Answers

Where's the evolution?

The physics of light affects not just how blue water looks to us, but how the animals living in the world's oceans, lakes, and rivers are able to find food and each other — and this, in turn, can impact their evolution. Natural selection favors traits that perform well in local environmental conditions. Many fish species, for example, have evolved vision that is specifically tuned to see well in the sort of light available where they live. But even beyond simple adaptation, the physics of light can lead to speciation. In fact, biologists recently demonstrated that the light penetrating to different depths of Africa's Lake Victoria seems to have played a role in promoting a massive evolutionary radiation. More than 500 species of often brightly colored cichlid fish have evolved there in just a few hundred thousand years!

Final answer:

Natural selection in the cichlid species of Lake Victoria occurred through rapid adaptive radiation, with species diversifying into various niches. This process led to the creation of about 500 different cichlid species, emphasizing the role of natural selection in biodiversity.

Explanation:

Natural selection in the cichlid fish species of Lake Victoria occurred via adaptive radiation, which is a rapid branching through speciation of a phylogenetic tree into many closely related species. This diversification allowed the cichlids to fill different niches and habitats, resulting in hundreds of species with specialized feeding strategies such as eating plankton, scraping algae, eating insect larvae, and eating the eggs of other cichlid species. The cichlids' remarkable diversity, which included about 500 species, showcases the power of natural selection in shaping biodiversity within a relatively short span of time, in this case, less than three million years.

Unfortunately, the introduction of the Nile perch, declining lake water quality, and increased fishing pressure contributed to the dramatic decline and extinction of many cichlid species in Lake Victoria, reducing the once vibrant biodiversity.

Seeking shelter form the cold is an example of an

Answers

Hello there!

Seeking shelter from the cold is an example of Response to Temperature.

This all started with something called Negative Feedback which is a reaction that causing a return to Homeostasis. An example of a negative feedback is thermoregulation of someone's in a situation of being too cold. Thermoreceptors in your skin which are the receptors, send the information that the person is too cold to the Hypothalamus which is the control center. The control center analyzes the information and sends signals through the nervous system to the blood vessels, which are the effectors. Then Vasoconstriction occurs by causing the person to gain heat and return to homeostasis.

Thus, when your body is cold and you are looking for shelter or a blanket or whatever, your body is telling you that. That's how you know if you are too cold or not. This all happened with the three components of the negative feedback, which are the receptors, control center, and the effectors.

The town of Alpine Glen lies at the base of a mountain and next to the Alpine River. In recent months, the people of the town have noticed that the river has become much muddier, and that silt deposits have been building up along the river banks. Which of the following changes to the environment is the most likely cause of the change to the Alpine River?

A. Trees were cleared from a mountainside, causing an increase in soil erosion. B. Cattle or other livestock were introduced to the mountain, causing an increase in soil erosion.
C. A new dam began operating on the river, causing soil to be added to the water.
D. A new power plant increased the river temperature, causing the erosive force of the water to increase.

Answers

The answer is A because since the trees are being cut the soil runs off to the river banks

Answer:

Option A, Trees were cleared from a mountainside, causing an increase in soil erosion

Explanation:

The reason behind Alpine river getting muddier is that the surface runoff from the near by catchment areas consist of increased content of soil, clay, silt and debris.

This is possible only when the soil in the surrounding regions is loose enough to be carried away by water. And this is possible only when the trees in the near by areas are cut at a fast rate thereby leaving loose soil behind.

This loose soil is carried by water which drains into Alpine river and thus makes it muddier

Hence, option A is correct

How are the products represented in the chemical equation for photosynthesis?

Answers

I'll say this in both ways.

Photosynthesis takes the combination of carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O) and light energy, exclusively from the sun. This produces glucose (C6H12O6) and oxygen (6O2.) This is a balanced synthesis.

The equation would be 6CO2 + 6H2O + Light = C6H12O6 + 6O2.

Answer:

C6H12O6 + 6O2

Explanation:

The product is what the plant releases after photosynthesis. The chemical formula for glucose and oxygen is C6H12O6 + 6O2.

An amoeba is a single-celled organism that feeds on algae, plant cells, and bacteria. When an amoeba feeds, it first makes contact with the food particle. Next, the amoeba starts to surround the particle. Once the particle is completely engulfed, it is surrounded by a layer of the amoeba's membrane, forming a vesicle. The pH in the vesicle is then lowered and the contents are degraded. What type of transport is involved in this process? A. endocytosis B. diffusion C. exocytosis D. passive transport

Answers

Final answer:

An amoeba feeds through a process called endocytosis, specifically phagocytosis. This involves engulfing food particles with its plasma membrane which forms a vesicle. The food is then broken down and absorbed, and waste is expelled through exocytosis.

