Indentured servitude was a system in which individuals, usually poor English or European men and women, agreed to work for a specified number of years in exchange for necessities like lodging, food, clothing, and transportation. Unlike slavery, indentured servitude was not a lifelong commitment, and servants would receive their freedom and often land or other provisions at the end of their term. This system was used in the English colonies in America to meet the labor demand before the establishment of slavery.
