The Emancipation Proclamation: a)was widely opposed in the North. b)did not provide any military advantages for the Union. c)emancipated only the slaves of the border states. d)freed the slaves of all states in rebellion.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

d)freed the slaves of all states in rebellion.

Explanation:

The order issued by US president Abraham Lincoln after the civil war  to free slaves in ten states was known as emancipation proclamation. It was applied to the slaves in the rebel states.  Although it did not immediately freed all slaves as those states were controlled by the confederacy, however it did free more than 19000 slaves  immediately and 4 million slaves were freed with the advance of union army in the confederate states. The proclamation passively declared emancipation a goal of civil war and weakened the efforts to recognise the confederacy.

Why did the espionage act receive substantial criticism?

Answers

Answer:

Espionage act receive substantial criticism because is a deliberate theft of information without moral restrictions, either in the industry or the nation.

Explanation:

Espionage is a strategy to know confidential information, either from other nation or a competition industry, so it could be stopped or sabotaged. Normally, there is a person or a team that work to get data, using one of the two main techniques: infiltration or penetration. Nations (even in times of peace) aiming national security and to know the status of every country they have relation with, work to get information to anticipate any threat and to incite some convenience if any the case. On the other hand, industries in the fight of industrial development, profit and/or efficiency search information to get advantage on the market. Both sometimes use espionage to achieve their aims of information.

But, espionage is not well seen mainly for the following reasons:

Espionage is stealing. All men and women are be free to have and domain all goods (information, properties, etc.) that they acquire in justice. Now, if somebody tries to take that away without the conscious approval of the owner, it would be unfair and therefore inmoral. Also, because with stealing you affect directly the owner. So, in the espionage act there is an attempt to posses something that they don't own and affect the owner, so therefore to make an inmoral act.In espionage there is deliberation to steal, in other words, there is an explicit intention to make something bad, in this case: stealing data. This makes a worst act, because in morals theory consciousness is the basis of the severity of acts, so when you have the purpose of doing something wrong or to affect other it is even more bad than doing it accidentally. So, in the espionage act we find a severer case of stealing because it is an intended search to affect other by stealing. In Espionage there is a deliberate intention to steal no matter what, which means that there is no moral restriction that could make the act stop, and therefore acts like manipulation, bribe or blackmail are normal in these situations, which are also inmoral, leading to a circle of inmoral acts until the goal (stealing information) is reached.

Therefore, espionage act receive substantial criticism because is an act of deliberate theft of information without moral restrictions, either in the industry or the nation.

Final answer:

The Espionage Act received substantial criticism for limiting civil liberties, most notably freedom of speech. It resulted in numerous prosecutions, sparked fears of a widespread surveillance state, and was upheld by the Supreme Court despite widespread public outcry.

Explanation:

The Espionage Act garner significant condemnation due to reasons revolving around the denial of certain civil liberties. This legislation, enacted in 1917, was essentially designed to suppress criticism of the nation's involvement in World War I. The act broadly cast the net, defining offenses as any acts that could be construed as giving aid to enemy forces, whilst discouraging men from enlisting in the military or obstructing enlistment efforts. This resulted in the curtailment of freedom of speech, which was protected under the First Amendment. Numerous individuals were subsequently arrested for expressing their disapproval of the war. The treatment towards prominent members of society, such as the socialist leader Eugene Debs, receiving a ten-year prison sentence for encouraging draft resistance, was particularly denounced.

Moreover, the broad enactment and application of the Espionage Act significantly encroached into the private lives of citizens. For instance, the local 'councils of defense' and the American Protective League were formed to report any antiwar comments to the authorities. This resulted in a widespread surveillance state which significantly affected the personal lives of citizens and the functioning of society as a whole.

Despite these draconian measures, the Supreme Court upheld the Act under the scope of its interpretation of the 'clear and present danger' threshold. This only served to increase public outcry and protests against the Espionage Act. However, much of this would not succeed in its aim until Congress repealed most of the Espionage Act and the Sedition Act in 1921.

c. Thomas Malthus suggested that all species were not created at the same time.
d. Charles Lyell argued that geological forces had gradually shaped the earth and continued to do so.
e. Georges Cuvier documented discoveries of fossils and showed that extinction had occurred.

Answers

Answer:

The correct answer is: c) Thomas Malthus suggested that all species were not created at the same time.

Explanation:

Thomas Robert Malthus was known mainly for his contribution to political economy and demography, through the "Malthusian Doctrine". His most important idea referred to the fact that population grows at a geometrical rate, whereas natural resources (food supply) grows at an arithmetic rate. This fact would ultimately lead to famines and a natural population decrease.

Although his thoughts and doctrine influenced the Darwinian evolution theory, Malthus didn't write about the creation of species, as opposed to Leclerc, Lamarck, Lyell and Cuvier, who studied biological processes more than political, economic or demographic ones.

