What is the central idea of this passage?

A)
America no longer needs an Electoral College system.

B)
Voters must take seriously the responsibility to vote.

C)
College graduates agree with the Electoral College system.

D)
American presidents are in support of the Electoral College system.

STORY:
Every four years, millions of people head to the polls on Election Day to vote for a new president. It is their right and duty as U.S. citizens to do so. In the months before the election, they watch the candidates argue about important issues. They read articles about the candidates' promises. They see ads that draw attention to the candidates' strengths and weaknesses. Armed with this knowledge and their own beliefs, citizens choose the candidate whom they believe will lead our country in the right direction. Or do they?

2In the United States, the people do not directly pick the president. Rather, our country gives this important power to the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a body of electors selected by the people in each state to officially choose the next president. How does the Electoral College work? On Election Day, voters take part in the popular vote. They press a button or pull a lever to vote for a presidential candidate. What they actually do, however, is pick the electors who will become members of the Electoral College. These electors pledge to vote for the chosen candidate in another election held in mid-December.

3The number of members each state has in the Electoral College depends on its population. A state with a large population has more votes than a state with a small population. For example, California has 55 votes while Alaska has 3. In most states, the candidate who wins the popular vote wins all of that state’s electoral votes. A candidate must receive a majority of the electoral votes to become the next president. How many electoral votes is enough to win? In recent elections, candidates have had to earn at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes to win.

4In theory, this system should work, and it has worked—most of the time. A few times, however, the system has failed. In these cases, the candidate with fewer popular votes gained enough electoral votes to win the election. This occurred during the 2000 presidential election when more people voted for Al Gore, but George W. Bush earned more electoral votes and became the president. What causes such a breakdown in the system to happen? Let's return to the example of California and Alaska. A single vote in California has the power to override thousands of votes in other states. Imagine that only one person in California casts a vote for Candidate A. That candidate wins the popular vote in California 1–0. He or she gets all of California's 55 electoral votes. Across the country, thousands of voters in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Delaware cast their votes for Candidate B. Not one voter casts a vote for Candidate A. These states have a combined 52 electoral votes, which is not enough to beat California's 55. How can the leaders of our country believe that this system is fair?

5A long time ago, Americans were scattered far and wide about the country. It made sense to have representatives who voted for them. In this day and age, however, polling places are practically in the next room for most people. With the use of computers, it is possible to tally votes quickly and accurately. The need for the "middle man" is gone. U.S. citizens are perfectly capable of choosing the person they want for president without interference. It is time to graduate from the Electoral College and let the people decide. You want your vote to matter, don't you?

Growing up, Khalil used the analogy of a monster controlling his mother to explain away his addiction.  He believed that underneath it all, his mom was still the loving person she used to be before the addiction.

Furthermore, Khalil made sense of his mom’s crack addiction by associating it with emotional longing for her. He felt a deep need for his mother, which led him to seek a similar feeling of happiness through drugs like crack. In "In the Time of Butterflies", the fact that the father was desperate for a son

indicates that female children are not

a) needed for a family to be complete

b) able to run a business

c) customarily seen as the equal of male children

d) none of the above

Answers

Answer:

c

Explaination: They favored men because they thought of them as more capable which is why they were not seen as equals.

Final answer:

Option C, The father's longing for a son in 'In the Time of the Butterflies' illustrates that female children are typically not regarded as equals to male children in patriarchal societies, where sons are preferred for reasons of inheritance, support, and carrying on the family lineage.

Explanation:

In the novel In the Time of the Butterflies, the father's desperation for a son signifies that within the context of the story's setting, female children are not customarily seen as the equal of male children. This reflects a patriarchal cultural perspective where male children are preferred because they are seen as future providers who can support their parents, inherit property, and carry on the family name. Females, on the other hand, are seen as needing to be married off and are often unable to inherit, potentially becoming a financial burden to their birth family.

The cultural implications suggest that a family may not feel complete without a male child and that daughters, while loved, are not valued in the same way as sons would be. This mindset is deeply ingrained in many traditional societies where gender roles are strictly defined, and economic considerations play a significant part in the perceived value of children based on their gender.

At Winn-Dixie, the drug test and intense application process, despite promising only a minimum wage position, underline the scrutiny and control exercised on these workers. It shows how the world views them, not as deserving respect and fair treatment, but as a workforce to be used. At Hearthside, the extensive suffering and hardship experienced by the staff further highlight the exploitation and lack of dignity afforded to low-wage workers. Final answer:

The plot is essential in a mystery narrative, containing the main events, conflicts, and character motivations that drive the story. It is often centered on crimes or puzzles, with character depth and parallels to other stories adding complexity to the mystery.

Explanation:

The plot is integral to mystery narratives, as it comprises the main events and conflicts that drive the story forward. In the context of a mystery, the plot is typically centered around events such as crimes, puzzles, or enigmas that require resolution. As the readers engage with the text, they encounter various clues and red herrings, which are carefully placed by the author to maintain suspense and encourage the reader to solve the mystery alongside the protagonist.

Mystery stories are often driven by character motivations and actions, in which authors not only focus on the external events but also provide detailed accounts of characters' thoughts and emotions. This character-driven approach allows readers to understand the reasons behind characters' behaviors, including those of the antagonist. A mystery's plot often involves a central conflict, reaches a climax with a significant turn of events, and concludes with a resolution. The sequence of these events and their believability are crucial factors in crafting a compelling mystery narrative.

