The praying mantis is a member of the Mantid group of insects. Mantids come in many shapes and sizes and are found all over the world. Some have patterns on their bodies that help them look like the ground. Some are bright green to blend in with leaves and plants. One special mantis is bright pink and looks like an orchid. The mantis is such a strange and engaging creature that many people keep them as pets. For many reasons, mantids have fascinated humans for many years. First, mantids show an amazing mastery of hunting skills. Mantids eat a wide variety of insects, including moths, crickets, bees, flies, grasshoppers, other mantids, and even, on occasion, small birds and snakes. They can capture prey many times larger than they are. Their powerful armor and amazing hunting skills make them quite effective. They have large powerful front legs, with spikes that help them hold on to prey. Their head can turn almost entirely around to follow prey without moving. Their front legs are so powerful and so fast that it is hard to see them move when capturing prey. One second their legs are empty and the next they are clutching tightly to something they have caught. Mantids are also stealthy. They wait, very still, very patiently for prey to come into sight. They also make slight swaying movements, to mimic leaves and grass moved by the wind. They focus intently on their victim. Then they pounce, suddenly, rarely missing their target. They are so successful they can triple in size every few months by molting when they outgrow their exoskeletons. They start out as nymphs, able to capture only prey that is smaller than they are. They end their lives about a year later becoming predators that can take down prey as large as hummingbirds. Finally, they are very personable, as far as insects go. They have a large, triangular-shaped head with large eyes. This alien-like appearance makes them quite cute. When you come across them in the garden, you can tell right away they are aware of you. They follow your movements as if to assess if you are either something to eat or something that will eat them. The little ones will accept rides on your finger if you are gentle. But be careful—they can jump surprisingly far even when small. If they think your freckle is prey, you may be surprised to find a mantis on your nose. As far as predatory insects go, the mantis is one of the most impressive. Gardeners love to find them in on vegetables because mantids eat many insects that damage crops. However, they may also eat some insects that help a gardener—like bees. Regardless, the mantis is a fascinating insect, and if you happen to see one hunting in the wild, consider yourself lucky. Read the following line from the text: One second their legs are empty, and the next they are clutching tightly to something they have caught. What is another word for clutching in this context? Which line from "She Walks in Beauty" describes the woman in an unusual way? "Which heaven to gaudy day denies" "And on that cheek, and o'er that brow" "So soft, so calm, yet eloquent" "The smiles that win, the tints that glow"

Answers

The line that describes the woman in an unusual way is:

"Which heaven to gaudy day denies"

The other three choices are usual way of poetically describing the beauty of a woman meanwhile this line is something not typical. The writer is comparing the beauty of the woman to a toned down or less intense brightness. He means that the woman is not as bright as a gaudy day, but perhaps rather mellow like the light of the moon.

Also, the choice "having a sharp point at the end" is not valid. It doesn't make sense to say call it a sharp point congestion. However, the option sudden and severe does make sense. In this assignment, you'll revisit the topic of stage directions and explore additional ways they can develop literary elements in a play. Read the example: I think stage directions were especially important in defining and shaping the audience's understanding of Brutus and Portia's marriage in Act II. When Portia kneels before her husband, we understand that this is a gesture of submission and pleading. She really, really wants to know what is wrong with her husband. However, when the stage directions indicate that Brutus "helps her rise," we understand that Brutus cares about his wife and thinks of her more as an equal. Your answer should include the following: • Explain why playwrights use stage directions. • Explore how stage directions help to develop the plot or the meaning in a play. • Cite one specific example of a stage direction from Julius Caesar, and explains how it develops the plot or meaning of the play

Answers

Playwrights use stage directions to give more insight into how the characters should be interacting with each other. Shakespeare uses actually very few stage directions compared to some modern playwrights who detail every move a character is supposed to make.

