Read the following passage and answer the question that follows: from Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (1)One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked. (2)"What's happened to me?" he thought. It wasn't a dream. His room, a proper human room although a little too small, lay peacefully between its four familiar walls. A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table -Samsa was a travelling salesman - and above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer. (3)Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad. "How about if I sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense", he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on his right, and in his present state couldn't get into that position. However hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was. He must have tried it a hundred times, shut his eyes so that he wouldn't have to look at the floundering legs, and only stopped when he began to feel a mild, dull pain there that he had never felt before. 2) noun: Individuals who are comparable on some given metric. For example: My peers and I met to discuss issues which impacted our lives.

Peer's refers to something belonging to a single peer (definition two above).
For example: I thought that my peer's sweater looked very nice on him.

Peers' refers to something belonging to a group of peers (definition two above). For example: As a group, my peers' achievements are very impressive!

So for your sentence on taking advice, I would assume that you would want

Create an analogy of your own. Then, write a few sentences to explain the type of comparison you used and how the words relate to one another.

Answers

Answer:

Sample Response:

car : drive  ::  plane : fly

This analogy compares using function. “Drive” is matched with the word “car” because that is the function of a car. The function of a plane is to fly.

The above question wants to assess your writing and reasoning ability. As this is something very personal I cannot write an analogy for you, but I will show you how to write one.

First, you must know that an analogy is a comparison between two different elements. In this comparison, a similarity relationship is established between the two elements, where the meaning of one is transferred to the other.

In this case, to write an analogy you must:

Choose two elements that are different from each other. These elements must allow an association to be made between them. This association must be made subjunctive, that is, non-literal.

An example of an analogy can be seen in the sentence:

"The captain is the head and the soldiers the arms."

In this sentence, we see that the element "head" is being compared to the element "captain," while the element "soldiers," is being compared to the element "arms".

Each pair of elements has no relationship, however, these relationships were made to show that as the head is the part of the body responsible for determining what the arms will do, the captain of an army is responsible for showing what the soldiers will do.

Which situation is an example of an external conflict?

A. A man feels lonely when his company sends him to a new office.
B. A teenager tries to get her high school to rehire a favorite teacher.
C. A young boy tries to decide if he wants to play football or the piano.
D. A woman struggles to regain her self-confidence after a divorce.

Answers

In the context of the given scenarios, the situation that represents an external conflict is B, the teenager trying to get her high school to rehire a favorite teacher, as it involves a struggle between the individual and an external system.

The question at hand is which situation exemplifies an external conflict. External conflict refers to a struggle between a character and an outside force, which could be another character, society, nature, or any element outside of the character's own psyche. Internal conflicts, on the other hand, are psychological battles a character faces within themselves, such as emotional turmoil or difficult personal decisions.

From the options provided, A and D depict internal conflicts, where characters are dealing with emotional issues. For instance, feeling lonely or struggling with self-confidence are internal struggles. Option C also illustrates an internal conflict, where a boy is trying to decide which hobby to pursue. However, option B showcases an external conflict where a teenager is actively engaging in an attempt to make a change in her external environment - the school system - by trying to get a favored teacher rehired. This is clearly a conflict with an outside entity.

An example of an external conflict is Option B, where a teenager attempts to get her high school to rehire a favorite teacher, representing a struggle with an external entity.

In literature and storytelling, a conflict is a fundamental element that creates tension and drives the narrative forward. There are two main types of conflict: internal conflict and external conflict. Internal conflict occurs within a character, typically involving emotional struggles or decisions they must make that impact their personal development. External conflict, on the other hand, includes struggles between a character and an outside force, which could be another character, society, or nature.

Considering the options provided, Option B, where a teenager tries to get her high school to rehire a favorite teacher, is an example of an external conflict. This scenario depicts a struggle between a character (the teenager) and an external entity (the school), making it fit the definition of external conflict.

In contrast, Options A (loneliness from a company transfer), C (deciding between playing football or the piano), and D (regaining self-confidence after a divorce) are all examples of internal conflicts because they involve personal, internal struggles within the characters rather than clashes with external forces.

What kind of figurative language is "oh mirror in the sky"?

i believe it is a metaphor. it compares 2 unlike things and it describes an action that isn’t literal.

"Oh, mirror in the sky" is symbolic. It contrasts two dissimilar objects and depicts a nonliteral activity. It is a Metaphor.

What is a Sky?

From the Earth's surface, there is an unhindered view of the sky. Both the atmosphere and outer space are included. It may also be thought of as a region that is between Earth and space but is separate from the latter. The sky is often referred to as the celestial sphere in the study of astronomy.

The term "sky" is derived from the Old Norse word "sky," which means "cloud, God's habitation." Old English SCO, which has the same Indo-European root as the ancient Latin obscures, meaning "obscure," is also derived from the Norse word.

The visible region above the earth was referred to be heaven in Old English. Middle English references eventually limited it to its modern, religious connotation.

Mr. Turner in this excerpt is saying that his wife does whatever she wants, and he doesn't have much control over where she goes or how she spends her time. He makes it clear that the children used to be able to hold her attention, but even they don't keep her coming around as much.

Answer:

The Answer is C. Lack of control over his wife.

Explanation:

Read the excerpts from part 3 of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge."

A rising sheet of water curved over him, fell down upon him, blinded him, strangled him! The cannon had taken a hand in the game. As he shook his head free from the commotion of the smitten water he heard the deflected shot humming through the air ahead, and in an instant it was cracking and smashing the branches in the forest beyond.
***
A whiz and rattle of grapeshot among the branches high above his head roused him from his dream. The baffled cannoneer had fired him a random farewell. He sprang to his feet, rushed up the sloping bank, and plunged into the forest.
***
As he is about to clasp her he feels a stunning blow upon the back of the neck; a blinding white light blazes all about him with a sound like the shock of a cannon—then all is darkness and silence!

