1 Hi. How is everyone doing tonight? I just wanted to take a few minutes to share with you my take on the Soda Ban issue that everyone has been talking about.

2 I teach seventh grade math here at the school and I think the proposed school ban on soda pop is a bit over the top. Why? Well, healthy eating habits begin at home and here at school we, as teachers, can help by encouraging healthy choices. Soda may not be the healthiest choice, but a can of soda every now and again is okay.

3 We all want our children to be healthy and develop healthy eating habits. I know many of you are concerned about tooth decay and other health issues, but it's not like students are drinking soda all day long. Most students drink milk during lunch and water from the water fountain throughout the day. The vending machine room is not open in the morning, only at lunch and after school.

4 At our school, all of the money from the soda machines pays for sports programs and the band program. If this ban goes into effect, where will the money come from to pay for these worthy programs? Before supporting this ban, I ask you to think about that.

5 We have the best sports teams in the state. Go Hawks! We won the state football championship last year, and our tennis team did very well in the finals of the state tournament in Myrtle Beach. The tennis team has 6 players and they worked very hard in practice to be the best they can be. We have never gone all the way to the finals before, and we are very proud of our tennis team for doing so well.

6 I know I have been rambling on, so let me just say “every thing in moderation." Let's keep the soda machines, and let's keep the money that the machines generate going to our sports teams.

Now in the third year of his (FDR) administration, we find more of our people unemployed than at any other time. We find our houses empty and our people hungry, many of them half-clothed and many of them not clothed at all….

We find not only the people going further into debt, but that the United States is going further into debt. The states are going further into debt, and the cities and towns are even going into bankruptcy. The condition has become deplorable. Instead of his promises, the only remedy that Mr. Roosevelt has prescribed is to borrow more money if he can and to go further into debt. The last move was to borrow $5 billion more on which we must pay interest for the balance of our lifetimes, and probably during the lifetime of our children…

That is why the Share Our Wealth societies are forming in every nook and corner of America….They have a great work to perform. Here is what we stand for in a nutshell:

Number one, we propose that every family in America should at least own a homestead equal in value to not less than one third the average family wealth…. So our first proposition means that every family will have a home and the comforts of a home up to a value of not less than around $5,000 or a little more than that.

Number two, we propose that no family shall own more than three hundred times the average family wealth, which means that no family shall possess more than a wealth of approximately $5 million….

Number three, we propose that every family shall have an income equal to at least one third of the average family income in America…. When a wave of Mexican settlers began to come to San Diego in the 1890s, many of them made their home in an area known as Logan Heights. Soon that area was called Barrio Logan. (In Spanish, a barrio is a neighborhood.) At first, Barrio Logan was a neighborhood of homes and shops that stretched from well inland all the way to San Diego Bay, and the people had access to the beach. Then, during World War II, the beach was closed. In the 1950s, the city changed the zoning of the area so that industry could move into the neighborhood. Soon, the barrio was spotted with noisy, dirty junkyards. In the 1960s, Interstate 5 and ramps for the San Diego-Coronado Bridge cut Barrio Logan in half. About 5,000 homes were destroyed in the process.
By this time, the residents were very angry about the terrible damage to their barrio. They protested loudly. Finally, the City Council of San Diego promised them a park to help make up for the damage. The council set aside land for that purpose. And then, in 1970, bulldozers arrived to turn the land into a parking lot. A student, Mario Solis, saw them, asked what was going on, and started spreading the word. Within a few hours, there were 250 people in the park, blocking the bulldozers.
