Read the passage. Transportation Strike Disrupts Westridge Thousands unable to get to work or school WESTRIDGE, Ohio — More than 600 transportation employees went on strike at midnight last night after their demand for a 10% pay increase was rejected by local government officials. The strike affects all bus and rail services throughout Westridge and the neighboring communities of Turlock, Smithfield, and Lowell Grove. “We hoped we would not be forced to strike, but until our demands are met, we really have no choice,” said Wanda Thompson, a representative of the Transportation Employees Union. “We simply don’t get paid what we deserve.” Members of the Westridge City Council see the situation differently. “Our employees already earn 6% more than the state average for similar transportation jobs,” said Raoul Cobian, President of the Westridge City Council. Hopefully the two groups can come to an agreement soon and bring this unnecessary strike to an end. Which statement about the underlined sentence is true? It is a sidebar that provides additional information about the story. It is a fact that answers the question where. It is an opinion that reflects the journalist’s bias regarding the transportation strike. It is the body of the article that provides a detailed account of the story.

I suppose the last sentence ("Hopefully...") is underlined. In my opinion, the correct answer is C. It is an opinion that reflects the journalist’s bias regarding the transportation strike. The journalist is not being neutral in this sentence. He/she judges that the strike is unnecessary, which is definitely bias - the transportation workers definitely don't think it is unnecessary, and with this sentence, the journalist takes a side, which is not allowed in good journalism.

I suppose the last sentence ("Hopefully...") is underlined. In my opinion, the correct answer is C. It is an opinion that reflects the journalist’s bias regarding the transportation strike. T

How often should a resumé be updated?

I. once a year

II. anytime something changes

III. with each new job

I only
II only
III only
I and III

Answers

A résumé should be updated whenever there are significant changes, annually, and with each new job. The length should be one to two pages, tailored to your work history. Consistency in personal branding across all materials is crucial.

Updating Your Résumé

A résumé should be updated anytime something significant changes, which may include when you learn a new skill, complete a noteworthy project, or gain a new certification. Furthermore, revising it annually is a good practice to ensure any recent professional development or changes are reflected. Additionally, it should certainly be updated with each new job to keep your career narrative current. Therefore, the correct answer to the question of how often a résumé should be updated is II only, anytime something changes.

Résumé Length

The length of a résumé is typically no longer than one to two pages, depending on your level of experience. For those with extensive work history, justifying a longer résumé is acceptable, but it is recommended to prune weaker material instead of adding filler. Ensure that the content portrays the 'highlight reel' of your experience, focusing on action verbs and task descriptors.

Consistency in Personal Branding

When applying for a position, maintain consistency across all your professional branding materials, including your résumé, cover letter, business cards, and follow-up correspondences. This helps create a cohesive and professional impression and ensures that all materials 'belong' to the same personal brand.

Reading comprehension depends upon a solid understanding of A. loaded language. B. introductions. C. key details. D. objectivity

Answers

I believe the answer would be A.loaded language

Reading comprehension primarily depends on understanding key details in the text. These details support the main idea and help clarify the author's message.

Reading comprehension is an essential skill in English, and it primarily depends on understanding key details. These details are the pieces of information in the text that support the main idea and help clarify the author's message. For example, when reading a story, paying attention to details about the characters, setting, and plot can help you better comprehend and analyze the text.

In order to comprehend why this is the best option and the others are not, let's examine each one individually:

A. loaded language

Incorrect: While understanding loaded language (emotionally charged or biased language) can help in interpreting the tone and intent of a text, it is not fundamental to the overall process of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension primarily involves grasping the main ideas and details of the text.

B. introductions

Incorrect: Understanding introductions can help set the context for a text, but it is just one part of the text. Comprehension involves understanding the entire text, not just its beginning.

C. key details

Correct: Key details are crucial for reading comprehension. They include important facts, examples, and explanations that support the main ideas of the text. Understanding these details allows readers to fully grasp the content and meaning of the text.

