piggy represents the voice of reason and logic, but is ignored explain why (3 sentence)

Answers

Answer 1
In the Lord of the Flies, the boys find themselves stranded on a deserted island with no adults to supervise them.

At first, the boys begin by forming rules and a structured way of life. In doing so, they attempt to be orderly. It isn't long, however, before these rules quickly begin to be disregarded.

As they begin to disregard the rules, they begin to give into their savage sides. They stop wearing clothes, they cannot keep the signal fire going, and they only want to hunt and chant. They begin to be afraid of a "thing" lurking in the woods (which, of course, is not a monster at all) and even begin worshipping a dead animal. As their savagery grows, the boys do not want to hear anything reasonable and logical.

Piggy tries to be the voice of reason and logic, but the boys (with the exception of a few) don't want to hear it. On a literal level, Piggy's physical appearance (his weight, his asthma, his glasses) make him an outcast. He is forever calling the boys "children," even though he is the same age as them. This is one reason that the boys ignore Piggy.

However, Piggy is ignored for symbolic reasons as well. The boys have given into their dark sides and as a result Piggy is ignored. Their lives are given over to hunting, chanting, and savage dancing. When Piggy is finally killed at the end of the novel, it symbolizes the death of reason in the boys. All civilization in them has been destroyed by their time on the island and the fear it has created within them.

Which lines in these excerpts from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice are examples of free indirect speech?

1. Within a short walk of Longbourn lived a family with whom the Bennets were particularly intimate. Sir William Lucas had been formerly in trade in Meryton, where he had made a tolerable fortune, and risen to the honour of knighthood by an address to the king during his mayoralty. The distinction had perhaps been felt too strongly. It had given him a disgust to his business, and to his residence in a small market town; and, in quitting them both, he had removed with his family to a house about a mile from Meryton, denominated from that period Lucas Lodge, where he could think with pleasure of his own importance, and, unshackled by business, occupy himself solely in being civil to all the world. For, though elated by his rank, it did not render him supercilious; on the contrary, he was all attention to everybody. By nature inoffensive, friendly, and obliging, his presentation at St. James's had made him courteous.

2. He was quite young, wonderfully handsome, extremely agreeable, and, to crown the whole, he meant to be at the next assembly with a large party. Nothing could be more delightful! To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love; and very lively hopes of Mr. Bingley's heart were entertained. "If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield," said Mrs. Bennet to her husband, "and all the others equally well married, I shall have nothing to wish for."

Answers

Final answer:

An example of free indirect speech in the provided excerpts from Pride and Prejudice is in the second excerpt, reflecting Mrs. Bennet's thoughts on the delights of dancing and Mr. Bingley's potential affection for her daughter.

Explanation:

Free indirect speech blurs the line between the narrator's voice and a character's direct speech. In the provided excerpts from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, an example of free indirect speech can be seen in excerpt 2:

“Nothing could be more delightful! To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love; and very lively hopes of Mr. Bingley's heart were entertained.”

This passage flips between the narratorial voice and what appears to be the thoughts or spoken reflections of a character, likely Mrs. Bennet, without clear demarcation. It shows Mrs. Bennet's attitudes and desires for her daughters in a way that seems both told by a narrator and internally reflected upon by the character, typical of Austen's technique of presentation of character consciousness.

Line 1, "ago" gets an A and since Line 3 "know" rhymes with that, it also gets an A.
Line 2 "sea" does not rhyme with line 1 so it gets a B. The following lines 4 and 6 "Lee" and "me" rhyme with line 2 so they also get Bs.
Line 5 "thought" does not rhyme with anything in the lines above it, so that is why it gets a C.

Hamlet sends two letters announcing his return to england, one to horatio and one to claudius. why might shakespeare have chosen to have him send the letter to horatio even though it is not needed to advance the plot?

Answers

The letter that Hamlet sends to Horatio includes a summary of what happened while he was on the ship. Without that letter the audience would not know how he made it to the ship that was bringing him home. It also shows that Hamlet still trusts Horatio more than anyone else. Even though Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were his college best friends, they were there to spy on him so Hamlet would have a reason to distrust everyone. Writing the letter to Horatio shows that he is the only person Hamlet is willing to tell his secrets and plans to.

Final answer:

Hamlet's letter to Horatio serves to deepen the portrayal of their friendship, emphasize themes of loyalty and truth, and enhance character development and audience connection.

Explanation:

Hamlet's decision to send a letter to Horatio in Shakespeare's play, despite it not being necessary for plot advancement, is likely a character-driven choice meant to highlight the intimacy and trust between Hamlet and Horatio. This gesture underscores Horatio's role as Hamlet's confidant and the strength of their friendship, providing depth to the characters and evoking greater emotional engagement from the audience. It also serves as a tool for Shakespeare to convey themes of loyalty and truth, which are central to the narrative.

Grace could best be described as _____.

thoughtful
selfish
silly
lively

Answers

Thoughtful should be the answer

Final answer:

Grace is characterized as thoughtful and intelligent based on the descriptions in the given excerpts that highlight her abilities, underlying strength, and introspective nature.