What did martin luther king jr. Mean when he said that judicial decrees may not change the heart

Answers

Answer:

"Justice decree may not change the heart, but they can restrain the heartless" these words by Martin Luther King Jr. reflects the conditions prevalent at the time in the United States. These words were used to signify the relevance of the Judicial decision in the fight for civil rights. He accepted that these decrees would not install morality. But the scope of regulating the behavior would be widened. He stressed the role of legislative orders and judicial decrees to support African Americans against the prejudice and violence, they were facing.

Final answer:

Martin Luther King Jr. emphasized the difference between obeying laws and having a true moral conviction towards racial equality.

Explanation:

When Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about judicial decrees and the heart, he was highlighting the distinction between legal compliance and moral conviction. He noticed that while legal decrees such as those mandating desegregation could enforce changes in behavior, they did not necessarily change people's beliefs or hearts towards racial equality.

King longed for a moral awakening where white religious leaders and their congregations would not just follow the law because it was legally required, but would support racial integration because it was morally right and because they recognized African Americans as their brothers and sisters in humanity. Moral support, in his view, was as critical as legal mandates in achieving true racial justice and equality.

What is poverty rate ?

It is also available by age group, including child poverty (0-17 years old), working-age poverty, and elderly poverty (66 year-olds or more). However, the relative income level of the poor in two countries with the same poverty rate may differ.

The poverty threshold, poverty limit, poverty line, or breadline[1] is the bare minimum of income considered adequate in a given country.

Typically, the poverty line is calculated by estimating the total cost of a year's worth of necessities for the average adult.

Because housing costs, such as rent for an apartment, account for the majority of this estimate, economists monitor the real estate market and other housing cost indicators as major influences on the poverty line.

a. Civilians and enemy soldiers would be short on supplies.
b. It would motivate the southern citizens to support the North
c. It would show that the Confederate government could not protect its citizens.

Answers

Final answer:

Option (b) 'It would motivate the southern citizens to support the North' would not be true following Sherman's March to the Sea, as the destruction caused by the Union army would likely demoralize Southern citizens, rather than encouraging them to support the North.

Explanation:

The question pertains to General Sherman's March to the Sea during the American Civil War and its effects on the Confederacy. If Sherman's army was able to destroy everything in its path, then option (b) 'It would motivate the southern citizens to support the North' would not be true. The extensive destruction would likely have the opposite effect, demoralizing the Southern population and reducing their will to continue fighting.

Navigating through the war-torn South, Sherman's campaign aimed to dispense with the Confederate resistance and demoralize their will to fight. This strategy involved targeting not just military installations, but also civilian resources, indicating a shift toward total war. The effects included shortages of supplies for both civilians and enemy soldiers, as well as a demonstration that the Confederate government was incapable of defending its citizens. These actions were unlikely to garner support for the Union cause among Southern citizens and would result in further hostility and division.

What was the impact of westward movement on enslaved African Americans

Answers

The impact of westward movement on enslaved African Americans was a really a serious conflict. Around 1775 more than half a million African Americans, most of them became slaves and they were living in the 13 colonies. The morality of slavery was disregarded. By the 1760s, as colonists began to speak out against Westward movement, more Americans pointed out the obvious contradiction between advocating liberty and owning slaves. As the talk of liberty started to spread that gave a plethora of slaves high expectations, and a lot of them wanted to fight for a democratic revolution that might offer them freedom. In 1775 at least 10 to 15 black soldiers, including some slaves, fought against the British at the battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill. The Declaration of Independence promised liberty for all men but failed to put an end to slavery. In spite this, many free and enslaved African American in New England were willing to to fight the British. Black participation in the Revolution, however, was not limited to supporting the American cause, and either voluntarily or under duress thousands also fought for the British. Enslaved blacks made their own assessment of the conflict and supported the side that offered the best opportunity to escape bondage. Most British officials were reluctant to arm blacks, but as early as 1775, Virginia’s royal governor, Lord Dunmore, established an all-black “Ethiopian Regiment” composed of runaway slaves. By promising them freedom, Dunmore enticed over 800 slaves to escape from “rebel” masters. Whenever they could, enslaved blacks continued to join him until he was defeated and forced to leave Virginia in 1776. Dunmore’s innovative strategy met with disfavor in England, but to many blacks the British army came to represent liberation.

How were the slaves life like?
Life for most enslaved men and women was brutal. They were isolated from their family members because most slaveowners had no compunction about splitting up families in order to improve their own financial situation. Most European colonial economies were dependent on enslaved African labour for their survival as it was a national system that touch the core of its economic and political life.

Even though the enslaved people had a harsh life they adopted a variety of mechanisms to cope with the degrading realities of life and they resisted to everyday slavery through everyday acts. This also led them to create their own unique religious culture combing elements of the westward and the African American traditions and spiritual beliefs.

Even though the slavery of African Americans was a disastrous conflict but it has shaped our lives and taught the future generations about the terrible reality, the deceptions and evasions the enslaved people have been through.
