Answer:

A) Psalm suggests that the passage of time cannot defeat the soul, while Auspex indicates that it can.

Explanation:

"A Psalm of Life" was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow while "Auspex" was written by James Russell Lowell.

According to "A Psalm of Life", time can't end a person's soul. No matter what time brings, the soul will always remain the same. Whereas, "Auspex" is in support of the death of a soul in time. The speaker of Auspex equates a man's soul with that of a bird that is gone after a period of time. Nothing lasts forever and things eventually come to an end. but, the speaker of "Psalm' suggests the idea of life even after one's death. And that there is always something to look forward to, no matter how much time had gone.

A metrical set is a pattern of accented and unaccented syllables.

True
False

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

FALSE

Final answer:

True, a metrical set is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of verse, creating what is known as meter. Analyzing these patterns through scansion allows us to understand the rhythm and musicality of a poem, which can be present in fixed forms or vary in free verse.

Explanation:

True, a metrical set is indeed a pattern of accented (stressed) and unaccented (unstressed) syllables in a line of verse. This pattern, known as meter, is fundamental to the study of poetry as it provides the rhythm and flow of a poem. The basic unit of meter is called a foot, which is comprised of a certain number of stressed and unstressed syllables. Meter is an essential component of poetry for both reading and writing verse; it guides the rhythm of the poetry and affects its musicality.

Specifically, a foot might contain two or three syllables, such as in the words 'tennis' (where the first syllable is stressed and the second is unstressed) or 'against' (where the first syllable is unstressed and the second is stressed). Through a process called scansion, we can analyze a poem's lines to identify these syllable patterns. Different patterns such as iambic, trochaic, anapestic, and dactylic are established by combining stressed and unstressed syllables in various sequences.

This meter can manifest in fixed forms such as the sonnet or haiku, or in the free and varied rhythms found in free verse. While free verse may not adhere to formal metrical patterns, traditional metrical verse often follows a strict pattern, with common meters like iambic pentameter being especially prevalent in English poetry.

Can someone tell me the theme of this short story? Randall squinted up through the trees, trying to gauge the time, but gave up quickly. He should have paid attention when his father taught the family to read the position of the sun. He should have paid attention, too, before sneaking off this morning on his first solo hike, forgetting the whistle his mother stressed he always bring.

He pictured his parents now at their camp beneath the tree with the eagle’s nest, wondering where he was. Randall was wondering the same thing. Lost and out of food, he feared he had but a few hours before darkness closed in, trapping him in the bitter cold with the creatures of the night.

He closed his eyes to fight back tears, when he heard it in the distance. Water! His father’s words came flowing into his mind; one tip he actually remembered. “If you’re ever lost, find a river and follow it.”

In a flash, he was on his feet, scaling fallen trees, tearing through brush, frantically following the sound. The sky grew darker, but the noise grew louder, and Randall, tired and scared, forged ahead until he found it. He reached the river bank and was mulling his next move when a sudden splash caught his eye.

A majestic eagle rose from the water, soaring skyward with a freshly caught fish in its talons. Could it be the same eagle nested above his camp? It glided triumphantly into a high nest a short distance away, eager to greet its family. Randall smiled, equally triumphant, eager to do the same as he followed the eagle’s flight.

In the distance, he saw his mother, his whistle clutched in her hand.

A metaphor is...

- Quoted Example/Evidence from “The Ambitious Guest”:
An example of metaphor in the story is in the line “..........”

- Analysis: How did this impact story? Explain in your own words. (3-4 sentences)

Answers

Answer:

“The Ambitious Guest” by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

1. Claim/Topic Sentence: (Define the literary term.)

A metaphor is...

A metaphor is a figure of speech that contains a comparison of two unrelated things. In other words, a characteristic of one object is given to another that you wouldn't pair it with. Example - Her voice is music to his ears. (It means that her voice makes him feel happy).

2. Quoted Example/Evidence from “The Ambitious Guest”:

An example of a metaphor in the story is in the line

"his whole life, indeed, had been a solitary path."

3. Analysis: How did this impact the story? Explain in your own words (3-4 sentences).

This metaphor creates a vivid picture in the readers' minds. His life is compared to a path, and not just a path, but a solitary one. Living is described here as walking along a path, a lonely path as he was always alone. This comparison allows having a greater impact on the readers.

I hope it helped you :)

A metaphor is a literary device that compares two different things implicitly. While an exact example from 'The Ambitious Guest' is not provided, a hypothetical example demonstrates how metaphors can add depth and emotional impact to a story.

A metaphor is a figure of speech that makes an implicit comparison between two unlike things, suggesting a resemblance or analogy between them without the use of "like" or "as". It is a powerful literary device that can add depth and meaning to a text by linking an unfamiliar idea with a familiar one, helping readers to better understand and visualize it.