Explanation:

The process through which an amoeba feeds is called endocytosis. This is a type of active transport that involves the movement of particles such as large molecules, parts of cells, and even whole cells, into a cell. The amoeba surrounds the food particle with its plasma membrane, which invaginates, forming a pocket around the food particle. This pocket then pinches off, resulting in the food particle being contained in a newly created intracellular vesicle formed from the plasma membrane. This is sometimes referred to as phagocytosis, a type of endocytosis. Once the food particle is fully enclosed in the vesicle, it is broken down and absorbed by the amoeba. Any waste that remains is then expelled from the amoeba through a process known as exocytosis.

Suzy uses an italian salad dressing on her lunch. This ____________ mixture is a suspension of oil and vinegar. A) heterogeneous B) heterologous C) homogeneous D) homologous

Answers

Salad dressing is an example of a heterogeneous mixture. The reason it is heterogeneous is because not everything is perfectly mixed in together. In most salad dressings, there are chunks or particles that you can visibly see and separate. For the mixture to be considered homogeneous, everything would have to be combined smoothly, you wouldn't be able to see any chunks, and nothing would have been able to be separated, at least by physical means.

A mixture is a solution or a suspension that is made up of two or more components. Mixtures can be classified as:

Homogeneous mixturesHeterogeneous mixtures

This heterogeneous mixture is a suspension of oil and vinegar.

An Italian salad dressing is a mixture that is made up of components such as oil, vinegar, spices e.t.c

When oil mixes with vinegar the solution formed is called an immiscible solution. This is because oil mixing with vinegar does not form a uniform solution.

Hence, a mixture of oil and vinegar is a heterogeneous mixture.

Therefore, the correct option is Option A.

Why does darkness affect the light-independent reactions of photosynthesis? Plants stop their daytime activities and rest during the night much like animals do. ... Mitochondria produce sugars more effectively in the darkness than chloroplasts do. Light independent reactions require the energy gathered in the

Darkness affects the light-independent reactions or Calvin cycle in photosynthesis indirectly by halting the production of ATP and NADPH from the light-dependent reactions, which are necessary for the Calvin cycle to synthesize carbohydrates.

Light-independent reactions, also known as the Calvin cycle, in photosynthesis, don't necessarily occur in darkness but are called 'light-independent' because they do not require light to proceed. They use the ATP and NADPH produced in the light-dependent reactions to convert carbon dioxide into carbohydrates. However, the Calvin cycle can be indirectly affected by darkness because the light-dependent reactions, which produce the ATP and NADPH needed for the Calvin cycle, cease without light. Without these products, the Calvin cycle cannot proceed efficiently. Additionally, enzymes like rubisco in the Calvin cycle are also sensitive to light and may be less active in the dark, further reducing the Calvin cycle's effectiveness at night.

Which step utilizes ATP in cellular respiration

Answers

Answer: Glycolysis

The first stage of cellular respiration is glycolysis that takes place in the cytosol of the cytoplasm. Basically, in this process, the glucose splits up. The enzymes break down the glucose molecules into molecules of pyruvic acid. To split the glucose molecules energy is needed and that energy is provided by the molecules of ATP.

The kerbs cycle is the third stage of the cellular respiration. The pyruvic acid molecules that were produced in the first step i.e. glycolysis, enters the mitochondrion and starts the kerbs cycle. And the energy from the molecules is stored in 16 energy carrier molecules which includes four molecules of ATP’s as well.

The chemical symbol for hydrogen is H, water is H2O, argon is Ar, and uranium is U. The start of every symbol is a capital letter, so each element only has one capital letter. B. only passive transport requires energy (ATP) and moves molecules from low to high concentration
C. active and passive transport are basically the same thing

Answers

a: only active transport requires energy .......
Final answer:

Active transport requires energy and moves molecules against their concentration gradient, while passive transport does not require energy and moves molecules following their concentration gradient.

Explanation:

The fundamental difference between active and passive transport lies in the requirement of energy and the direction of molecular movement. Active transport requires energy, usually in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and moves molecules against their concentration gradient (low to high concentration). Examples of active transport include the sodium-potassium pump where sodium ions are pumped out of cells and potassium ions are pumped into cells, both against their concentration gradients.

On the other hand, passive transport does not require energy and moves molecules from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration, following their concentration gradient. Examples of passive transport include simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion.

Why is a temperature between 0 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees celcius is still important

Answer:

Protein activity rises as temperature  rises, and in turn, improves the rate of the reaction.

