In Canto V, when Dante the Pilgrim hears Francesca's story, he feels ______.

grief for her tragic life
admiration for her steadfast love
disgust toward her lustful actions
exasperation toward her reckless lover

Answers

Answer 1
The correct answer is A.

Dante feels grief for Francesca's tragic life. He even weeps with pity for her situation. Dante considers her sin different from the others, because she could not rationally control falling in love. Other sins, like murder, require the sinner to actively choose to sin. On the other hand, falling in love happens without our choosing. That's why Dante feels so bad.

Kites: Birds of Glory

As a rule, raptors, or birds of prey, are among the most admired and adored birds in the world. From the California condor to the snowy owl, few birds compare to the tigers of the air: the great hunters whose beauty and skill have inspired art and literature for centuries. The most glorious feathers of the peacock or the vibrant plumage of a bunting cannot compete with the power of a peregrine falcon or the determination of an osprey. Included in this group of hunters, however, is one bird of prey that is little known but equally impressive. The kites of the world are generally smaller than most raptors, but just as astonishing in skill and grace as any other hunter of the skies.

Most people think of paper or cloth structures flown with string from the ground when the word 'kite' is used. In addition to these popular toys, kite can also refer to a type of raptor. Kites have a small head, a short beak and long narrow wings and tail. Kites can be found all over the world in mostly warm regions. Kites live on a variety of prey—from insects to small rodents or reptiles. Some kites eat only one kind of prey. Kites are generally masterful in the air and represent a group of birds that are among the most acrobatic of fliers.

Two of the most familiar kites in the Southern United States are the swallow-tailed kite and the Mississippi kite. The Mississippi kite is rather plain to look at: a light brown and gray body with a buff or white colored head. But to watch a Mississippi kite fly is to watch a ballet in the air. These raptors eat primarily flying insects, so they do most of their hunting on the wing. As you might imagine, catching flying insects requires a great deal of agility and speed. If you are lucky enough to see one in flight, you will be amazed at the quick turns, graceful moves, and speedy pursuits of this bird. Look for them above large fields, especially during the summer.

The swallow-tailed kite, also common in the South, is more easily identifiable and often seen flying over roads. With black wings and tail, white head and body, and a forked or swallow-like tail, this raptor is just as acrobatic as the Mississippi kite. Swallow-tailed kites like flying over highways in the summer as they can take advantage of the thermals, or columns of warmed air, that rise above the pavement. Once they have climbed to sufficient height, swallow-tails will glide, looking for snakes and reptiles and insects. They also eat small rodents, frogs, and other birds on occasion. Watching a swallow-tail fly is a lot like watching a gymnast perform a floor routine. Rarely flapping its wings, it uses its forked tail to make sharp turns, trace circles in the sky, or simply maintain a heading. Skilled, accomplished, and graceful, this bird is as entertaining as it is beautiful.

Both kites are known to eat while flying, unlike most other birds of prey. This practice conserves energy and allows them to hunt almost continuously. While these kites are not listed as endangered, they are rare and in some states are listed as critical. Loss of habitat is the main reason for the decline. If you are lucky enough to see one, count yourself among the few. These magnificent birds are a sight you won't soon forget.

The answers are the following:

"For once, at least, I grasped the mental operations of the Morlocks. Suppressing a strong inclination to laugh, I stepped through the bronze frame and up to the Time Machine;"

" I was surprised to find it had been carefully oiled and cleaned. I have suspected since that the Morlocks had even partially taken it to pieces while trying in their dim way to grasp its purpose "

Final answer:

The Morlocks show intelligence through their attempts to understand and maintain the Time Machine, as indicated by the protagonist's realizations.

Explanation:

The correct sentences in the passage from H.G. Wells' The Time Machine that suggest the Morlocks possess a degree of intelligence comparable to that of humans are:

"For once, at least, I grasped the mental operations of the Morlocks. Suppressing a strong inclination to laugh, I stepped through the bronze frame and up to the Time Machine;"

and

"I was surprised to find it had been carefully oiled and cleaned. I have suspected since that the Morlocks had even partially taken it to pieces while trying in their dim way to grasp its purpose."

