Explain the purposes behind Dante’s development and use of the contrapasso. Your answer should be at least 250 words.
What makes Dante's work so remarkable is his creation of the contrapasso - punishments in Inferno that ironically reflect or contrast the sin itself. We learn about this term in Canto XXVIII, when Bertran de Born states, "Thus is observed in me the counterpoise." In this, he is physcally separated by decapitation, and carries his talking head. He explains that his sin is a political one, by turning the Young King against his father.
"Know that Bertram de Born am I, the same
Who gave to the Young King the evil comfort.
I made the father and the son rebellious;
Achitophel not more with Absalom
And David did with his accursed goadings.
Because I parted persons so united,
Parted do I now bear my brain, alas!"
(XXVIII, 142)
The purpose behind the contrapasso is to serve a divine karma to the souls of the Inferno. Instead of generalizing the punishment unfairly, each soul is tortured as a reflection of their chosen sin during their life. For instance, located in the First Circle are unbaptized souls or virtuous pagans who are neither in Hell or out of it. While they have not sinned, they were unable to chose a side or accept Christ, which leaves them in a neutral area.
In contrast to this, Dante enters circles 2 - 9 and discovers more severe sins and their matching punishments. The outer ring of the Seventh Circle shows distinct differences between sinners that have commited violence. The punishment for violence is submersion in a river of boiling blood - symbolic for spilled blood - but highly violent tyrants are completely submerged, whereas those that commited less violence only sit ot stand in the boiling river.
I know i shouldn't be giving the answer to all you but the way they assigned the test to me was horrible so this is my own way of payback at them.
Here's my answer I will accept any critizizm if anything about my awnser is wrong.
Dante created contrapasso to use it in the divine comedy. The meaning behind contrapasso is suffering the opposite which means for whatever sin you have committed you shall receive the punishment that will be the opposite of whatever you did. For example, when Dante travels to hell and sees the seven circles, he sees each circle and their punishment the first circle deserved no punishment and only housed people who either did nothing wrong or babies who weren't baptized. These people were housed in this first circle were not punished for they did nothing wrong. Then we move onto the second circle were Dante is represented the sin lust were people who were here lusted for someone or denied their marriage etc. People who were here were violently swept back and forth by a very violent wind not allowing anyone caught in this wind to ever find peace or rest for eternity. Another example of the use of contrapasso is when Dante and Virgil go to the third circle of hell where they meet a worm monster named Cerberus, this name probably comes from the other mythology of a three-headed dog that guarded the gates of hell. However, people who were put in this third circle of hell sinned gluttony. People residing here were forced to lie in a horrible slush created by a horrid icy rain. This all symbolized degradation to the people who overindulged themselves with food or money. People here were never allowed to feel for themselves.

“The best lack all conviction, while the worst / Are full of passionate intensity” (lines 7–8) of the poem “The Second Coming” is a criticism of people who —
a.
remain neutral in times of crisis
c.
feel things too passionately
b.
have good intentions but no passion
d.
know how to get what they want
"The correct answer is b. feel things too passionately. Option b captures this interpretation by highlighting the negative consequences of feeling things too passionately without the temperance of reason or reflection.
These lines from W.B. Yeats' poem The Second Coming suggest that those who are the best are lacking in conviction, meaning they may be indecisive or unsure of their beliefs. In contrast, the worst are described as being full of passionate intensity, which implies that they feel things too strongly and are perhaps too emotionally driven. This passionate intensity can lead to fanaticism and a dangerous certainty in their own beliefs, which is what Yeats is critiquing. The poem reflects on the chaotic state of the world and the potential for a new era, and these lines in particular comment on the nature of people during such tumultuous times. Option b captures this interpretation by highlighting the negative consequences of feeling things too passionately without the temperance of reason or reflection."

Correct the tense inconsistency by writing the correct form of the verb in the space below.
Mia is early for band practice, so she warms up before anyone else
Final answer:
The sentence 'Mia is early for band practice, so she warms up before anyone else' is already correct because both 'is' and 'warms up' are in the present tense, maintaining consistent verb tense within the sentence. It's important to practice tense consistency and subject-verb agreement for grammatical accuracy.
Explanation:
To correct the tense inconsistency in the sentence, the correct form of the verb should be used throughout. In the sentence 'Mia is early for band practice, so she warms up before anyone else', we have a present tense construction with 'is early' and 'warms up'. Since there is no indication of a shift in time, and the sentence starts with a present tense verb 'is', the verb 'warms up' is already correctly in the present tense to maintain consistency.
When dealing with verb tense consistency, it's important to ensure that verbs are in the same tense unless a time shift within the text is intended. In examples where actions are taking place at different times, deliberately varied tenses are used to indicate this. However, for simple events that occur at the same time, maintaining the same tense throughout the sentence or passage is necessary.
Practicing with subject-verb agreement is also critical when aiming for grammatical precision. It often depends on whether the subject is singular or plural, and if the subject is a collective noun. For instance, 'The band rehearses every Thursday' uses a singular verb to indicate that the band, as a unit, rehearses together.

which sentence correctly uses parallel structure select each correct answer more than one answer may be correct
Answer:
1. When things go wrong, Carl tends to brood for hours and to blame others.
3. The school was closed not only because of the snow and ice but also because of the lack of heat
4. The ice was a greater problem for the electrical power company than for the natural gas company.
Explanation:
Parallel structure refers to sentences constructions that have two or more words, phrases or clauses that are grammatically similar or identical in their structure. It is often used to show that the ideas with the same grammatical form (or structure) are equally important, to give a natural flow to the reading and to make it easier to process.
Sentence 1: When things go wrong, Carl tends to brood for hours and to blame others uses parallel structure because it uses the infinitive verb twice: to brood and to blame.
Sentence 3: The school was closed not only because of the snow and ice but also because of the lack of heat is also correct because it has two phrases with the same grammatical form: because of the snow and ice and because of the lack of heat.
Lastly, in the sentence 4: The ice was a greater problem for the electrical power company than for the natural gas company, the phrases the electrical power company and the natural gas company use parallel structure too.
Why is this story told from Feld's point of view?
A. to delay his realization
B. to emphasize his epiphany
C. to show the inner feelings of Sobel
D. to allow Feld to express his infatuation
The most appropriate answer is B. This story is told from Feld's point of view to emphasize his epiphany, an experience of sudden realization. Fred is the lead character or protagonist. That’s why the story is told from his perspective. He does not tell his own story but we are given a continuous insight into his thoughts, and we see events and other characters from his perspective. In order to relate better about Feld’s epiphany towards the end, his limited POV narration was used.
In Rilke’s “The Swan,” the water that the swan enters is a symbol for _____. beauty death heaven man
Answer:
Heaven.
Explanation:
Rainer Maria Rilke's poem "The Swan" is just a simple twelve lined poem, with three lines each in the first two paragraphs and the rest six lines in the last paragraph. This poem deals mainly with the theme of death and the release of life after one dies.
The poet compares the very act of the swan waddling into the water as a sign of a person slowly walking into the hands of death and the release of his life responsibilities and tortures. Death is taken as a release from all forms of living, and the pain and responsibilities all lifted away from him. By the imagery of the swan entering into the water gracefully, we too shall go to heaven, leaving "waves" as a swan leaves ripples on the surface of the water.
