Write a summary of 250-500 words, i.e., 1/2 to 1 page, of Matthew's life both before and after he became a follower of Jesus. Include Scripture verses and other source information to back up your summary.

Answers

Answer 1

Matthew the Apostle, Saint Matthew or Levi was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus and one of the four Evangelists. He is believed to have written the first of the Gospels.

Before Jesus came into his life, Matthew was a tax collector, a worker for the Roman government who lived off getting money from the common people. He would tax at higher rates than the romans charged for his own benefit. It is possible that Matthew was rich and accommodated before his time with Jesus.

Tax collectors were considered sinners and were despised by the common people in the times of Jesus.

When Matthew had his calling, he invited Jesus for dinner at his home, inviting many tax collectors to dine along with them. This made others question the companions of Jesus, for they were sinful and corrupted tax collector. It was then when Jesus said "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick...I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (Mark 2: 17, Luke 5: 32)

After this, he followed Jesus and left behind his riches and comforts and faced the hardship of traveling and fasting, he eventually became a Martyr.

Matthew preached the Gospel to Jewish communities in Judea. He was witness of the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus and proclaimed that he was the new Messiah.

Matthew is recognized as a Saint and his feast day is celebrated on September 21st in the West and November 16th in the East.

Answer 2

Answer:

Matthew was an unfair tax collector consumed by selfishness until Jesus chose him as a disciple. So Matthew is in Capernaum, in his tax booth on the main roadway, he was collecting business on foreign stuff brought by farmers, dealers, and caravans, under the Roman Empire's rule, Matthew would have paid all the taxes in advance, then collected from the citizens and travelers to repay himself. On the same day Jesus invited Matthew to follow him, Matthew threw a big farewell dinner in his home, inviting his friends so they could meet Jesus too. From that time on, instead of collecting tax money, Matthew collected souls for Christ. Matthew 9:9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

By circumnavigating Africa , Vasco da Gama became the first European to reach the East Indies by sea.

True/False

Answers

true. 1497–1499: The Portuguese Vasco da Gama, accompanied by Nicolau Coelho and Bartolomeu Dias, isthe first European to reach India by an all-sea route fromEurope.

Vasco da Gama was not the first European to circumnavigate Africa, but he was the first to reach India by sea in 1498, establishing a direct maritime route and building upon previous explorations like those of Bartolomeu Dias.

The statement that Vasco da Gama was the first European to reach the East Indies by sea by circumnavigating Africa is false. Da Gama was not the first to circumnavigate Africa, but he was indeed significant for being the first to reach India by sea. In 1498, Vasco da Gama sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, traversed the Indian Ocean, and arrived at Calicut on the southwestern coast of India. His journey was of great importance as it established a direct maritime trading route between Europe and Asia, especially for spices, silks, and other valuable goods of the region.

Before da Gama, it was the explorer Bartolomeu Dias who first sailed around the southern tip of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, in 1488. Dias opened up the possibility for future explorers to utilize this route to reach Asia. Thus, da Gama's successful venture to India was built upon the discoveries that Dias and other explorers had made.

Which of these was originally called new Amsterdam

Answers

New York used to be called New Amsterdam
Final answer:

New Amsterdam, now known as New York City, was established as a Dutch settlement in 1624. It was captured by English forces in 1664 and subsequently renamed New York. One notable historic event was the creation of a protective wall which gave birth to what is now known as Wall Street.

Explanation:

The city that was originally called New Amsterdam is now known as New York City. Founded by the Dutch in 1624, New Amsterdam was a thriving center of trade situated at the southern tip of what is now Manhattan Island. The city was taken over by an English military expedition in 1664 and subsequently renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York.

The Dutch founded their North American settlement, New Netherland, primarily as a fur-trading post and established their headquarters in New Amsterdam (now New York City). A momentous event in the city's history was the building of a protective wall on its northeastern border. Constructed by enslaved Africans under orders from Dutch director-general Peter Stuyvesant to defend the city from Native American attacks, the street running along this fortification became known as Wall Street, now a major economic hub and the location of the New York Stock Exchange.

Despite the disruptions of warfare and conflict, New Amsterdam grew into a prosperous colony populated by people from across Europe and Africa. Today it is known as New York City and carries its history as a vibrant, multicultural metropolis that continues to be a major center of global trade and commerce.

The 1964 gulf of Tonkin resolution?

Answers

Answer: The Gulf of Tonkin resolution authorized the US President to do what he felt necessary to bring peace to Southeast Asia.  It led to massive escalation of US military involvement in the Vietnam War.

Detail:

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was a measure passed by US Congress that allowed the US President to make military actions, like increase troops, without formal declaration of war.  It led to huge escalation of US involvement in the Vietnam War. The resolution was passed by Congress in August, 1964, after alleged attacks on two US naval ships in the Gulf of Tonkin.  The key wording in the resolution said:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that the Congress approves and supports the determination of the President, as Commander in Chief, to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.

That resolution served as a blank check for President Johnson to send troops to whatever extent he deemed necessary in pursuance of the war.  Between 1964 and the end of Johnson's presidency in 1969, US troop levels in Vietnam increased from around 20,000 to over 500,000.

