I. Getting the Phone Call:

When I finally got the phone call from the producers of the reality TV show "The Coolest Kid in School" telling me I had been accepted as a part of the show's final cast, you’d think that my mom would’ve been happy about it—even proud. I’d shown more initiative in applying for the show than I’d ever shown in trying to improve my grade point average: I’d made an awesome audition tape, filled out a huge 15 page application (including four essays!), and done five different stressful interviews before a panel of producers in order to make the final cut. The phone call informing me that I was on the show was a dream come true for me. But for my mom? No way. She immediately changed her tune from supporting my dream of starring on a reality TV show to doing nothing but questioning it. It’s not so much that she’s opposed to this reality show (focusing on pitting teenagers against one another in a televised popularity contest), it’s all reality shows that she thinks are, in her words, “hate-filled, degrading, and wicked.” She could not be more wrong, though.

II. My Mom is Over-reacting:

Let’s just face it. People who hate reality shows are really just old, humorless sourpusses. These are people whose last favorite TV show was something produced 40 years ago in black-and-white. They want tv shows to look like what they want reality to look like and not look like what it actually is. In old TV shows, the good guys always win and morality prevails. But reality is not like that—and thus reality shows aren’t either.

III. Defending the Reality Show Genre

Reality shows, as the name implies, reflect “reality” without any preconceptions or judgments. What happens on a reality show is what really happens in life. We all know, for example, that in real life it’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know. Reality shows demonstrate this truism in episode after episode. Reality shows put a microcosm of American life on display for all to see. They allow everyday people the chance to be on television and become famous!

My mom claims that reality shows have made young people more rude and aggressive, but without reality shows, young people would be even more aggressive and rude because they wouldn’t have a legitimate outlet for their anti-social impulses. My mom refuses to recognize that reality shows dominate the airwaves because they are so popular. If they’re so corrosive and decadent, how could millions of people tune in every week to watch these shows? Can millions of people be wrong? What I truly can’t understand is why my mom isn’t excited about the money I could bring home from "The Coolest Kid in School"—almost $100,000 that could go straight to my college fund! If for no other reason, my mom should be excited about me getting on a reality show because I’m now going to be on a reality show.

People clearly enjoy watching reality shows judging from their ratings, but even more than that, people enjoy being ON reality shows. I want my chance to know that enjoyment firsthand. I know it will kill my mom to watch me willingly walk into a group of people, some of whom were chosen precisely because they are likely to cause drama and argue with me, but you know what? It’s no different than me leaving home and walking into the real world where those same kinds of people exist too. So, Mom, I know you don’t understand my happiness at entering what you call “a world of pain,” but it’s my choice. You’ve supported me this far. I hope you’ll continue to support me once you see me on the TV screen.

Which statement best summarizes the speaker's point of view in this essay?

A) Reality shows are good because they show good prevailing over evil.

B) Reality shows are good because nobody really takes them seriously.

C) Reality shows are good because they are almost all well-crafted and well-produced.

Eliminate

D) Reality shows are good because they acknowledge reality as it is, for better or worse.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

D

Explanation:

Reality shows are good because they show reality as it is. The passage states "Reality shows, as the name implies, reflect "reality" without any preconceptions or judgments." It also states "In old TV shows, the good guys always win...But reality is not like that-and thus reality shows aren't either." These both show that reality shows reflect real life.

Which three words describe the appropriate tone for a blog meant to convince teens, parents, and town officials to end a curfew requiring all people under eighteen to be home by 9:00 p.m.?

Answers

Informative, compelling, and convincing are three words to describe the appropriate tone for a blog meant to convince teens, parents, and town officials to end a curfew requiring all people under eighteen to be home by 9:00 p.m.

What is tone?

A literary technique known as the tone is used to express an author's thoughts or views about just the subject area they are speaking about. To establish the mood, authors can choose their words wisely. This fosters a link with the reader and aids in the reader's comprehension of the author's goal.

A particular blog where there are teens' parents as well as officials present for this defines the curfew timing at which time the children should enter the rooms or should be back to their house.

Therefore the tone in this passage is informative compelling as well as commencing that the teens would be safer and sound when they have reached the home by 9:00 PM.