Plots can also draw parallels with historical events, scientific facts, or cultural myths to add layers of complexity or thematic resonance to the story. For example, a plot might reference the story of Icarus, drawing a parallel between a character's hubristic pursuit of knowledge and the consequences that follow, bringing depth to the narrative's exploration of mystery and human ambition.

What is a paragraph?

A paragraph is a standalone section of writing that discusses a single subject or argument. While they are not needed by the orthographic norms of any language with a writing system, paragraphs are a common way to structure lengthy prose passages. The earliest forms of classical Britain and Roman writing, which could be written in boustrophedon, had little to no space between words (alternating directions).

The direction of text (left to right) is standardized throughout time. Word separators and final punctuation became widespread. The initial method of grouping sentences was the original paragraphos, which looked like an underscore at the start of a new group.

How can adhesive hurt pigeons?

Answers

Answer:

Yes it would harm them.

Explanation:

If they digested it or got covered all over it, it could harm them very badly and possibly kill them.

Adhesives can trap pigeons, impede their ability to fly or insulate themselves, and potentially lead to ingestion of toxic substances. Pigeons that come into contact with these substances during foraging or nesting can suffer from injuries or worse. The development and use of adhesives should take into consideration their impact on urban wildlife like pigeons.

Adhesives can pose a threat to pigeons similarly to how they may affect other wildlife. If adhesive substances are left in areas where pigeons are present, they may become trapped or stuck upon contact. The feathers of pigeons are vital for insulation and flight, and when coated with adhesive substances, it can impede their ability to fly or keep warm, potentially leading to injury or death. Moreover, pigeons often forage on the ground for food, and if an adhesive contaminates their feeding areas, it can lead to ingestion, which can be toxic or cause obstructions, adversely affecting their health.

Another aspect of adhesives that may harm pigeons is during nesting. The woodpigeons that build their nests by the river, for example, could inadvertently incorporate adhesives into their nests, which could entrap the birds or their offspring. Lastly, the research on improved reversible adhesives, inspired by the Gecko's adhesive abilities, reminds us that even though those developments are meant for human use, they can still pose risks to urban wildlife like pigeons if not properly managed. Thus, it is important to consider the impact of adhesives on pigeons when manufacturing and using these products.

Words that characterize feelings, judgments, or opinions are used to create a subjective tone. Details such as perceptions, senses, feelings, and thoughts are likely. An objective tone is neutral.

What is the importance of the tone?

Tone refers to a writer's attitude towards the topic and the reader. The tone of a document can influence how the reader interprets the author's intentions. These perceptions can then influence the reader's attitude toward the text and the author.

This headline implies that all Japanese people living in the area are spies, which is a gross overgeneralization and a highly subjective and biased perspective. The other three headlines are more objective in their tone, simply reporting the facts without adding unnecessary commentary or bias.

What experiment would youperform next to determine that the color initiated the defense response?A) Repeat the experiment by removing the patch completely.B) Repeat the experiment using a blue patch instead of an orange patch.C) Repeat the experiment by using a model of a robin that was twice the size of a normal robinbut with a small orange patch.D) Repeat the experiment by using a model of a robin that had an orange patch that was twicethe size of a normal patch. What is the acronym used to remember if the anode/cathode are negative or positive (Acronym is like L.E.O says G.E.R) * Measurements show that the enthalpy of a mixture of gaseous reactants increases by 215. kJ during a certain chemical reaction, which is carried out at a constant pressure. Furthermore, by carefully monitoring the volume change it is determined that -155. kJ of work is done on the mixture during the reaction.Calculate the change in energy of the gas mixture during the reaction. Round your answer to 2 significant digits. Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic? Nicotine stimulates the _____ center of the brain by causing it to release ________________. A block is initially at rest on top of an inclined ramp that makes an angle 0 with the horizontal. The base of the ramp has a length of D . After the block is released from rest, it slides down the ramp onto a rough horizontal surface until it comes to rest at a position x=4D from the base of the ramp, as shown in the figure. There is negligible friction between the block and the inclined ramp, while the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the rough horizontal surface is b .(a) On the axes below, sketch and label graphs of the following quantities as a function of the position of the block between x=D and x=4D . Calculations for values for the vertical axis are not necessary, but the same vertical scale should be used for both quantities.i. The kinetic energy K of the blockii. The gravitational potential energy Ug of the block-Earth system(b) The block is released from the top of a new ramp that has a base length of 2D, but still makes an angle 0 with the horizontal. A student is asked to predict whether the final horizontal position of the block will be twice as far from the base of the ramp compared to when it was released from the original ramp. The student reasons that since the block will be released from a new height that is twice as high as the original height, the block will have more energy when it reaches the base of the ramp, so it will slide farther along the right surface before stopping at a position x=8D.i. Which aspects of the students reasoning, if any, are correct? If no aspect of the students reasoning is correct, write none.ii. Which aspects of the students reasoning, if any, are incorrect? If no aspect of the students reasoning is incorrect, write none.(c) Derive an equation for the new final position of the block. Express your answer in terms of D.(d) In the following question, refer to the relationships written in part (c), not just the final answer obtained by manipulating those relationships. For any correct aspects of the students reasoning identified in part (b)(i), how is the students reasoning expressed by your mathematical relationships in part (c) ?For any incorrect aspects of the students reasoning identified in part (b)(ii), how do your relationships in part (c) correct the students incorrect reasoning?