What function does the motif of the cannon serve throughout the story?

A). The cannon continually pushes Farquhar to continue his journey through his dream and back to reality.
B). The cannon encourages Farquhar to investigate whether his escape was a dream or reality.
C). The cannon reminds Farquhar that time is subjective and encourages him to move quickly in order to reach his home.
D). The cannon represents Farquhar’s romantic dream that he escaped his execution and will return home.

Answers

The best answer here is A. Throughout the story, Farquhar is chased by the sound of the cannon, which serves as a reminder of the real world. This is to pull him back to reality as he finally reaches his death.

While the other answers are good and apply, they aren't the best answers. Choice B works well as Farquhar does wonder if he actually escaped, however A makes more sense because Farquhar is constantly pushing forward on his journey.

While choice C makes sense, there isn't any sort of rhythm, rhyme, or reason to how the canon goes off in the story.

Choice D makes no sense at all in the context of the story. While Farquhar wants to make it home, it doesn't make much sense that the canon would represent his journey home.

Throughout "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," the motif of the cannon serves is that The cannon encourages Farquhar to investigate whether his escape was a dream or reality. Correct answer is Option B.

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," the motif of the cannon serves to jolt Farquhar out of his dream-like state and prompt him to question the reality of his situation. The story is structured in a way that initially presents Farquhar's escape as a seemingly successful and fantastical event, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. However, the intermittent references to the cannon, its shots, and the physical sensations Farquhar experiences in response to it, serve as reminders of his impending execution and the harsh reality of the Civil War. The cannon's role is particularly significant in the moments leading up to Farquhar's supposed escape. It is when he believes he has reached his home and is about to embrace his wife that the cannon's shot and its subsequent effects occur. This abrupt interruption forces Farquhar to question whether his escape was a dream or if he has truly achieved freedom. In essence, the cannon serves as a narrative device that blurs the line between Farquhar's dreams and reality, creating a sense of ambiguity and disorientation. It keeps the reader and Farquhar himself in a state of uncertainty, emphasizing the psychological and emotional turmoil he experiences as he grapples with the possibility that his escape is nothing more than a fleeting illusion.

The definition of ambiguity is the quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness. The characters having complex morals wouldn't make them be exactly bad or exactly good it makes them a mix of both...I'm terrible at explaining things but I hope this helps!

Answer: depict the moral complexities of characters.

One of the most striking characteristics of Boccaccio's tales is the fact that they deal with moral issues that were taboo at the time in a rich and complex manner. The characters of the stories are, for the most part, common people. However, they encounter big dilemmas that show their moral complexity. Boccaccio deals with this by being purposefully ambiguous when discussing moral matters. This ambiguity not only highlights the complexity and difficulty of the moral questions he presents, but also forces the reader to come to his own conclusions to these questions.

What do you think the author is saying through the development of these characters? In your response, describe the primary features of the characters at the beginning of the novel, the basic process by which they change, and their characteristics at the end of the novel. Then, explain what you think the author is trying to say through the changes in Elizabeth and Darcy.

Answers

At the beginning of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy is presented as being proud (and arrogant) while Elizabeth Bennett is decidedly prejudice (she is depicted as being quick to judge others).  Furthermore, Darcy is also presented as being prejudiced against people of lower social standing than himself while Elizabeth demonstrates a remarkable measure of personal pride.  Over the course of the novel, both Darcy and Elizabeth begin to fall in love with each other and, in turn, realize their own character faults.  As she learns about Darcy and his life, she realizes that she is overly judging of others. Darcy, on the other hand, realizes - especially when Elizabeth turns down his initial marital proposal - that he is overly and unreasonably proud and arrogant.  Through her depiction of the changes that Elizabeth and Darcy go through, Austen is demonstrating the manner in which love between a couple can shift their understandings of the world and, moreover, themselves.

Credit from:

holesstanham

Final answer:

Elizabeth and Darcy change and grow throughout the novel, becoming more understanding and accepting of each other's flaws. The author emphasizes personal growth and self-reflection as important themes.

Explanation:

Elizabeth and Darcy undergo significant changes throughout Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. At the beginning of the novel, Elizabeth is quick to judge Darcy based on her first impressions, while Darcy is prideful and reserved. However, through their interactions and personal growth, they both evolve and become more understanding and accepting of each other's flaws.

Elizabeth starts to realize her own prejudice and learns to be more open-minded. She acknowledges her own faults and becomes more humble and forgiving. Darcy, on the other hand, recognizes his own pride and arrogance and learns to be more considerate and less judgmental. He becomes more aware of his actions and their impact on others.

Through these changes, Austen emphasizes the themes of personal growth, self-reflection, and the importance of seeing beyond initial appearances. The author showcases that true love and understanding can only be achieved through self-awareness and the ability to overcome one's own shortcomings.

This story lacks a resolution because we don't actually know the outcome.

Answer: He doesn't tell us.

Explanation: In his final reflection, the author states some important information about how the princess would have make her decision. Being jealous of the maiden, and knowing that the young man was her true love, would she be capable of watching the love of her life end up with anybody but herself? On the other hand, would she choose to see her lover die right in front of her, only because she couldn't stand the thought of not having him for herself anymore? The final question was: even knowing her very well, did the lover follow her instructions because he knew something good was waiting for him, or he did it because he knew her savage personality and knew she would rather have him dead?

With all these questions made, the author leaves the ending for the readers' imagination, not telling what comes for the young man when he opens the door.