Final answer:

The tone for a blog aimed at convincing stakeholders to end a teenage curfew should be persuasive to present strong arguments, empathetic to connect with the audience, and reasonable to respect differing views.

Explanation:

The appropriate tone for a blog intended to persuade teens, parents, and town officials to revoke a 9:00 p.m. curfew for those under eighteen should be persuasive, empathetic, and reasonable. A persuasive tone is essential to convince readers of the argument's validity, using facts, logic, and appeals to emotion. Empathy helps the blogger connect with the audience's feelings and experiences, making the message more impactful, especially when discussing the effects of the curfew on teens’ freedom and parents' trust.

A reasonable tone, grounded in logic and balanced by understanding differing viewpoints without aggression, ensures the blog is respectful and considers the concerns of town officials about safety and community well-being.

Mulvey relates this feature of cinematography (specifically, depth of field) to the expression of the active male's expansive power through screen space (hint: must be related to depth of field).

Answers

Answer:

Mulvey relates this feature of cinematography (specifically, depth of field) to the expression of the active male's expansive power through screen space. Mulvey relates to Depth of field.

Explanation:

The Depth of field is very important in photography, it enhances our photos. It is that part that represents sharpness that we can easily focus. It varies from one photo to another.

In some photos, the part where we can focus on is very shallow but in other photos, this part is very deep. Depth of field depends upon aperture and focal length of the lens.

Large aperture gives a shallow depth of field but on the other hand, a small aperture gives a deep depth of field.

Final answer:

Laura Mulvey's critique of film, particularly her concept of the male gaze, is reflected in the use of depth of field in cinematography to convey and reinforce the active male character's power in film narrative space. By manipulating which characters are in focus, filmmakers can subtly enforce power dynamics and the objectification of women.

Explanation:

Laura Mulvey's seminal work 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema' discusses the concept of the male gaze, a form of looking that objectifies women, making them subjects of masculine desire within the films. Within the context of cinematography, and specifically through the technique of depth of field, Mulvey argues that the use of screen space can express the active male's expansive power. The depth of field in cinematography refers to the range of distance within a shot that appears acceptably sharp; through this technique, directors and cinematographers can direct the audience's attention, controlling their gaze and therefore shaping their perception of the film's narrative and characters.

Depth of field is a cinematographic tool that can convey metaphorical depth, and is often used to foreground certain characters, making them appear dominant and in control of the space around them. By manipulating depth of field, a filmmaker might emphasize the power dynamics present within the scene, aligning the audience with the active male character's perspective. This can indirectly contribute to the perpetuation of the male gaze, positioning women and other characters in the background or out of focus, further reinforcing their status as passive or subsidiary.

Consider the word metamorphosis and evaluate it in terms of Gregor, his parents, and his sister as characters who develop differently in the story. Use the following table to discuss how the incident of Gregor changing into an insect affected and changed each character.

Answers

Answer:

Gregor

Even though Gregor is the only character to undergo a physical transformation, he experiences perhaps the least emotional growth of all the characters. That’s not to say he doesn’t evolve, though. He changes somewhat when he starts putting his own wants and desires over those of his family. He basks in the joy of freedom and escape from responsibility, and he spends hours hanging from the ceiling enjoying himself. He even learns to stand up for himself. At one point, he attempts to defend his belongings when Grete tries to get rid of them. He also tries to obtain human pleasure by listening to his sister play the violin. However, his story has a sad ending. He seems to return to his self-sacrificing ways by dying so that he will no longer be a burden to his family, leaving them free to prosper.

Mr. Samsa

Gregor’s metamorphosis brings about a metamorphosis in his parents, especially his father. Prior to Gregor’s change, his father was a decrepit old man who never got dressed and who could hardly walk. However, after Gregor’s transformation, his father is overcome with newfound confidence. He gets a job as a bank messenger and never takes off his new blue uniform. Gregor’s death strengthens his father further, empowering him to stand up to the lodgers and the charwoman.

Mrs. Samsa

Mrs. Samsa is sympathetic to Gregor during his crisis, although she seems unable to relate to him or even tolerate his presence. She displays both nervous and sentimental behavior while Gregor is alive. For example, she faints upon seeing him but tries to prevent her husband from killing him. His death seems to loosen her up, and she accompanies her husband and daughter on their family vacation. She even manages to get a job for herself as a seamstress in an underwear company.