D. objectivity

Incorrect: Objectivity refers to the ability to perceive or describe something without being influenced by personal emotions or biases. While objectivity can be important in certain types of reading and analysis, it is not a fundamental component of reading comprehension, which focuses more on understanding and interpreting the text itself.

Therefore, understanding key details is essential for reading comprehension because these details help readers grasp the main ideas and overall message of the text.

Read this passage from a body paragraph in an explanatory essay:

The major difference between in Dante the writer and Dante the character is that the character is more innocent and unassuming. In Canto XXVI of the inferno, Virgil scolds Dante for sitting down and resting after the two have just climbed up the side of a bridge

Which statement provides the most accurate evaluation of the passage?

A.The passage has no evidence
B.The evidence does not support the claim
C.The claim is unclear
S.The style is informal and inconsistent

Answers

B. the evidence does not support the claim.

B. The evidence does not support the claim.

The passage states that the major difference between Dante the writer and Dante the character is that the character is more innocent and unassuming. However, the evidence provided, which discusses Virgil scolding Dante for resting after climbing a bridge in Canto XXVI of the Inferno, does not directly support this claim. Instead, it illustrates a specific action taken by Dante the character, but it does not clearly demonstrate his innocence or unassuming nature. Therefore, the evidence provided in the passage does not effectively support the claim made about the character of Dante. Consequently, option B, "The evidence does not support the claim," is the most accurate evaluation of the passage.

Mr. and Mrs. Farquar … asked the scientist to lunch. … Gideon … said grudgingly: “The Big Baas want to know what medicine I used?” He spoke incredulously, as if he could not believe his old friends could so betray him. Mr. Farquar began explaining how a useful medicine could be made out of the root, and how it could be put on sale, and how thousands of people … could be saved by the medicine. … [T]hey all realized he would never give in. The magical drug would remain where it was, unknown and useless except for the tiny scattering of Africans who had the knowledge … power and wisdom.

In “No Witchcraft for Sale” by Doris Lessing, how does Gideon’s cultural background affect his actions with the medicinal plant?

A. Gideon’s position as a leader in the native community requires him to be kind to the scientist.

B.Gideon’s position as Teddy’s caregiver leads him to give away the name of the medicinal root.

C. Gideon’s position as a tribal medicine man dictates that he not betray the secret to outsiders.

D. Gideon’s position as a servant to the family demands that he tell the Farquars what they want to know.

Answers

C. Gideon’s position as a tribal medicine man dictates that he not betray the secret to outsiders.

C. Gideon’s position as a tribal medicine man dictates that he not betray the secret to outsiders.

In the passage it states that "[T]hey all realized he would never give in." This best shows that Gideon will not reveal the medicine he used. This means that any answer which shows he did give away the medicine information is incorrect. Options C and D are eliminated. Option A can also be eliminated because it only encourages kindness to the scientist, it does not say anything about his actions with the medicinal plant.

Fleance's escape proves that luck is fickle -- easily won one day, easily lost the next. His escape also indicates that the witches' prophecy may not unfold exactly as Macbeth thinks. In short, Macbeth is not as lucky as he thinks (or hopes).

After reading the tragic play "Macbeth," by William Shakespeare, we can say that the escape of the character Fleance suggests the following about Macbeth's luck:

Fleance's escape suggests Macbeth's luck is about to change. So far, in order to make the prophecy come true and become a king, Macbeth has been committing crimes and achieving his purposes. However, as Fleance escapes the ambush Macbeth has planned, another prophecy is the one that will come true: the Banquo's descendants will be the ones taking the crown. Fleance is Banquo's son. Therefore, Fleance's escape proves that Macbeth's luck is uncertain. There is no guarantee that the prophecy about him will prevail. One's destiny can change at any point.