Quoted Example/Evidence from “The Ambitious Guest”:

As this is a hypothetical scenario, we do not have an actual excerpt from “The Ambitious Guest” by Nathaniel Hawthorne to quote. However, if we were to use a metaphor from the story, it might look like this:

An example of a metaphor in the story is in the line “The mountain held the village in its icy grip.”

Analysis:

This metaphor enriches our understanding of the setting by giving the mountain human-like qualities, implying dominance and control over the village, perhaps as a foreshadowing tool for events to come. It evokes a vivid image, making the concept of nature's overwhelming power more tangible and immediate for the reader. Such imagery can heighten the sense of foreboding and set the tone for the rest of the narrative, deepening the emotional impact of the story on its audience.

The attacks on September 11 were… completely unsuccessful in achieving their goal. an attack on the cities of New York and Los Angeles. terrifying because the terrorists had bombs on planes. a coordinated plan that led to the deaths of thousands of people.

Answers

Answer:

a coordinated plan that led to the deaths of thousands of people.

Explanation:

We known this is the answer because the first "completely unsuccessful in achieving their goal." is incorrect. The Twin Towers were specifically targetted, and the terrorists suceeded in taking them down. Their main goal was to invoke fear into people, and to kill thousands. Both goals were achieved. The second answer "an attack on the cities of New York and Los Angeles." is partly incorrect because while the Twin Towers were in New York, Los Angeles was not attacked in any way.

The third answer "terrifying because the terrorists had bombs on planes" is not true either. There were no bombs in the attack.

Thus concluding that answer D, "a coordinated plan that led to the deaths of thousands of people", is correct. (Due to the fact that it was a coordinated plan that lead to the death of 2,977 people)

Hope this helps!

It frequently uses double negatives for emphasis. Litotes is also known classically as ostentation or moderator. A literary device called a litotes is derived from the Greek word litotes, which means "simple."

A litotes uses double negatives to convey understatement. The usage of double negatives denotes a positive, negating the expressions that are negative. By employing a double negative, litotes actually enhance the positive.

"Read the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) and answer the following questions:
a) What do you believe is the main theme Jesus is communicating?
b) Explain the three principal characters. Who do you identify with the most, and why?"

Answers

Answer:

a) The main theme that Jesus is communicating is the importance of seeking forgiveness no matter how heavy or serious the offense may be.

b) The three characters are the father, the elder and and the younger son/the prodigal son.

Explanation:

a) In the parable of "The Prodigal Son", the main theme that Jesus emphasizes and wants to show is not the return of the son nor the celebration of his return. But rather, the focus should be on the importance of asking for forgiveness. The bravery or the courage to seek forgiveness even after committing a serious mistake is the moral of the story.

b) The three main primary characters of the story are the father, and the two sons.

The father epitomizes our loving Father,God who is ever ready to welcome us with open arms irrespective of all the mistakes me make. God is always eager for us to return to him no matter what sins we may have committed. As long as we have the courage to ask for forgiveness, he is always ready to welcome us to his home.

The elder son is an example of a Christian who may be good but still fail to act like a Christian should. His relationship with God may be good and he may do everything that he is told, leading a good Christian life but this dormant life is not what matters. He still has complains whenever someone worse than him is given more importance by the Father, just like the younger son is given importance by the father.

The prodigal on/the younger soon is the example of a lost sinner who, in his greed and stubborn nature, went on his own. Even then, his father did not abandon him, just like God is with us. After making mistakes and living his life, completely forgetting his creator and father, he lived life as if he's invincible. But once things get bad and he lost everything, he came back, regretting his actions and even ready to be treated like a slave as long as he's forgiven.

At times, even I have acted like the prodigal son. Living life on my own terms and not caring about other stuffs, but then there will always come a time when everything will come to an end. So, in the end, there is only God who will be there with us, never judging or complaining.

The story of the Prodigal Son is the perfect example to show the goodness and forgiving nature of our God. He will never hold a grudge against anyone or his actions. as long as we have the courage to ask for forgiveness, he is willing to welcome us back to the fold.

Final answer:

The main theme of the parable of the Prodigal Son is God's boundless mercy and love. The father represents God, the Prodigal Son those who stray from God, and the older brother the self-righteous. Personally, I identify the most with the Prodigal Son due to the way he admits his mistakes, repents, and changes.

Explanation:

The parable of the Prodigal Son is a story told by Jesus in the New Testament. The main theme that Jesus communicates through this parable is God's boundless mercy and love, demonstrating that no matter what sins we have committed, we can always 'return home' and be received with forgiveness.

The three primary characters in the story are the father, and his two sons. The father represents God, who is full of love and forgiveness. The younger son, the Prodigal Son, rebels and squanders his portion of his inheritance, representing those who stray away from God. The older brother represents the self-righteous who look down on sinners and express anger when those sinners are shown compassion.

Personally, I identify the most with the Prodigal Son. People often make mistakes in their life, but what's more important is the courage to admit the mistakes, repent, and make necessary changes.
