(4) Her mother had helped with the makeup, and Renee’s sister had found a messy wig for her to wear. (5) Renee felt very confident as she rang the doorbell. (6) Renee felt a furious blush spread across her cheeks. (7) All of her excitement, however, disappeared when the door opened and she saw the other party guests. (8) No one else was wearing a costume. Which revision BEST creates effective and appropriate organization for this story? A) Move sentence 3 to follow sentence 4. B) Move sentence 6 to follow sentence 8. C) Move sentence 7 to follow sentence 5. D) Move sentence 8 to follow sentence 1.

Answers

The story reads well up through sentence 5, but things get a bit confusing with sentence 6. What makes Renee blush? Is it really in response to her ringing the doorbell? Sentence 7, the answering of the door, should naturally follow sentence 5, the ringing of the bell. So where, then, should sentence 6 go? We learn in sentence 8 that Renee is the only person wearing a costume.  If you consider what it is that makes Renee blush, it stands to reason that sentence 6 should follow sentence 8. Thus, the best answer here is B.

(1) In the winter of 1980, Dr. Keith Farrow and Emily Lane, a professor and a graduate student at Hickory College, they began to discuss turning a parcel of land on the west side of campus into an arboretum. (2) This was around the time that the United States men’s ice hockey team shocked the world by winning the gold medal in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. (3) A grove of sycamore trees on the land was plagued with disease. (4) It was also in a state of serious neglect. (5) Few people held out much hope that any of the trees in the grove could be saved. (7) In 1981, a fundraising drive was begun by the Hickory College Green Thumb Club to raise additional money for the project.

(8) Meanwhile, Dr. Farrow and Mrs. Lane began to use their grant money to try to salvage some of the sycamore trees. (9) Their efforts were fairly successful; only six trees could not be saved. (10) The Green Thumb Club then divided the land formerly occupied by the dead trees into small plots. (11) These plots were used for organic gardening. (12) By the summer of 1982, the newly named McCauley Arboretum was up and running. (13) Today it is one of Hickory College’s most beloved campus features.

Which of the following sentences does not belong in the first paragraph of the passage?

Sentence 3

Sentence 1

Sentence 2

Sentence 5

Sentence 4

Answers

The purpose of this paragraph is to discuss the development of the McCauley Arboretum. Those sentences that discuss the origins as well as the development of the arboretum are necessary to the passage.

Let's look at the first paragraph in further detail.

(1) In the winter of 1980, Dr. Keith Farrow and Emily Lane, a professor and a graduate student at Hickory College, they began to discuss turning a parcel of land on the west side of campus into an arboretum.
-- This sentence is necessary to understanding the origins of the arboretum and should not be removed the paragraph.

(2) This was around the time that the United States men’s ice hockey team shocked the world by winning the gold medal in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
-- This point, while certainly interesting, is not necessary to understanding either the origins or the development of the arboretum.

(3) A grove of sycamore trees on the land was plagued with disease.
-- This sentence tells us about the parcel of land used for the arboretum.

(4) It was also in a state of serious neglect.
-- This sentence also provides further details about the land used for the arboretum.

(5) Few people held out much hope that any of the trees in the grove could be saved.
-- This sentences indicates that many thought the land would not be good for anything.

(6) Dr. Farrow and Mrs. Lane, however, formed a committee devoted to doing just that and, to everyone’s surprise and delight, were awarded a grant from the EPA to save the grove and establish the arboretum.
-- This sentence proves the importance of the previous two sentences. Although the land was in a state of neglect and many thought the trees could not be saved, Farrow and Lane were able to turn the land around.

(7) In 1981, a fundraising drive was begun by the Hickory College Green Thumb Club to raise additional money for the project.
-- This sentence provides further information about the project begun by Farrow and Lane.

Therefore, Sentence 2 is not necessary to the paragraph's main idea and should be removed.

Final answer:

As per the given passage, sentence 2, regarding the U.S. men's ice hockey team, does not belong to the first paragraph as it is unrelated to the main topic of creating an arboretum.

Explanation:

The sentence that does not belong in the first paragraph of the passage is Sentence 2. This sentence about the United States men's ice hockey team is unrelated to the main topic of the paragraph, which is the establishment of an arboretum. The other sentences all directly relate to the creation, challenging circumstances, and eventual success of the arboretum project led by Dr. Farrow and Mrs. Lane.

What is paragraph writing?

Paragraph refers to a collection of sentences about a specific subject. As practically everything we write, including answers, essays, stories, emails, etc. is written in paragraphs.

We might say that the foundation of successful writing is a well-structured paragraph. The paragraph's objectives are to provide information, explain something, create story, and persuade the reader that our notion is sound.  A longer piece of writing, such as stories, novels, essays, creative writing, or professional writing, is segmented into paragraphs to make it easier to read and comprehend.

Therefore, we can conclude that above are the correct options of Ralph's essay writing plan.

According to Hamlet Fortibras is an admirable man. how does the sight of Fortinbras and his troops change hamlets attitude

Answers

Hamlet sees Fortinbras and his troops--twenty thousand soldiers--ready to lay down their lives for a plot of land that means nothing to them. When he sees this he realizes that if so many men are willing to die for something basically worthless, he is even more of a coward than he thought because he won't even fight to avenge his father's murder. He becomes disgusted with himself in his soliloquy at the end of this scene and vows to take action. This is Hamlet's major shift in the play: he says, at the end "my thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth", and from this point on in the play he becomes more ruthless (getting Rosencrantz and Guildenstern killed to start) and goal-oriented towards killing Claudius.