These sentences indicate not only that the Morlocks were trying to understand the Time Machine, presumably with human-like curiosity and problem-solving abilities, but they also had the mechanical skills to oil and clean it, hinting at advanced cognitive functions.

What theme is common to the two excerpts below? . . . His theory of running until he reached camp and the boys had one flaw in it: he lacked the endurance. Several times he stumbled, and finally he tottered, crumpled up, and fell. When he tried to rise, he failed. He must sit and rest, he decided, and next time he would merely walk and keep on going. As he sat and regained his breath, he noted that he was feeling quite warm and comfortable. He was not shivering, and it even seemed that a warm glow had come to his chest and trunk. And yet, when he touched his nose or cheeks, there was no sensation. Running would not thaw them out. Nor would it thaw out his hands and feet. Then the thought came to him that the frozen portions of his body must be extending. He tried to keep this thought down, to forget it, to think of something else; he was aware of the panicky feeling that it caused, and he was afraid of the panic. But the thought asserted itself, and persisted, until it produced a vision of his body totally frozen. (Jack London, To Build a Fire) Presently the boat also passed to the left of the correspondent with the captain clinging with one hand to the keel. He would have appeared like a man raising himself to look over a board fence, if it were not for the extraordinary gymnastics of the boat. The correspondent marvelled that the captain could still hold to it. They passed on, nearer to shore—the oiler, the cook, the captain—and following them went the water-jar, bouncing gayly over the seas. The correspondent remained in the grip of this strange new enemy—a current. The shore, with its white slope of sand and its green bluff, topped with little silent cottages, was spread like a picture before him. It was very near to him then, but he was impressed as one who in a gallery looks at a scene from Brittany or Algiers. He thought: "I am going to drown? Can it be possible? Can it be possible? Can it be possible?" Perhaps an individual must consider his own death to be the final phenomenon of nature."

Answers

The protagonists in both excerpts are contemplating the fact that their deaths are imminent. One is about to succumb to frostbite, while the other is on the verge of drowning. They are both introspective in these last minutes of life and yet somehow detached as they contemplate how their bodies are responding to this "final phenomenon of nature" as one put it. The first man analyses his physical feelings, as frostbite gradually takes over this body. The second man looks at the scenery on the shore, rather as a visitor observes a painting in a gallery. However, both are coming to accept as inevitable that in a short time their physical senses will no longer function.

The theme common to both excerpts is the human struggle for survival against the indifferent and overpowering forces of nature.

The common theme between the two given excerpts is the struggle for survival against nature's overwhelming and indifferent force. In both Jack London's 'To Build a Fire' and Stephen Crane's 'The Open Boat', all the characters face the harrowing reality that nature is indifferent to their suffering and fate.

Thus, these stories typically illustrate how humans, in moments of life and death, must idelly confront their insignificance in the face of the natural world's immense power. Characters in both narratives experience fear, isolation, and the realization of their own mortality, as they fight to survive against all the possible odds.

Option d )  the fish swam across the river as if it was dancing is not an example of personification. PLEASE HELP: EASY QUESTION Which supporting paragraph would best contribute to the following thesis statement? The leading pollutants contributing to global warming are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

Carbon dioxide is a gas released into the air by the burning of fossil fuels. CO2 traps the heat and creates a "greenhouse effect" on the earth. In the United States transportation and the burning of fossil fuels to make electricity are the biggest factors to the CO2 pollution. Global warming is causing dramatic weather patterns. Glaciers are melting and the world is experiencing more drought and extreme weather. It is also cause of extinction of several endangered species. These are just a few of the negative effects of global warming. I used to drive an hour to and from work every day. When I learned about global warming and the negative effects of carbon dioxide pollution, I decided to start carpooling. Now I ride to work with four co-workers. We all take turns driving, and together we're are releasing 1/4 of the amounts of pollution into the atmosphere each week. Most large cities offer "ride share" programs and incentives for participating. According to Wikipedia, "Methane is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CH4 (one atom off carbon and four atoms of hydrogen. The relative abundance of methane on Earth makes it an attractive fuel, though capturing and storing it poses challenges due to its gaseous state under normal conditions for temperature and pressure. Natural methane is found both below ground and under the sea floor."

