Explanation:
what is animalism as the way it's discussed in animal farm
Animalism in 'Animal Farm' symbolizes a socio-political doctrine of equal rights, originally aimed at creating a fair society for all animals in George Orwell's allegory. However, the concept is corrupted by power, leading to an unequal society under the guise of equality, famously summed up by, "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
In Animal Farm, animalism refers to a doctrine that advocates for equal rights and fair treatment of animals. It is an allegorical construct that represents communism and socialism as seen in the Russian Revolution. The animals in the story, led by the pigs, revolt against the oppressive farmer, Mr. Jones, to establish a new society based on equality. However, this society is eventually corrupted by greed, and a new maxim arises: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." This reflects how original principles of freedom and justice can be subverted by those in power. The concept of animalism also draws parallels with the broader social movement towards ethical treatment of animals. Influential works like Upton Sinclair's The Jungle highlighted the need for consideration of non-human interests within human societies. Yet, Animal Farm critiques how revolutionary ideals can be compromised when the leaders, like the pigs, become indistinguishable from the oppressors they overthrew. The interplay between these values and the eventual betrayal of the animalist principles forms a central theme of George Orwell's novel, reflecting on the dangers of power and the fragility of utopian visions.

Examination of Figurative Language in "Concrete Mixers" by Patricia Hubbell
In the poem "Concrete Mixers," Patricia Hubbell uses a rich tapestry of figurative language to compare the concrete mixers to elephants. The parts of the mixers are likened to elephant-bellied and elephant-nosed, emphasizing their large, robust structures. These machines are described as standing in muck, akin to how elephants might stand in their habitat. The drivers of the mixers are compared to mahouts, which are elephant trainers and caretakers, as they 'perch on their backs' and control the powerful equipment.
The comparison establishes a parallel between the construction environment and the natural strength and grandeur of elephants. The mixers moving, bellowing, and spraying water are all actions that mirror the behaviors of these majestic animals. This figurative language not only creates vivid imagery but also imparts a sense of might and purpose to the urban construction scene. The concreteness of the imagery draws the reader into the experience and allows for a deeper understanding and appreciation of the mundane through the grandiose comparisons.
By drawing these comparisons, Hubbell effectively uses figurative language to transform a common urban sight into a spectacle of nature's power. The physicality of the mixers and their association with elephants render the poem more impactful, engaging the reader's senses and imagination. This connection between man-made construction and natural strength underlines the resilience and significance of urban development, symbolically raised by the 'trunks' of these 'urban elephants.'

excerpt from "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" by Frederick Douglass
Go where you may, search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the old world, travel through South America, search out every abuse, and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me, that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival.
Refer to Explorations in Literature for a complete version of this speech.
Which statement best describes Douglass's purpose in this excerpt?
to communicate America’s uniqueness in the world
to prove that abuses are common in all parts of the world
to provide evidence in support of his claim that freedom is essential to happiness
to reinforce his main argument that slavery opposes the ideals of America
The statement that best describes Douglass's purpose in this excerpt is:
to reinforce his main argument that slavery opposes the ideals of America.
In the passage from Frederick Douglass's speech What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Douglass is addressing the issue of slavery in America and its contradiction with the ideals of freedom and liberty that America purports to uphold. The passage begins with an invitation to compare the practices of America with those of other nations around the world, both in the past (monarchies and despotisms of the old world) and in the present (travel through South America). Douglass is asking the audience to consider the reality of America's treatment of slaves and to weigh it against the perceived barbarity and hypocrisy of other nations.
The key phrases in the passage are revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy and the assertion that America reigns without a rival in these aspects. This indicates that Douglass is not simply communicating America's uniqueness in the world (option a) or proving that abuses are common everywhere (option b), as these interpretations would not align with the strong language he uses to single out America.
Furthermore, while Douglass does mention the everyday practices of the nation, the context suggests that his purpose is not to provide evidence in support of the claim that freedom is essential to happiness (option c), but rather to highlight the stark contrast between the ideals America stands for, particularly on the Fourth of July, and the reality of slavery within its borders.
Therefore, the most accurate description of Douglass's purpose is to reinforce his main argument that slavery opposes the ideals of America (option d). He is emphasizing that the existence of slavery in a country that celebrates independence and freedom is the ultimate form of hypocrisy, and it is this contradiction that he seeks to expose and condemn through his speech.

The Wind begun to rock the Grass
With threatening Tunes and low--
He threw a Menace at the Earth--
A Menace at the Sky.
The Leaves unhooked themselves from Trees--
And started all abroad
The Dust did scoop itself like Hands
And threw away the Road.
The Wagons quickened on the Streets
The Thunder hurried slow--
The Lightning showed a Yellow Beak
And then a livid Claw.
The Birds put up the Bars to Nests--
The Cattle fled to Barns--
There came one drop of Giant Rain
And then as if the Hands
That held the Dams had parted hold
The Waters Wrecked the Sky,
But overlooked my Father's House--
Just quartering a Tree--

Read this passage from Mrs. Charles Gulick, an anti-suffragist arguing against giving women the vote
Someone said recently: "A man must have a place to go from and to come to." In order to make him continue to want to go from and come to his home, there must be something there to make him look forward to the home-coming with pleasure as the reward of his labor. If this home is kept by a woman who cannot be at home often when most needed, who labors under the excitement of the political campaign, how long is he going to look forward to his home-coming? Of course, the answer to this is that most women would not spend any more time over politics than they do now. But if that is so, of what use will they be as voters, and why add a perfectly useless body of voters, when this addition to the electorate will mean an increase in the expenses of the government and consequently higher cost of living, already too high for the average family?
A student wrote the following claim about Mrs. Gulick’s argument. Which statement provides the most direct example of evidence from the passage to support the student’s claim?
