In 2-3 sentences explain what Harding meant by a "return to normalcy"

Answers

President Harding's "return to normalcy" meant getting the United States back to conservative principles after World War I.

Harding's 1920 presidential campaign said that America needed "not heroics, but healing ... not revolution, but restoration ... not the dramatic, but the dispassionate."  Those are a few samples among several contrasts like that which he drew.  Another was that we needed "not nostrums, but normalcy."  A "nostrum" is a cure or medicine that someone promises will work but doesn't actually work.  The term is used also for political schemes and promises for bringing about social reform or political progress -- and Harding didn't much believe in such schemes.

Why did the 1939 cash-and-carry amendment to the Neutrality Acts favor Britain over Germany?

Answers

The 1939 cash-and-carry amendment to the Neutrality acts favored Britain over Germany because Britain had a larger fleet of ships to carry arms than Germany.

The Cash and Carry was a policy presented in 1939 that replaced the Neutrality Act of 1937. It aimed to sale war material to European countries as long as they could transport them in their ships and pay immediately in cash.

The policy favored Britain over Germany because Britain could meet the demands of the policy because the country had more ships to carry arms than Germany so they could buy more than them.

The great economic and social divisions between the North and South in the first half of the 1800s eventually led to the Civil War. During those prewar years, the North industrialized, urbanized, and became more reliant on wage labor. In contrast, the South remained a rural, agricultural society that focused on slavery to harvest cash crops like cotton and tobacco. Historians have often said that due to the huge differences between the two regions, the Civil War was inevitable. What do you think could have been done, if anything, to prevent the war? Also consider the issue of slavery, which became so central to the disagreements between the North and South. Could simple compromise or political debate between the two sides have eventually ended slavery without a war? Be sure to point to evidence from throughout this unit or that you have found on your own that supports your viewpoint.

Answers

To be frank, civil war is inevitable. Even a compromise or a debate could not prevent of such of happening.  During the election of that time between Abraham Lincoln and his rival Seward during the 1860 election and McClellan there are already debates at that time and speeches but it didn't prevent the civil war. Also in economic side if the South would give in to the North wants to abolished slavery it would downturn their business in a long run, a thing that a business should avoid at all cost.

for the battle of Antietam what is Lee's strategy in this battle??

Answers

Final answer:

General Robert E. Lee's strategy at the Battle of Antietam was to aggressively attack the Union forces despite being outnumbered, aiming at a decisive victory on Union soil. His attacks, especially on his left flank, showed a willingness to risk all of his forces rather than maintain a purely defensive posture, but the battle ultimately concluded without a clear victor.

Explanation:

Lee's Strategy at the Battle of Antietam

General Robert E. Lee's strategy during the Battle of Antietam was risky and aggressive, especially considering he was outnumbered by Union forces. On September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Lee took a defensive position along Antietam Creek but did not rely solely on defense. Despite being significantly outnumbered, with 45,000 Confederate soldiers to the Union's 87,000, Lee decided to launch aggressive counterattacks against the larger Union Army led by Major General George B. McClellan. One of the focal points of these attacks was on Lee's left flank, held by Stonewall Jackson, which faced intense artillery bombardment and fierce fighting, particularly in an area known as the Cornfield. In the end, while McClellan's cautious approach prevented a decisive Union victory, Lee was forced to retreat, making the battle tactically inconclusive but strategically a lost opportunity for the Confederacy to end the war on Union soil.

Some white southerners joined the Ku Klux Klan primarily as a powerful way to oppose the north, making option C the correct answer. The Klan was seen by many as an instrument to restore White supremacy and to overturn Republican state governments during the era of Radical Reconstruction. It aimed to prevent African Americans from asserting their citizenship rights through a campaign of intimidation and violence, often targeting public schools, Union League members, and Freedmen's Bureau workers. The Klan, along with other similar organizations, served to solidify the Democratic Party's power in the South, promoting a return to an antebellum social order where White dominance was unchallenged.

Based on Drew’s statements, why do you think New Yorkers decided to support the Civil War effort?

Answers

Final answer:

New Yorkers were swayed to support the Civil War effort due to a variety of reasons, including economic interests, political inclinations, and views on slavery and emancipation. Initial opposition to the Union cause was evident through riots and the fear of job competition with freed slaves. However, the Emancipation Proclamation and the enlistment of African American soldiers in the Union army played crucial roles in shifting support in favor of the Union.

Explanation:

Based on Drew's statements, it appears that a combination of economic, political, and racial factors influenced New Yorkers to support the Civil War effort. Initially, many New Yorkers, particularly within the business sector, supported the Confederacy due to economic interests. Additionally, in the early stages of the conflict, there was a notable resistance to the war due to unhappiness over the Union draft and the expressed fears of job competition, which would be aggravated by the emancipated slaves seeking employment. These sentiments deepened into riots and violence, especially against African Americans.

However, attitudes gradually changed as the war progressed. The Emancipation Proclamation, despite being seen as deeply offensive by some, helped generate support for the Union cause among abolitionists and others who opposed the institution of slavery. The continued Confederate resistance and actions to maintain slavery also swayed opinions. The enlistment of African American soldiers, viewed controversially by some, was a pivotal shift in the Union's military strategy that effectively personified the fight against slavery, potentially gaining more support for the Union cause among New Yorkers.

Write a paragraph explaining how the invention of the printing press and the circulation of early media forms shaped public opinion and influenced history.

Answers

Printing press was invented for the purpose of copying papers. It shaped the public by being able to spread the word; which is also how the circulation of early media forms began. Being able to spread the word was much easier, bibles were made and other religious texts were made/copied. It shaped history because now we have newspapers, books and magazines- which wouldn't have happened if the printing press and media forms.
Well, the first printing press was actually brought to America by my great great great grandpa (or something) in 1638, called the "Gutenberg" printing press invented by non-other than "Johannes Gutenberg" (how original).  It was then examined by inventors and modified over the years, at that time it was used to write books and newspapers, fun fact, the "Gutenberg" printing press was used to write the first ever printed bible. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century came the modifying, It did not change much in shape though, it did not get lighter, if anything it got heavier, but it was progress, the new modification turned the "Gutenberg" press into the same version, but in cast iron instead of wood, so same thing but heavier. Now, the real progress, lies with a man named "Earl Stanhope", in 1800 he invented the "Stanhope" press (common guys wheres the originality?) made completely out out of cast iron, it was the first book press. However the new press had a series of levers that gave the printer, or pressman quite a lot of extra power. In 1816 A man named "George Clymer" invented the first "Colombian Printing Press" (well, at least he didn't name it after himself, that's a little originality), This new press was also an iron hand press, although while the "Gutenberg" press could only print  about 100 and hour the "Colombian" Press could print 250 pages an hour. After about 200 years of work and modifying, the technology of the printing press has really grown. From the original, "Gutenberg" press, to the type writer to the computer, to the laptop, and finally to the touch screen phone, the history of the printing press is truly a fascinating one.