Explanation:

Grace could best be described as thoughtful and intelligent, as the excerpts from the references show a pattern of appreciation for her talents and capabilities. In the first extract, Mr. Mortimer Jones commends Grace for her exceptional skills as a caddy, emphasizing attributes such as being willing, intelligent, and honest. The second passage reflects on Lucy Dare's character as one that could have been ordinary but suggests an underlying strength and a spark that was fuelled by unexpected events, indicating a potential for thoughtfulness rather than selfishness or silliness. Bernice, in another excerpt, exhibits a sense of introspection and agency in her actions, suggesting a thoughtful nature. While Mrs. Hale's reference to a character being timid and fluttery like a bird might imply a lively personality, it doesn't necessarily align with the descriptions of Grace found in the other passages. Finally, although other characters are described with varying attributes, the overarching sentiment leans towards Grace having a thoughtful and intelligent demeanor.

1. Refer to Explorations in Literature for a complete version of the narrative.

Read this excerpt from "Goodbye to All That" by Joan Didion.

Part of what I want to tell you is what it is like to be young in New York, how six months can become eight years with the deceptive ease of a film dissolve, for that is how those years appear to me now, in a long sequence of sentimental dissolves and old-fashioned trick shots—the Seagram Building fountains dissolve into snowflakes, I enter a revolving door at twenty and come out a good deal older, and on a different street.

How does Joan Didion's extended metaphor of comparing her time in New York to a movie affect the tone of this excerpt?

It creates a romantic, reverential tone as Didion describes snapshots of her greatest triumphs in New York.

It creates a frank, objective tone as Didion focuses on her flaws and the failures she endured while in New York.

It creates a nostalgic, meditative tone as Didion reflects on how quickly her time in New York seemed to pass.

It creates a flippant, glib tone so Didion can convey how superficial and thoughtless she was when she lived in New York.

2. Refer to Explorations in Literature for a complete version of the narrative.

Read this excerpt from "Goodbye to All That" by Joan Didion.

But to those of us who came from places where no one had heard of Lester Lanin and Grand Central Station was a Saturday radio program, where Wall Street and Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue were not places at all but abstractions (“Money,” and “High Fashion,” and “The Hucksters”), New York was no mere city.

Which statement best explains the impact that the allusion to "The Hucksters," a Hollywood film set in New York, has on the meaning of the text?

It helps Didion convey the idea that her initial conception of New York City was based on intangible ideals and fictional depictions rather than concrete experiences and reality.

It allows Didion to highlight how much she—someone who actually lived in New York—differed from those who only experienced the city through idealized depictions in the movies.

It helps Didion express her sense that there was no difference between the New York presented in the movies and the one in which she and millions of other people lived.

It allows Didion to suggest that she was unique among those who came to New York from elsewhere because she alone had developed a mental picture of the city based on film depictions of it.

3. Refer to Explorations in Literature for a complete version of the narrative.

In “Goodbye to All That,” Joan Didion says that when she lived in New York, she was “most comfortable in the company of Southerners” because they also viewed their time in New York as temporary.

Which textual detail does she include to illustrate their common shared experience?

She mentions that they all had a plane schedule in the drawer, ready to fly back to where they came from on short notice.

She recalls how they all hated New York and wanted to leave as soon as possible.

She notes that they all spoke differently than New Yorkers.

She describes how they all had a difficult time finding their way in New York when they first arrived

Answers

1. It creates a nostalgic, meditative tone as Didion reflects on how quickly her time in New York seemed to pass.

The images of the revolving door and the fountain water turning to snow are ways of showing the time passing.

2. It helps Didion convey the idea that her initial conception of New York City was based on intangible ideals and fictional depictions rather than concrete experiences and reality.

In the passage she says "us" which eliminates the last option.  She talks about how she is the one who had idealized notions of the city. The sentence following this excerpt talks about how she had a "romantic notion" of the city. This supports that her view of the city was based on tangible ideals and fictional depictions.

3. She mentions that they all had a plane schedule in the drawer, ready to fly back to where they came from on short notice.

In the text she talks about how they were on "extended leave from wherever they belong" and that they have plane tickets in their drawers.

Joan Didion's extended metaphor was important as C. It creates a nostalgic, meditative tone as Didion reflects on how quickly her time in New York seemed to pass.

Which lines from the reading best show the Cyclops to be an antagonist?

C. As soon as he'd [the Cyclops] briskly finished all his chores / he lit his fire and spied us in the blaze . . . / The hearts inside us shook, / terrified by his rumbling voice and monstrous hulk.
D. I approached my host [the Cyclops] with a cordial, winning word.

Answers

Answer:

The lines from the reading that best show the Cyclops to be an antagonist are As soon as he'd [the Cyclops] briskly finished all his chores / he lit his fire and spied us in the blaze . . . / The hearts inside us shook, / terrified by his rumbling voice and monstrous hulk.

Explanation:

An antagonist is an opposing force to the protagonist or hero of a story, it could be represented for many different things, it could be a singular person or a group of people, but in any of the cases it is certain that it someone or something that the protagonist will eventually have to confront during the progress of the story.

'Antagonist' is described as the 'opponent or the rival of the central character(protagonist) of the narrative.'

The lines that most adequately display Cyclops as an antagonist would be:

C). "As soon as he'd [the Cyclops] briskly finished all his chores / he lit his fire and spied us in the blaze . . . / The hearts inside us shook, / terrified by his rumbling voice and monstrous hulk."

The antagonist functions itself to compete against the protagonist and opposes his/her actions. This leads to a conflict among the two that evokes several undesired consequences. In the above lines, the use of words like 'spied,' 'shaking of hearts,' 'terrified,' 'monstrous,' etc. substantiate the claim that Cyclops is an antagonist who opposes the positive actions in the story. It shows Polyphemus's monstrous form(Cyclops) that leads the people to be horrified of his actions.

Thus, option C is the correct answer.
