Compare and contrast Red Red Rose by Robert Browning with Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Be sure to focus on each work’s structure and each writer’s use of poetic elements, as well as the language, imagery, and themes of both works.

Answers

Answer 1

First of all Red Red Rose is written by Burns not Browning and the difference as regards structure between Red Red Rose and Sonnet 43 is that the first one is a ballad with four four-line stanzas following an ABBA rhyme and the second one is a sonnet which has a specific structure and metric. The sonnet has 2 four-line stanzas and 2 three-line stanzas making a total of 14 lines, and the rhyme in the sonnet is as follows: the first 8 lines is ABBA, and then lines 9 to 14 are CD CD CD.

In Red Red Rose we can observe the use of repetitions, similes and metaphors to express the concept of love and emotions and the depth of his "luve" towards the woman of his affection. Spelling "luve" with an u instead of an o which is not modern gives the idea of a historical era.

In Sonnet 43 we can observe that the dominant figures of speech are Anaphora and alliteration, both of them are use to build rhythm and reinforce the theme which is an intense love for his husband to be.

New Technology Leads to Bigger Cities In the 1800s, the United States was still a very young nation, trying to solidify its identity. The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain, a fast development of society following the introduction of machines. The United States was slower than Great Britain to fully embrace the changes. Yet key technological developments caused a rapid growth in American urban areas. Better farming methods and tools in the 1800s increased food production. Americans were able to grow enough food for their families as well as to sell. The abundance caused food prices to fall. The expansion of cotton and the growth of textile factories in northern states helped produce the first wave of American industry. More people turned to work in northern factories as a way to support their families. Thousands of immigrants to the United States also settled in or near port cities, looking for work. Even today, the need for work is a common reason people move to urban areas. As a result, cities grew in numbers of people and physical space. As more people and businesses moved in, they needed buildings for living and working. They needed ways to move around the city. We call this process urbanization. In 1820, the United States had only a few cities of 10,000 residents or more. About seven percent of U.S. residents lived in urban areas. The number of cities with more than 10,000 people grew quickly over the next 40 years, especially in the Northeast and Midwest. By 1860, about 20 percent lived in cities. Philadelphia and New York City were the most populated cities in 1860 and would soon reach one million residents. The urbanization of the United States quickened due to technology improvements. Without innovations in food production, the factories could not have grown so quickly. The trend quickened after 1860 and continued throughout the 21st century as well. By 2007, more Americans lived in or near cities than they did in rural areas.
Select a sentence from the body of this article that can be removed without affecting the author's explanation. Place the sentence in quotes and explain why it is an unnecessary detail.

Answers

Answer: "Without innovations in food production, the factories could not have grown so quickly."

This sentence is placed in the text as an example of how urbanization increased thanks to technological improvements. However, no other part of the text discusses food production. Also, the author does not explain how it is that food production contributed to the development of factories. Because it is only loosely related to the topic and it adds so few details, it is a superfluous sentence. It is possible to remove it without significantly affecting the rest of the text.

Arguing with Aristotle Email
The other night, we received this rather unexpected e-mail from our 14 year old son, reprinted here with his permission:
Subject: Sorry to send this to you in an e-mail…
I know re-registration for school is coming up, and I’m also aware how happy both you and Mommy are with me being there. The thing is, I have such amazing friends at the local public high school that (even though I may not show it all the time), I miss them so incredibly much, and I think about them every day wishing we had never split up. With such a perfect opportunity to continue our friendships together, it seems SO STUPID to me that we’re at different schools, when we could have all stayed together.
Every day that I’m sitting in class and I go off into a daydream, I think of all the fun we could be having together, all the times we’re missing, just so that I can be at a private school with a good reputation. The truth is, the local public high school offers just as good Honors classes, it just has a worse reputation because of some of the kids that go there. Sure I’ve made new friends here, but I’ve been hanging out with them every day when I could be hanging out with my best friends every single day.
I know you probably won’t believe me on this, but I decided to go here on a sort of an impulse, and because of the excitement of getting accepted in to such a well-spoken of school. I’ve been regretting that decision just about every day since the first day of school. I sort of feel like my friends’ and my relationships are splitting apart, just because of differences between schedules.
Also, don’t think that sending me to a private school is going to keep me out of drugs.  I mean let’s be serious: high schools will have ample amounts of drugs no matter where I go, and I’m tired of all the racism, popularity contests, and disputes over who has more money. Apparently where I go to school it’s cool to do drugs, put down others for not doing so, and so on and so forth. I’ve already found out that there’s no such thing as a perfect school, and whether it be a private or public school is just based on which families have more money.
Now, don’t think I believe that none of this won’t happen anywhere else, because I’m not stupid. It just seems crazy for me not to go to a school with people I’ve known for so long, because these last four years are my last ones before we all split up for good.
I know there are grammatical errors in here, it might not flow very well, and I probably jumped around quite a lot, but I just want to say that this came from the heart, and I mean everything I said. Please just talk to each other about this. Sorry that I sent it in an e-mail rather than in person, but I just thought I could say what I wanted on here without being interrupted.