Stage directions help develop the plot because they help the actors and audience physically move in the space to move the action forward. For example, in Caesar we get the stage direction "CASCA first, then the other Conspirators and BRUTUS stab CAESAR". We understand through the dialogue that they are going to stab Caesar, but this gives us the person who stabs first and the person who stabs last. This helps give meaning to the characters because we learn a lot about Casca (he is the most willing to start the violence) and Brutus (he is still hesitating and it takes him the longest to actually be able to follow through). Also, it develops the plot in the obvious way that if this action does not occur, the rest of the play could not happen.

Read the excerpt from Act III of Hamlet.

Hamlet: [L]et your own discretion be your tutor: suit the action to the word, the word to the action; with this special observance, that you o’erstep not the modesty of nature; for anything so overdone is from the purpose of playing, whose end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as ’twere, the mirror up to nature; to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure. Now, this overdone, or come tardy off, though it make the unskilful laugh, cannot but make the judicious grieve; the censure of which one must in your allowance o’erweigh a whole theatre of others. O! there be players that I have seen play, and heard others praise, and that highly, not to speak it profanely, that, neither having the accent of Christians nor the gait of Christian, pagan, nor man, have so strutted and bellowed that I have thought some of nature’s journeymen had made men and not made them well, they imitated humanity so abominably.

In the second paragraph, what is the idea the author is trying to convey about the book, using descriptors like "not textbooks," "impressionistic," and "introductions"? That anyone can misinterpret the meaning of the books That anyone can understand and enjoy the books That the books are less expensive and more useful That the books are less frivolous and more academic

Answers

I believe the correct answer is the second statement – that anyone can understand and enjoy the books.

In the second paragraph of “Preface to Buddhism and Buddhists in China”, the idea that author is trying to convey about the book, using descriptors like "not textbooks," "impressionistic," and "introductions" is that everyone can enjoy and understand books as the purpose of each volume in this series is impressionistic rather than definitely educational.

Your question is missing the paragraph of "Preface to Buddhism and Buddhists in China" that will help answer it. I've found it online. The paragraph is as follows:

The purpose of each volume in this series is impressionistic rather than definitely educational. They are not textbooks for the formal study of Buddhism, but introductions to its study. They aim to kindle interest and to direct the activity of the awakened student along sound lines. For further study each volume amply provides through directions and literature in the appendices. It seeks to help the student to discriminate, to think in terms of a devotee of Buddhism when he compares that religion with Christianity. It assumes, however, that Christianity is the broader and deeper revelation of God and the world of today.

Answer:

The idea the author is trying to convey is:

That anyone can understand and enjoy the books.

Explanation:

In the paragraph of "Preface to Buddhism and Buddhists in China", the author is trying to show his audience that the books they are about to read are not a dense type of literary work. The purpose of the books is not academical in the sense that they do not deepen the studies and explanations about Buddhism. They introduce them in a lighter manner, aiming to get readers interested in the subject rather than transforming them into scholars. They are not textbooks, but a less formally instructional reading that will help readers develop their knowledge and curiosity a little further. Therefore, anyone, scholars or non-scholars, would be able to appreciate and understand the books.

Critics cannot agree on the very first American novel.
true , false

Answers

the answer is true hope this helps

Final answer:

Critics indeed cannot agree on the very first American novel, reflecting a complex literary heritage striving for a unique American identity amidst industrialization and cultural transformation during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Explanation:

True, there is debate among literary critics regarding what constitutes the very first American novel. This disagreement stems from a broader historical context where early American writers strove to create a unique American literary voice, distinct from that of European influences. Writers such as Washington Irving and Nathaniel Hawthorne were pioneering in developing an American literary tradition. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, despite the popularity of the novel, there was significant controversy surrounding the consumption and value of fiction, reflecting a larger tension in American culture regarding the establishment of a distinct American identity in literature and language.

The critics' inability to reach a consensus on the first American novel highlights the complexity of America's literary beginnings and the influences that shaped it. The quest for a distinct American cultural identity was further complicated by the presence of industrialization and the emergence of the Industrial Age, which transformed the publishing industry and expanded the definition of leisure, facilitating a broader consumption of printed materials and enabling American writers to reach wider audiences.