Answers

Final answer:

The paragraph detailing carbon dioxide as a major contributor to global warming by explaining its sources and impact on the greenhouse effect aligns best with the thesis statement provided.

Explanation:

The best-supporting paragraph for the thesis statement regarding the leading pollutants contributing to global warming is the one focusing on carbon dioxide. This paragraph directly addresses one of the main pollutants mentioned in the thesis and provides detailed information on its sources, how it contributes to the greenhouse effect, and specific major activities like transportation and electricity generation as key contributors to CO2 emissions. Additionally, it ties the information back to the human behaviors that can impact these emissions, offering a complete picture of the gas's role in global warming.

In this intensely personal sonnet, Keats expresses fears that he will die young. In addition, Keats presents his regrets if he were to die young. Identify these three regrets, using details from the poem, and then summarize how the thought of dying young affects Keats

Answers

In "When I have Fears That I May Cease to Be," Keats reflects on dying young.

Three of his regrets are:

1. that he will not fulfill his goals as a writer ("Before my pen has gleaned by teeming brain")
2. that he will never look upon his beloved's face again ("fair creature...that I shall never look upon thee more")
3. that he will never enjoy powerful love ("never have relish in the faery power of unreflecting love)

The thought of dying young causes Keats to fear, as we are told from the first line. At the end of the poem, however, Keats describes how he handles such fears. He reminds himself that he is alone ("Of the wide world I stand alone") and that "love and fame" are nothing.

By reminding himself that love and fame are ultimately nothing, he can stop focusing on his three regrets, both of which involve love and fame.

Answer:

The three of his regrets are that he will not fulfill his goals as a writer "Before my pen has gleaned by the teeming brain", that he will never look upon his beloved's face again "fair creature...that I shall never look upon thee more", and also that he will never enjoy powerful love "never have relish in the faery power of unreflecting love". The thought of Keat dying young causes him to fear of these things as we are told from the very first line of this sonnet. Keat, however in the end of this sonnet, then describes how he can handle these specific fear that he once had. he reminds himself that he is always alone and that love and fame shouldn't mean anything. By reminding himself of these things, he can forget these regrets that include fame and love.

What role does sarcasm play in Pride and Prejudice? How does its role differ from that of irony? How do both sarcasm and irony affect your understanding of the story?

Answers

1- Before being able to answer these questions, you would have to understand the difference between sarcasm and verbal irony.

Verbal irony happens when a character says something while meaning something different. An example of this would be a man standing in the scorching sun stating "At least the weather is nice today" as he sweats bullets. He doesn't think that the weather is actually nice. Instead, he is pointing out how unpleasant it is by stating what it's not.

On the other hand, sarcasm, while similar to verbal irony, is mostly used to mock and ridicule the recipient of the remark. Let's say that you were to approach this man standing in the sun, and you dared to ask him if he was hot. If he was of the sarcastic kind, he would answer something like "Of course not, Einstein! I'm sweating because I like feeling moist." In a similar remark, not only would he be pointing out the obvious by stating the opposite, he would also be insulting or making fun of you in the meantime.

Now, to your questions.

2- What role does sarcasm play in Pride and Prejudice?

In both, the book and the movie, it is clear that one of the main things that sets Elizabeth Bennet (protagonist) apart from the other girls is her wit. because of this, she is able to come back with the best comebacks of the Romanticism and Victorian era (Current period in which the book was written and the period that came after). Mr. Darcy (Elizabeth's love interest), who thinks he's all that, is not used to being put to the test but rather having all girls dying to be with him. When he tries to treat Elizabeth as inferior, she demonstrates with her sarcasm that while her socioeconomic status might be inferior, her mind is not. Precisely because of her witty comebacks, Mr. Darcy was able to tell her apart from everyone else and fall for her. Because of this, we can undoubtedly conclude that sarcasm is one of Elizabeth's best features at the center of the story's conflict.