Identifying the uses of ethos, logos, and pathos in text, like a hypothetical email from a student discussing a school change, can illuminate the writer's strategies for persuasion. These rhetorical appeals, conceived by Aristotle, are essential tools in effective communication and argumentation.

The student's request to change font colors according to the uses of ethos, logos, and pathos, as well as instances where all three appeals are used together (triple appeal), provides a practical exercise in understanding Aristotle's rhetorical appeals. Ethos (trustworthiness or credibility) can be recognized in elements where the speaker establishes their sincerity or authority on the subject, logos (logical appeal) involves the use of factual data and logical reasoning, and pathos (emotional appeal) is identified in attempts to evoke an emotional response from the target audience. Knowing when and how these appeals are employed enhances critical reading and writing skills, offering insights into the strategies used by writers to persuade their audience.

For example, in a hypothetical email from a student wanting to change schools, one might find ethos exemplified in statements that demonstrate the student's understanding or personal connection to the subject, logos in references to specific benefits of the new school, and pathos in expressions of feelings about missing friends or the social atmosphere at the public school. A statement that combines all three appeals would perhaps discuss the student's rational decision-making process, their emotional desire to be with friends, and the credibility of their experiences with both schools.

In the Odyssey, gods such as Jove, Minerva, and Neptune get involved in the mortals’ affairs. What do you think it would be like if gods really intervened in human affairs as they do in the Odyssey? Do you think life would change for the better or for the worse? Explain your stance and use examples from the Odyssey that support your response.

Answers

I think that the interference of gods in human life would be good if they use their experience to improve our existence, to stop certain things from happening, to help mortals.

This is what Athena tries to do for Oddyseus and his family. She disguises as a friend of Laertes, Odysseus' father. She then meets Telemachus and she advises him to meet with his mother's suitors.

Athena also connects him to kings Nestor and Menelaus so the prince can know his father, Odysseus, is actually alive.

Further evidence of positive interference is Zeus sending Hermes to convince Calypso to set Odysseus free.

On the contrary, when Poseidon, god of the sea, finds Odysseus escaping on a ship he causes a storm to sink it. He decides to do this because of revenge since Oddyseus had blinded his son on a previous adventure.

To summarize, I believe gods interference should be allowed only when it can be helpful when it can raise the quality of life.

Your answer should include the following points:

A discussion of what you think about gods getting involved in your daily activities.

Some instances where gods intervening in your life would really be helpful. For instance, it would be helpful if Neptune (the god of the sea) would contain the damage and destruction caused by floods, cyclones, and tornados.

Your thoughts on whether the gods’ involvement would always be beneficial and constructive. For example, Minerva’s constant support of Ulysses helps him stay alive on his journey and arrive home safely. Having supernatural support could be pretty great.

An explanation of why you believe the gods' involvement in human affairs would make life worse. For example, in the Odyssey, Neptune’s interference proved to be fatal for the Phaeacians. So if gods played favorites with humans, it could be disastrous for some people.

This is from Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer. You need a sentence and a half to fulfill the conditions of what you are asked.

The sentence beginning "Injun Joe infested all his dreams ..." The his refers to Tom. Unfortunately, that does not include Huck, so you have to go  another 1/2 sentence to get how Huck responded to Injun Joe (same way). Whoever made the question was a little bit sloppy in what they wanted. If it was just Tom, you could do it in one sentence. But to get both boys into the thought you need a 1/2 more sentence which begins

Poor Huck was in the same state of wretchedness and horror.

This is a case where you have notes, I would assume. The last one is certainly part of any persuasive argument. You have to know both sides in order to defend one successfully. So one of the answers is E.

That makes A incorrect. You have to choose one side of the topic, but you cannot be blind to the other side. You must somehow be able to mention and quickly counter the other side. That takes a lot of study.

Popularity has nothing to do with what to choose. The may want to take "the road less traveled." So B is incorrect. You have to go with what you believe, unless you are writing a speech for someone who has his own point of view.

C is pragmatic. You might do that if you have no feelings one way or the other about the topic. You have to look this up.

D has the same answer as C. It depends. If you are going to a Christian School abortion is going to be very hard to defend. Should you try? And you have to look at your notes that came with this question.

An infinitive is a verb form. It is usually a noun but not always. It is easily identified but can be a little harder to state what it does in the sentence.

Identification: There is only one sentence that has an infinitive in it and that is the fourth one down. "To win ... [her approval and trust]."

Function: It is not a noun. To win is not the same thing as goal. The verb used in the 4th one down is was which is a linking verb. If there is a noun used after it, then (in this case) it must be the same as goal.

It is not an adverb. To win would have to make was clearer which it does not. To win tells us nothing about the nature of was.

It is an adjective. The adjective modifies goal. The goal is a winning goal. The objective is to win the teacher's approval. The proper term for such an adjective is a predicate adjective.