Grete

Grete undergoes significant change over the course of the story. She starts off taking care of and protecting Gregor when he’s transformed into an insect. Later, she grows tired of him and begins to resent him. She starts neglecting him and encourages the family to get rid of him. Gregor’s transformation and death has a liberating effect on her. All her life, she had been dependent on him for everything. However, after he changes, she becomes more independent and starts taking on more responsibility. She gets a job as a salesgirl and starts learning shorthand and French to improve her future prospects. The story ends on a promising note for Grete, who can now look forward to getting married and starting a new life.

Explanation:

Final answer:

The word 'metamorphosis' symbolizes the transformation of characters in the story. Gregor's sudden transformation into an insect forced his family members to adapt and change in response to the new circumstance, each undergoing their own form of metamorphosis.

Explanation:

The word metamorphosis in relation to the story's characters, Gregor, his parents, and his sister, signifies their transformation, similar to the concept of an insect's metamorphosis. Gregor’s transformation into an insect is the most literal metamorphosis in the story, but his sister and parents undergo significant transformations as well.

Before Gregor's transformation, he was the breadwinner of the family. However, he turns into a burden after transforming into an insect. This event forces his family to go through individual metamorphoses to cope with the new reality. His parents, initially dependent on him, have to muster resilience and work to make up for Gregor’s lost income.

Despite the repulsion and fear, his sister, Grete, initially exhibits kindness and empathy, becoming Gregor's primary caregiver. Therefore, she undergoes a metamorphosis from a dependent child to a responsible young woman, signifying a process of maturation. However, her attitude changes over time, she grows tired of caring for Gregor and she eventually becomes the one who suggests the family should get rid of him. Metamorphosis, therefore, is a central theme that undergirds the narrative in showcasing the impact of a dramatic event on characters and how they adapt and change in response.

Answer: magic

Explanation:

0000

"The correct answer is:

Two activities that Pitcairn teenagers might find humdrum could be attending school and participating in community service.

Pitcairn Island is a small and remote island in the South Pacific with a very small population. The lifestyle on Pitcairn is quite different from that in large cities or even in more populated rural areas. Due to its isolation and limited resources, the range of activities available to teenagers is quite limited compared to what might be found in more populous places.

Attending school on Pitcairn Island could be considered humdrum by teenagers because the school is very small, with a limited number of students and teachers. This could lead to a less stimulating educational environment and fewer opportunities for social interaction and extracurricular activities compared to larger schools.

Participating in community service might also be seen as humdrum due to the nature of a small, close-knit community where everyone knows each other and community service might be more of an expectation or routine rather than a choice. The types of community service available might also be limited and repetitive, contributing to a sense of monotony.

Other activities that could be considered humdrum might include daily chores, limited recreational options, and the lack of diversity in entertainment and social events due to the small population and the island's remote location. However, the question specifically asks for two activities, and based on the context provided, attending school and participating in community service are reasonable choices for activities that might be considered humdrum by Pitcairn teenagers."

The woman as an image of perfection curated to an adoring, masochistic male gaze.

What is this described as

Answers

She is described as a well know respected woman

The concept you're describing is known as the 'male gaze', originated by Laura Mulvey, which explains how women are presented as objects for the visual and erotic pleasure of men in visual media, reinforcing traditional gender roles and power dynamics.

The description given refers to the concept known as the male gaze, which is a term used in feminist theory to describe the depiction of women as sexualized objects in cinema and other visual media, designed for the pleasure of a heteronormative male viewer.

British film theorist Laura Mulvey introduced this concept in 1975, analyzing how women are positioned in visual culture as objects to be looked at, often reinforcing traditional gender roles and power imbalances. This perspective suggests that the male gaze creates a division of pleasure in looking, where men assume the role of the active viewer, while women are presented as passive subjects of the gaze, displayed for visual and erotic impact.

Throughout history, women have been represented in various forms, from mystical and dangerous figures like witches or sirens to idealized and romanticized figures such as the Vir'gin Mary or Helen of Troy. These representations are often tied to the ideas of femininity as articulated by male-dominated societies and reflect an imbalance of power between genders.