3- How does its role differ from that of irony?
While irony is still used in the hands of the characters, this is more importantly used by the author to critique the society she was in. In the time that Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice, going up the social ladder was everything that mattered, and she hated it. She wrote this novel and critiqued that aspect through it, and how women were thought of as useful in terms of marriage. She uses this to present the story's biggest irony, how the characters all preach this lifestyle while actually believing in a better reality. Mr. Darcy had everyone believe that he only cared about his role in society, while in reality being a deeply emotional man. Mr. Bennet, too, wanted his daughters to marry into wealth, but was hesitant to let Elizabeth marry Mr. Darcy for any reason other than love.

4- How do both sarcasm and irony affect your understanding of the story?

While this question is personal, it is easy to see how, without understanding irony and sarcasm, one could misinterpret the characters motivations and true emotions.

Your answer should include some of the following points:

Irony is a statement in which someone says something while meaning or conveying the opposite. It is often used to create a humorous effect. Sarcasm is a caustic remark that is intended to ridicule a person or social system.

We see an example of irony in the opening lines of the novel:

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

This statement is ironic because in Jane Austen’s time, many single women were in need of a wealthy husband, not the other way around.

Sarcasm and irony help to reveal the true nature of the characters in Pride and Prejudice. Austen uses these devices to mock the social system prevalent at the time. Mr. Bennet is often sarcastic in his conversations; and his reactions to Mrs. Bennet often force her to reveal her assumptions:

"Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!"

"How so? How can it affect them?"

"My dear Mr. Bennet," replied his wife, "how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them."

"Is that his design in settling here?"

"Design! Nonsense, how can you talk so! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes."

what was the reaction in France? How might this have led to war

Answers

Reactions in France were mixed. There were celebrations that the war was definitely over. People approved of the reparations that Germany had to pay. They also liked the fact that Germany's borders with France (the Rhineland) would be demilitarised. This meant Germany could not station any troops in this area. They appreciated that the coalmines of the Saar would bring prosperity to France instead of Germany. They also believed that the League of Nations would be a powerful force for peace. It would protect France if Germany recovered and tried to act aggressively again.

However, there was a strong sense that Germany still threatened France. Many French people looked at the terrible cost of the war and believed that France had suffered far more than Germany. Soon after the Treaty, Clemenceau stood for election as President of France. He was outraged when other candidates stood against him. It was then that he realised how bitter many people were about the Treaty.

Imala will play the solo in the concert. Is this a sentence or a fragment?

Answers

This is a sentence. You can tell because it has a subject (Imala) and a verb clause (will play). In addition, it has a direct object *what she is playing* (the solo) and a prepositional phrase for some added clarity (in the concert).

Final answer:

The sentence 'Imala will play the solo in the concert.' is a complete sentence as it contains a subject ('Imala') and a verb ('will play'), expressing a complete thought. It contrasts with a fragment, which lacks either a subject or a verb and does not express a complete thought.

Explanation:

The sentence 'Imala will play the solo in the concert.' is a complete sentence, not a fragment. A complete sentence must have at least a subject and a verb that express a complete thought. In this case, 'Imala' is the subject doing the action, and 'will play' is the verb or action being performed. The sentence also provides additional information specifying what Imala will play ('the solo') and where ('in the concert').

Understanding the difference between a fragment and a complete sentence is important in writing. A fragment may lack a subject, like in 'Told her about the broken vase,' which is missing the person who did the telling. Conversely, a complete sentence like 'I told her about the broken vase' has both the subject ('I') and the verb ('told').

In the world of music, a solo is a piece that features one musician, which can be performed with or without accompaniment. In a larger ensemble, it's the standout part where the musician's performance is highlighted, much like Imala's role in the concert.

Miller used the play as a criticism of ______.

Answers

Communism is the correct answer

Happy to help! :)

Answer:

McCarthyism.

Explanation:

Miller used the play as a criticism of McCarthyism. "The Crucible" is about the witch-hunt and the trials that took place in Salem in 1692. In this play people cared about other people's business and being accused of witchcraft was the most dangerous sin. To avoid being hanged people accused others. Miller  compares these witch trials with the ones that took place during McCarthy's time in the U.S. People feared being accused of having communist ideas. Miller himself was prosecuted and convicted.