Answer:

authorized the president to deal with threats in Southeast Asia as he saw fit.

The Pax Romana or Roman Peace was: Select one: a. an occasional reality b. a product of Roman conquest c. a one-sided view d. all of the above

Answers

The Roman Peace was a period of time approximately between 24 B.C. and 180  A.D., also called Pax Augusta, since the first Roman emperor to rule these years was Caesar Augustus. This refers to the peaceful time of those 200 hundred yearts in which the Roman Empire consolidated its power and flourished in several aspects such as economy, culture and politically.

It was an occasional reality, because it certainly came to an end, and the upcoming years were conflictive. In addition to that,it was an effect of Roman conquests, and the assimilation of the conquered nations of Roman culture, language and law, so answers a and b might apply, but more strongly B,because the Roman Peace had direct effect over the territories they had conquered around the Mediterranean Sea.

Finally, it could not be completely accurate to say that it was an one sided view, because if it had been a weak peace, there wouldn´t have been possibilities to develop as they did during those 200 years.

The Pax Romana can be best described as 'd. all of the above' because it embodies an occasionally achieved reality, is a direct result of Roman conquests, and also presents a one-sided view of peace from the perspective of the empire's rulers, overlooking the oppressed and conquered peoples.

The Pax Romana or Roman Peace was a multifaceted period characterized by significant aspects that justify selecting 'd. all of the above' as the correct answer. Firstly, it was indeed an occasional reality throughout its roughly 200-year span, initiated by Augustus and continuing until the death of Marcus Aurelius, where the Roman Empire experienced unprecedented peace and prosperity. This era was deeply rooted in Roman conquest, as the peace and stability within the Empire were outcomes of its extensive military victories and effective governance over its vast territories. However, it also represented a one-sided view, especially from the perspective of conquered people and those within the lower strata of Roman society, for whom the consequences of imperialism and oppression were a stark reality. Through effective policies like divide and conquer, establishing colonies, and converting former enemies into allies, Romans not only ensured lasting peace within their borders but also spread their influence, culture, and language across the known world.

What economic policies violated the colonists civil liberties and lead to the revolution

Answers

The American Revolution began as a dispute over the way Great Britain treated the colonies and the way the colonies felt should be treated by Great Britain. During 1607 until 1763 the "Salutary Neglect" system imposed by the British was in place, during this system, the British were careless regarding the implementation of external commerce relations. The British believed that this freedom would motivate commerce, but due to the French And Indian War, the British implemented more taxes on the colonists, in order to recover from the economic troubles in which this War left them.

This did not got over well for the colonists. New taxes were imposed including The Sugar Act , which taxed sugar and cut molasses tax in half; and The Currency Act, which forbidden the printing of the money in the colonies as an effort to control the colonies. The colonists felt that they had insufficient representation, they also felt overtaxed, and not able to pay a part of free trade, so they started to use the sentence "No Taxation Without Representation".

The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1783, was a significant agreement that ended the American Revolutionary War. One of its primary terms was the recognition of the United States as an independent nation by Britain, which marked a considerable milestone in American history. Additionally, the treaty required that all British forces leave American territory and stipulated that Congress recommend to the individual states to return confiscated properties to Loyalists, those who remained loyal to Britain during the war. The treaty also defined the territorial boundaries of the new nation, granting the U.S. land east of the Mississippi River, north of Florida, and south of Canada. These boundaries were crucial in shaping the early geographic and political landscape of the United States. Lastly, the treaty ensured the navigation of the Mississippi River was to remain open to both American and British vessels, which was vital for trade and economic development.

Answers

the great awakening is a religious and spiritual movement, however the enlightenment is scientific spirit and reasoning.....there are many who feel that it was a reaction to the thinking that developed as a result of Enlightenment and an attempt to turn people’s attention back to church and god.
Final answer:

The Great Awakening and the Enlightenment originated from Europe but greatly influenced the Anglo-American colonies. Both movements emphasized individual freedom and led to significant societal changes. However, while the Great Awakening focused on emotional religiosity and personal salvation, the Enlightenment emphasized rationalism and critical investigation.

Explanation:

The Great Awakening and the Enlightenment were both intellectual and cultural movements that originated in Europe but influenced the Anglo-American colonies heavily. The Great Awakening was characterized by a fervent, emotional religiosity. It emphasized personal and experiential faith, rejecting the idea of predestination. It propagated the message that individuals could bring about their own salvation by accepting Christ, which was particularly attractive to those who had felt excluded by traditional Protestantism.

On the other hand, the Enlightenment emphasized the use of reason in understanding and interrogating the human condition. This movement encouraged critical thinking and freed societies from superstitions, social rigidity, and unquestioned religiosity. Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke, Isaac Newton, and Voltaire propagated ideas of openness, investigation, and religious tolerance.

While these movements seem different in their approaches, they share similarities in their impact and objectives. They both advocated for individual freedom—whether in terms of personal salvation in the Great Awakening or in terms of intellectual and societal freedom in the Enlightenment. They both incited societal changes, the Great Awakening led to the rise of several Protestant denominations while the Enlightenment led to political democratization and economic development.