Explanation:

Warmth plays a vital role in biology as a way to control reactions. Protein activity rises as temperature  rises, and in turn, improves the rate of the reaction. This also means activity lowers at colder  temperatures. All proteins have a variety of temperatures when they are working, but there are some  temperatures where they work optimally. Using the latest Celsius mode of temperature measurement, we  can quickly discover how warm or cool it is. It was also known as Centigrade. This is because it is based  on the freezing and boiling points of water with 100 degrees within those temperatures. The main SI unit  of temperature is the Kelvin, which measures certain temperatures. However, for our everyday practice,  we use Celsius which is directly associated to kelvins. This is placed so that pure liquid freezes at zero  degrees Celsius and boils at one hundred degrees Celsius.

Which surface of an epithelial cell lies closest to its blood supply

Answers

Answer: Basal surface is the surface of epithelial cell lies closest to its blood supply.

There are three surfaces in the epithelial cell.

1. apical

2. lateral

3. basal

1. Apical surface :  This is the surface which faces towards the cell and it is the exposed layer.

2. Lateral surface : This is the surface which is in between the adjacent cells.

3. Basal surface :  It is divided into two lamina : Basal and Reticulate.

Basal lamina is made up of glycoproteins and collagen, this lamina remains separated from underlying connective tissue. Basal lamina is in attachment with Reticulate lamina.  Reticulate lamina is in contact with underlying connective tissues this arrangement forms a basal membrane for linking the epithelial surface with connective tissue layer or region of blood supply.

Answer: The surface of an epithelial cell which lies closest to its blood supply is called as the Basal surface.

Epithelial cell is primarily composed of two surface-

1) Apical surface- It is exposed to the environment and lies towards the lumen or internal organ cavity.

2) Basal/ Basolateral surface- It is not exposed to the environment. It lies interiorly and attached to the basement membrane via integrin.

Epithelial cells do not have own blood supply. For obtaining nutrients, they are dependent on the blood capillaries which are present in the nearby tissues. For accomplishing this, the basal surface of epithelial cell plays an essential role. The nutrients from blood enters basal surface via basement membrane which is a selectively permeable membrane.

Thus, basal surface of epithelial cells lies closest to the blood supply.

What does gel electrophoresis do?

Answers

Final answer:

Gel electrophoresis is a technique used to separate molecules like DNA, RNA, or proteins according to size and charge, by applying an electric field. The molecules move through a gel which acts as a sieve, allowing size-based separation, and the results are visualized using specific dyes.

Explanation:

Gel electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA, or proteins based on their size and charge. The process involves using a gel as a filter to sort the molecules as they are forced through it by an electric field. Because nucleic acids and proteins have different charges under certain conditions, they will move through the gel at different rates. DNA, for example, possesses a net negative charge due to the phosphate groups along its backbone, making it migrate towards the positive electrode. Shorter DNA fragments move through the gel faster than the longer ones due to the gel's sieving effect, allowing for the separation based on size. After the electrophoresis, these separated fragments appear as bands on the gel which can then be stained with a specific dye to make them visible for analysis.

How is information converted into translation

Answers

I think it would be A. From nucleic acids to amino acids.

Hope this helped!

Translation in biology refers to the process where the genetic code from mRNA is deciphered by ribosomes to produce proteins through initiation, elongation, and termination steps.

Translation is the biological process by which the genetic code contained in mRNA (messenger RNA) is read by a ribosome to synthesize a specific protein. This process is crucial for gene expression in all living organisms. Translation can be broken down into several key steps:

Initiation: The ribosome assembles around the target mRNA. The first tRNA is attached at the start codon.Elongation: The ribosome continues to translate the mRNA, one codon at a time, and individual amino acids are added by their corresponding tRNAs (transfer RNAs) to the growing polypeptide chain.Termination: The process ends when a stop codon is reached, and the ribosome releases the completed polypeptide.

This conversion from nucleotides to amino acids involves not only the ribosomes and tRNAs but also numerous other enzymes including aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases which play a role in the activation of amino acids.

In summary, translation is the information conversion process that synthesizes proteins by decoding the sequence of nucleotides in an mRNA into a specific sequence of amino acids in a protein.

International environmental laws are needed in order to ensure that the whole world is protected from environmental degradation.

Many pollutants can migrate from the sources where they are released to other places, very distant from the point of release. Often times, pollutants do not recognize international boundaries.

Pollutant gases released in one country may still be detected in another country far away from the country where the gases were released.

As a result of this, it is important to have international laws that set limits concerning the maximum allowable concentration of certain pollutants that can be discharged into air, water or land.

By so doing, the whole world will be protected from the harmful effects of dangerous pollutants.
