A noun or noun phrase is described with an adjective. Its semantic role is to alter the information provided by the noun. Adjectives have always been regarded one of the primary components of speech in the English language, but they were formerly classified with nouns.

Because they have the same ends as verb participles, adjectives with -ed or -ing endings are known as PARTICIPIAL ADJECTIVES. He was training for the Olympics, he had trained for the Olympics.

Which of the following sentences most accurately describes an example of gatekeeping?
A. A satirical news show gets higher ratings than serious news shows because it makes viewers laugh.
B. A radio producer chooses to drop a report about child obesity to make time for a report about new immigration legislation.
C. A blogger who relates news stories in a very biased way gains a following among readers who share her views.
D. A newspaper producer prints a full-color photograph of a politician spilling ketchup on a visiting dignitary's shirt.

Answers

The answer here is:

B. A radio producer chooses to drop a report about child obesity to make time for a report about new immigration legislation.

Here's why...

Gatekeeping can be defined as deciding which information is allowed to be disseminated or broadcast to the public at any time. In this case, the radio producer is deciding that immigration legislation is more important than child obesity.

Some people may disagree with the opinion of the producer and so this can be seen as a selection based on his or her own opinions of the news and current affairs.

You could also argue that the blogger is a gatekeeper, but I would say that the strongest example here is the radio producer as radio can be identified as mass media which is more accessible for most people.

The correct example of gatekeeping is a radio producer choosing which report to air, exemplifying how media gatekeepers select which news to present, influenced by their own biases and values.

The sentence most accurately describing an example of gatekeeping is: 'A radio producer chooses to drop a report about child obesity to make time for a report about new immigration legislation.' This choice exemplifies gatekeeping because it involves a decision-maker in the media selecting which stories will be communicated to the public and which will not, based on their own determinations of newsworthiness and importance.

Gatekeepers in the media serve crucial roles by determining the stories made public. This includes the selection of sources, stories, and the prominence given to each piece of news. Media gatekeepers, with their cultural biases, decide what is newsworthy, entertaining, or relevant, thus influencing the public discourse and the social values that get disseminated.

In digital media, the nature of gatekeeping has shifted, and new players have become gatekeepers, like those curating content on social media platforms or news aggregators. However, these new gatekeepers often operate without the transparency that traditional media had, making it challenging to assess the basis of their selections.

A symbol in literature is a word, image, object, event, or person that has greater meaning than its literal definition. Authors use symbols to convey ideas in a subtle way. One symbol used in the novel Frankenstein is fire. When the creature first encounters fire, he says,“'How strange, 'I thought, 'that the same cause should produce such opposite effects!'” What does fire represent throughout the novel?

Answers

Fire represents the double process of innovation. Fire can keep you warm but you don’t want to get too close or it will burn you. Science can be good and lead to new discoveries, just don’t pursue it too far.
Final answer:

In 'Frankenstein', fire symbolizes discovery, danger, and destruction. It displays the value and the dangers of knowledge and scientific progress.

Explanation:

In Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein, the symbol of fire is used to represent several themes, including discovery, destruction, and danger. Initially, fire is a symbol of enlightenment and knowledge for the creature. Upon discovering fire, the creature associates it with heat and light, illustrating scientific discovery. This mirrors Victor Frankenstein's own pursuit of knowledge. However, fire is also dangerous and destructive as it can cause pain and harm if not controlled, this represents the disastrous consequences of unchecked scientific ambition. So, fire stands both for progress and its potential detrimental consequences if misused.

Read the excerpt below from A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf and answer the question that follows. For my belief is that if we live another century or so—I am talking of the common life which is the real life and not of the little separate lives which we live as individuals—and have five hundred a year each of us and rooms of our own; if we have the habit of freedom and the courage to write exactly what we think; if we escape a little from the common sitting-room and see human beings not always in their relation to each other but in relation to reality; and the sky, too, and the trees or whatever it may be in themselves; if we look past Milton’s bogey, for no human being should shut out the view; if we face the fact, for it is a fact, that there is no arm to cling to, but that we go alone and that our relation is to the world of reality and not only to the world of men and women, then the opportunity will come and the dead poet who was Shakespeare’s sister will put on the body which she has so often laid down. Drawing her life from the lives of the unknown who were her forerunners, as her brother did before her, she will be born. As for her coming without that preparation, without that effort on our part, without that determination that when she is born again she shall find it possible to live and write her poetry, that we cannot expect, for that would be impossible. But I maintain that she would come if we worked for her, and that so to work, even in poverty and obscurity, is worth while. The correct answer is the last option - “Most people,” I told him, “believe anything they hear on television or see on the Web.”

First of all, there has to be a comma after people. That comma is followed by quotation marks. Then you have the rest of the sentence (I told him), followed by another comma (before another quotation marks.) And finally, there has to be a period within the quote, before the final quotation marks.

“Most people,” I told him, “believe anything they hear on television or see on the Web.”

A Good Day for a Bad Decision

Have you ever noticed that some people always seem to make the right choices? They may be the person who always picks the right pitch to swing at, or the one who always picks the pair of shoes that quickly become a popular fad. On the other hand, some people never seem to make a good decision. They may be the kids who ride a bike down a steep hill and crash into a bush or the ones who step to the edge of a sidewalk in time to get splashed by a car. How do some always seem to be living the good life while others seem doomed to misery? Is this just a matter of luck?

While luck probably has something do with it, the better explanation may be that the two groups have differences in the development of their brains. You see, most adult humans use their cerebral cortex to make decisions. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain in the front of your head that deals with how you perceive the world and respond appropriately. It also helps you control your impulses. This part of the brain is still growing and developing connections well into your adult years. So for young adults and teenagers, the decision-making center of the brain is not completely formed yet.

At the same time, the teenage brain is also experiencing growth in another part of the brain—the amygdala (a-mig-dala). This part of the brain is responsible for emotions. Specifically, the amygdala talks to other parts of the brain about events related to rewards and fear.

In essence, our emotional brains are having growing spurts and our impulses are out of control at the same time our cerebral cortexes are not finished growing. We simply don't have the tools to control those emotions and impulses. As a result, teenagers feel overly emotional and wishy-washy when it comes to decisions. This development cycle is one reason society doesn't consider children to be adults until after they are 18. Biologically, the teenage brain is not generally ready for adult decisions.

So the differences between those who seem to make good decisions and those who seem to make bad ones may be fewer than you think. In fact, if you study the people you think make only good decisions, you will likely find they also make some catastrophically bad ones as well. A person's ability to make a good decision increases with age and experience though we all develop at different rates. While you are young, you may want to take advantage of those around you with bigger cerebral cortexes: adults. Their advice may be just what is needed to counter your amygdala.

According to the passage, good decisions increase with what?
A)Age
B)Emotions
C)Fear
D)Rewards

Read the excerpt from "The Lottery."

The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 26th, but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took only about two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner.

Based on the setting details in this excerpt, the reader is led to believe that

the square in the village is a historical landmark that is guarded daily.
the villagers are hungry and in a hurry to get home for their lunch.
the June 27th date is an important tradition that occurs in summer.
the lottery is shorter now that population of the village has decreased.

Answer:

The June 27th date is an important tradition that occurs in summer.

Explanation:

This is the only option that can be correct. The excerpt from the lottery implies that the date is important. This is why the passage begins by citing the date, and then by describing the summer setting.

Option A is incorrect because the square does not seem to be guarded. Option B is similarly impossible because there is nothing in the excerpt that indicates that the villagers were particularly hungry. Finally, option D is similarly incorrect because nothing in the excerpt indicates that the population of the town was larger before.