Fortinbras is presented in the play as Hamlet's foil. This means that he is a character that embodies everything that Hamlet is not. Hamlet himself is aware of this. While Hamlet feels compelled to avenge his father's murder, he is plagued with indecision, and this leads him to delay taking action. On the other hand, Fortinbras is brave and decisive, and he is not scared to die in order to regain his father's holdings. Hamlet admires this attitude, and this is the thing that motivates him to be different and become more bold and decisive.

Which sentence uses a comma correctly?
A )Until the next meeting, we should focus on selecting music. B) We have made many decisions, we need to make a few more.
C ) The party will, not go forward, unless we can come to an agreement.
D ) In the beginning, of this process we had more patience for each other.

Answers

Hey there!

A comma is used to indicate a breif stop in the beginning of a sentence, usually to provide drama or emphasis on certain parts of the sentence. For example:

My favorite foods are apples, (stop), oranges, (stop), and pears(stop).

Let's start from D. We'll write it with stops and determine whether it makes sense by reading it aloud:

"In the beginning(stop) of this process we had more patience for each other.

This is incorrect, as you should not stop after saying "in the beginning".

For C:

"The party will(stop) not go forward (stop) unless we can come to an agreement."

This too is incorrect. Stopping after "the party will", and again after "not go forward", doesn't sound grammatically correct.

For B:

"We have made many decisions (stop) we need to make a few more."

Reading this aloud, we notice an immediate mistake. Stopping after decisions doesn't make any sense, and in order to illustrate that intended "and we need to make a few more", a semicolon (;) would make more sense.

For A:

"Until the next meeting(Stop), we should focus on selecting music."

This one is grammatically correct. It correctly demonstrates a stop after the word meeting, just like used in regular oral and sentence speaking.

Hope this helps!

A) Until the next meeting, we should focus on selecting music.

CLASSIFYING SENTENCES BY STRUCTURE Classify each of the following sentences according to its structure. Decide whether the sentence is compound, complex, or compound-complex. Sometimes the air that is rushing in begins to rotate, and a tornado is formed.

Answers

Final answer:

The sentence 'Sometimes the air that is rushing in begins to rotate, and a tornado is formed' is classified as a compound sentence. It contains two independent clauses joined by the coordinating conjunction 'and' without any subordinate clauses.

Explanation:

When classifying sentences by their structure, it's important to determine the number and types of clauses they contain. The sentence in question is 'Sometimes the air that is rushing in begins to rotate, and a tornado is formed.' This sentence is made up of two independent clauses: 'Sometimes the air that is rushing in begins to rotate' and 'a tornado is formed,' which are connected by a coordinating conjunction 'and.' There are no subordinate clauses present in this sentence, making it a compound sentence, not a complex or compound-complex sentence. According to the different ways that you can create compound sentences, such as through the use of coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, or so), this sentence falls under that specific structure because it uses 'and' to connect the two independent clauses.

The sentence is complex because it comprises an independent clause ("Sometimes the air that is rushing in begins to rotate") and a dependent clause ("and a tornado is formed"). This structure demonstrates a relationship between the two clauses, with one being more dependent on the other for a complete thought.

The provided sentence, "Sometimes the air that is rushing in begins to rotate, and a tornado is formed," is a complex sentence. To understand this classification, let's break down the definitions of compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.

A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (such as "and," "but," or "or"). Each independent clause could stand alone as a complete sentence. An example would be: "The sun was shining, and the birds were singing."

A complex sentence has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. A dependent clause is not a complete thought and relies on the independent clause to form a complete sentence. In the given sentence, "Sometimes the air that is rushing in begins to rotate" is the independent clause, and "and a tornado is formed" is a dependent clause.

A compound-complex sentence is a combination of a compound and a complex sentence. It includes multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Your sentence doesn't fall into this category as it contains only one independent clause and one dependent clause.

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

one effective way to develop your own personal writing style is to

A) avoid uncommon punctuation

B) read the works of expert authors

C) restrict your language as much as possible

D) keep the same set of characters in your writing

Answers

Hi!

The answer is B) read the works of expert authors

This would be an excellent way to improve your own writing skills because you can apply the same style of writing that people who are already an expert in such a field have mastered.
Short Answer B<<<<====

If you think it is D, then pretty soon you will be in a rut, unless these characters meet other characters. Then it's fine. Series of novels written by women quite commonly do this. The main character of one novel will become a minor character in another.

Never restrict your language. It is just about the worst thing you can do.

Punctuation is a very minor part of writing style. Be sure and use standard punctuation. Punctuation always aids a reader. Weird punctuation is not a good idea.

We're left with reading expert authors. You want to do this to allow yourself to appreciate what you are reading. Good language flows and good characters handled by experts become our friends and guides while we read about them. The more you appreciate good writing, the more you will want to find your own voice.

Write a single scene that uses rich description to build suspense. Use vivid imagery that conveys elements of the supernatural in order to present a single, suspenseful moment to your readers. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answers

In my opinion, the best way to approach writing a scene like this is to imagine it first. Imagine what is happening. The question says there must be a "suspenseful moment," so think of some situation that would be very tense and dramatic, something like a life-or-death moment or a heated argument. Now freeze that moment in your mind and look at it. Describe where your characters are, what they look like, and what they're doing in this moment. Your question also says to incorporate elements of the supernatural into your scene. Think about what that means to you and what supernatural elements might be included with what else is going on. I think once you get your imagination going, you will be able to picture it perfectly. Then you just have to write what you see in your mind's eye.
