabic singing can be found in certain genres of music, such as recitatives in opera, where the style closely follows the rhythm and accents of speech, typically employing one note per syllable to enhance the clarity and delivery of the text.

Such a method promotes understanding and heightens the impact of the words by allowing the listener to clearly follow the lyrical narrative.

Syllabic singing is common in modern songs where artists aim to convey a message clearly and directly to the audience. While melismatic singing presents a more complex vocal arrangement, syllabic singing focuses on the direct relationship between the melody and the text. This is especially significant in educational settings or where storytelling is the focal point, as it ensures that the text's meaning is not lost in the melodic structure.

True or false: fresco is a monochrome painting done mainly in neutral grays to simulate sculpture.

Answers

False- Fresco is actually a technique of mural paintings that were executed when it is freshly laid

Final answer:

The statement in the question is false. A fresco, specially referred to as 'buon fresco,' is a painting done on wet plaster with various pigments, not just in neutral grays. It is a durable form of painting known for its use in monumental art during the Renaissance.

Explanation:

False: The statement that a fresco is a monochrome painting done mainly in neutral grays to simulate sculpture is not correct. A buon fresco refers to the process of applying pigments mixed with water to a layer of wet lime plaster. The color then becomes an integral part of the plaster as it dries. Whereas a fresco done in monochrome is called grisaille and is used to imitate sculpture, it is not the defining characteristic of a fresco. Rather, fresco paintings are noted for their durability since they're embedded into the wall surface.

You may also encounter fresco secco, which is the technique of painting on dry plaster, but this is not as durable as buon fresco. Fresco painting is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process that has been used for thousands of years, famously throughout the Renaissance period to create narrative cycles and biblical stories in large architectural surfaces, like the Sistine Chapel ceiling by Michelangelo.

Which style of music uses call-and-response patterns in its lyrics and harmonies?

Answers

The style of music that uses call-and-response patterns in its lyrics and harmonies is Blues

Final answer:

Call-and-response is a musical style deeply rooted in African traditions and has influenced various Western music genres like jazz, hip hop, and spiritual songs, characterized by a leader 'calling' and a group 'responding'. It contributes to the improvisational nature of music and dance and can be found in work songs, religious hymns, and other forms of artistic expression.

Explanation:

The style of music that uses call-and-response patterns in its lyrics and harmonies is deeply rooted in sub-Saharan African music traditions and has found its way into various Western music genres. This technique, which involves a leader making a musical statement or 'call' and the group replying or 'responding,' is integral to styles such as jazz, hip hop, and traditional African American spiritual songs. The response in call-and-response can either echo the call or be a variation of it. This form was traditionally used in situations where literacy was uncommon, aiding in community and religious singing. Moreover, this interactive musical structure has been essential to the improvisational nature of certain dances and performance arts, including gumboot dancing and Steppin', and has also influenced secular music forms, including work songs and modern dance music.

Call-and-response is also present in African American spiritual songs, which exhibit a range of styles from shouts to anthems and jubilees. These spirituals often contain polyrhythms and syncopations, featuring call-and-response forms and 'blue' notes, which signify a certain bending of musical tones derived from West African influences. From these spiritual roots, American music genres such as jazz, blues, and gospel have evolved, demonstrating the diffusion and far-reaching influence of call-and-response beyond its original context.

As seen with artists like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, the call-and-response pattern can also intersect with poetry in music, indicating how lyrical expression can meld with this traditional musical device to engage audiences. Through the ages, from early American folk music to contemporary rock and pop, call-and-response has remained a dynamic and unifying element in music.