Read the text, then answer the question that follows: Wild animals as viewed from a mountain camp—Camille Grant, October 2011 Through my binoculars, I viewed a group of wild animals in action. A pride of lions was sleeping when a small, yellow bus pulled up beside them. Tourists on a safari were packed into the bus like sardines in a can. Armed with cameras, they invaded the lions' territory, hoping to capture the perfect photograph. The crowd leaned out the windows, hooting and hollering, until the lions awoke. When the lions moved away, the bus rolled after them, relentlessly stalking the pride. One of the lions turned and roared to protect the young. This was greeted with cheers and a celebratory honk of the bus horn. The curious visitors observed the lions' routine for an hour before moving on. Answers

Final answer:

The sentence 'The class graduates in June.' uses the simple future tense, indicated by the expectation of the action to happen in the future.

Explanation:

The sentence 'The class graduates in June.' is in the simple future tense. This is determined by the use of the modal 'will' implied before the verb 'graduates' to indicate an action that has not yet happened but is expected to happen in the future. In sentences where the future action is indicated by a time frame instead of the explicit use of 'will' or 'shall,' it still conforms to the simple future tense usage.

What is atmosphere in literature?

1 the attitude of a text toward the subject and theme
2 the emotional response a text generates from a reader
3 the author’s opinion of the subject and the audience
4 the narrator’s perspective in relation to the characters

Answers

The answer is 2 the emotional response a text generates from a reader.

The correct answer is Option 2, the emotional response a text generates from a reader, accurately defines atmosphere in literature. It highlights the impact the text has on the reader, evoking specific emotions and creating a particular mood.

Atmosphere in literature refers to the emotional response a text generates from a reader. It encompasses the overall mood, tone, and ambiance created within a literary work.

While the other options touch on different aspects of literary analysis, they do not fully capture the essence of atmosphere as the emotional or psychological response elicited in the reader. The attitude of a text toward the subject and theme (option 1), the author's opinion of the subject and the audience (option 3), and the narrator's perspective in relation to the characters (option 4) are important elements, but they do not encompass the broader concept of atmosphere.

In literature, atmosphere is crafted through various literary devices such as descriptive language, imagery, setting, and tone. It sets the overall mood and influences the reader's interpretation and experience of the text. By creating a specific atmosphere, authors can immerse readers in the world of the story, evoke emotions, and enhance the overall meaning and impact of the narrative.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option 2, the emotional response a text generates from a reader, accurately defines atmosphere in literature. It highlights the impact the text has on the reader, evoking specific emotions and creating a particular mood.

Answers

Answer:b the narrator

Explanation:

Final answer:

In poetry, the term 'speaker' refers to the narrator of a poem, which is the voice or perspective that tells the poem. The speaker should not be confused with the poet themselves, as it is often a created persona within the poem.

Explanation:

In poetry, the term speaker refers to the narrator of a poem; it is the voice or perspective through which a poem is told. This is analogous to a narrator in prose, but it should not be confused with the poet themselves. Often, the speaker in a poem is a created character and may not represent the poet's personal voice or opinions. For example, the speaker in "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson is presumably a townsperson who observes Richard Cory from afar, rather than the poet expressing his own views.

The concept of the speaker is central to understanding poetry, as it requires the reader to listen and engage with the poem as if the words were spoken directly to them. This interaction relies on the poem’s use of rhythm, pauses, stresses, and inflections to create an emotional experience for the reader. It is also essential to differentiate between the poet, who authors the poem, and the speaker, who is the voice crafted by the poet to communicate within the poem.

Global warming is a direct cause of pollution, which is a cause of severe concern among modern nations. Global warming is the increase of the Earth’s average temperature, which might seem to not be a lot, but it has some serious consequences when it comes to having changes in climate patterns, which affects the environment all around the world.

Further Explanation:

The causes of global warming are several but have been typically accelerated by the constant increase of greenhouse gas emissions, triggered by industrial use and human activities. Environmental scientists have been monitoring the course of climate change patterns, and have also recorded some highly unlikely changes in weather patterns over the last decades. Global warming has now become a problem of international attention, prompting governments all around the world to rise to the occasion and take necessary measures to cut down greenhouse gas emissions.

One of the direct repercussions of global warming is that the increase of earth’s temperatures causes it to heat and subsequently melt ice at the polar ice caps. The molten freshwater increases the sea level, which is a serious danger to the existence of coastal and island nations and cities. The constant rising sea levels are predicted to be the end of certain nations such as Seychelles, Tuvalu, the Caribbean and Florida. The constant warming of sea and ocean temperatures affect the flow of air and ocean currents, which form the basis of sustaining life in several regions. Due to changing wind and monsoon patterns, agricultural production gets affected, resulting in crop failures, droughts and famines. The warm ocean temperatures can prove fatal to several sea creatures who do not have a quick adaptive body to such rapidly changing surroundings, leading entire species to die out and face mass extinction.

Answers

Answer: N. When Europeans arrived in 1492, there were very large Indian populations scattered all across America with a rich history and culture, an element that vastly defers the logic of the discovery of a "new world".