What happens in Macbeth?Macbeth and his friend Banquo meet three witches who deliver a few prophecies to them. One of those prophecies claims that Macbeth will become king. Another one, however, claims that Banquo's descendants are the one who will reign.Macbeth is an ambitious man, so he takes the prophecy seriously. He begins to murder those around him in order to take the crown. He is trying his best - and his worse - to make the prophecy come true.He plans to ambush his friend Banquo and his son Fleance to prevent the other prophecy from coming true. Review hamlets encounter with the gravedigger and his thoughts about yorick
at the beginning of act V. Why might Shakespeare have chosen to include this darkly humorous scene here

Answers

There are two particular reasons why Shakespeare might have chosen to include this darkly humorous scene in Hamlet.  First, Hamlet, by and large, is a dark and violent play with little in the way of humor (especially in the first three and final acts).  Shakespeare might've included the scene in order to provide some humor and levity for his audience in order to liven their spirits and retain their attention. In essence, this scene provides some measure of "comic relief" for the audience.  Shakespeare's second reason for including this scene might have been to make a particular point in connection to one of the play's main themes: human mortality.  In this scene, Hamlet comes to realize that death, ultimately, serves as something of a level playing field.  No matter who - or how insignificant or powerful - a person is in their life, he or she will die and return to the dust from which he or she came.

In Act V of Hamlet, Shakespeare includes a darkly humorous scene where Hamlet reflects on Yorick's skull to underscore the inevitability of death. This scene serves to highlight Hamlet's musings on life and mortality, preparing the audience for the tragic finale.

The protagonist of Shakespeare's Hamlet, in Act V, meets a gravedigger and thinks back on Yorick, the king's jester whose skull he finds. At this point, Hamlet delivers his well-known, reflective monologue, "Alas, poor Yorick!" Through these contemplations, Hamlet considers the impermanence of life and the certainty of death, remembering Yorick's humor and vigor in sharp contrast to the fact that he is dying.

Shakespeare likely included this darkly humorous scene to provide a poignant meditation on mortality. The use of humor in this context underscores the universality of death and allows the audience to confront this sobering theme with a degree of emotional relief. By handling such a heavy topic with levity, Shakespeare invites deeper contemplation on human existence and the inevitability of death without overwhelming the audience with despair.

This scene also serves as a narrative device to highlight Hamlet's evolving perspective on life and death, setting the stage for the play’s tragic conclusion. The conversation with the gravedigger and the remembrance of Yorick illustrates Hamlet's growing awareness of death's omnipresence, further fueling his existential musings and his resolve to face his own destiny.

People generally think those memoirs only worthy to be read or remembered which abound in great or striking events, those, in short, which in a high degree excite either admiration or pity: all others they consign to contempt and oblivion. Of these the most considerable is the kingdom of Benin, both as to extent and wealth, the richness and cultivation of the soil, the power of its king, and the number and warlike disposition of the inhabitants. It is situated nearly under the line, and extends along the coast about 170 miles, but runs back into the interior part of Africa to a distance hitherto I believe unexplored by any traveller; and seems only terminated at length by the empire of Abyssinia, near 1500 miles from its beginning. This kingdom is divided into many provinces or districts: in one of the most remote and fertile of which, called Eboe, I was born, in the year 1745, in a charming fruitful vale, named Essaka. The distance of this province from the capital of Benin and the sea coast must be very considerable; for I had never heard of white men or Europeans, nor of the sea: and our subjection to the king of Benin was little more than nominal; for every transaction of the government, as far as my slender observation extended, was conducted by the chiefs or elders of the place. The manners and government of a people who have little commerce with other countries are generally very simple; and the history of what passes in one family or village may serve as a specimen of a nation. My father was one of those elders or chiefs I have spoken of, and was styled Embrenche; a term, as I remember, importing the highest distinction, and signifying in our language a mark of grandeur. This mark is conferred on the person entitled to it, by cutting the skin across at the top of the forehead, and drawing it down to the eye-brows; and while it is in this situation applying a warm hand, and rubbing it until it shrinks up into a thick weal across the lower part of the forehead.
