What would be an appropriate thesis statement for an essay about Hercules?
A. Hercules is an important character in Greek mythology because he shows many traits valued by Greek culture.
B. Many Greek myths are still read today, and studying them will help you understand history.
C. Hercules, Zeus, and Pandora are all important mythological figures because their stories are still read today.
I am not so sure but i think it might be A. i dont really have much background information about hurcules except that i have watched the movie when i was younger.
:(
The correct answer is A. Hercules is an important character in Greek mythology because he shows many traits valued by Greek culture.
Explanation:
An appropriate thesis statement focuses on one specific topic or issue, besides this, it presents a position or interpretation the author can prove, which makes a thesis statement debatable rather than only a fact or opinion.
According to this, the most appropriate statement for an essay about Hercules is option A, because this is the only one that specifically focuses on Hercules and also this presents an interpretation of this character as one that "shows many traits valued by Greek culture" which is debatable as the author will need to provide evidence in the essay to prove this.
Select the answer with parallel structure.
A. We searched for the lost keys in the yard, inside the toy box, and in my purse.
B. We searched for the lost keys in the yard, and we looked in the toy box, and my purse.
C. We searched for the lost keys in the yard, the toy box, and inside my purse.
D. We searched for the lost keys in the yard, the toy box, and looked in my purse.
The sentence that uses parallel structure is option A) “We searched for the lost keys in the yard, inside the toy box, and in my purse.” since it uses the same grammar structure when listing things. In this case, the grammar pattern followed is a prepositional phrase that modifies the verb “searched”. The prepositional phrases are “in the yard”, “inside the toy box” and “in my purse” since all of them start with a preposition.
In the rest of the sentences there is a break in the pattern when listing the items so no parallelism is possible. In option D) for example, there is a mix of grammar structures since it starts with prepositional phrase “in the yard”, followed by a noun phrase “the toy box”, and finishes with verb phrase “looked in my purse”.

Which answer choice rewrites this sentence so that it is in the active voice? In each inning, at least one strike was thrown by the pitcher. A) In each inning, strikes were thrown by the pitcher. B) In each inning, the pitcher threw at least one strike. C) At least one strike was thrown by the pitcher in each inning. D) Strikes were thrown by the pitcher at least once in each inning.
B. The sentence in the active voice is: "In each inning, the pitcher threw at least one strike". In the passive voice, the active subject, i.e. the subject that performs the action, precedes the verb. Tenses formed with the auxiliary verb "to be" and the past participle, followed by the preposition "by" when the performer of the action is explicitly mentioned, are not used in the active voice.

Compare and contrast Red Red Rose by Robert Browning with Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
Use examples from either poems. Please, only answer if you've read or gone over this subject.
"A Red, Red rose" written by Robert Burns in the 16th century, is a romantic poem in which the author used metaphors to describe love in a fantastic, dream-like manner, exaggerating even the lenght of his love to a time in which the sea would be dry. The author's style and composition, used to recreate a traditional Scottish song, creates a very strong rythmic pattern that never breaks throughout the poem, giving the reader the feeling of very intense passion, not only through hyperboles and simile, but through the repetion of the poem's mood.
"Sonnet 43" or "How do I love thee" written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning is a 17th century poem which also eludes to romance but in terms that seem less stereotypical than Burns' poem. In it, Barrett Browning starts by asking a question and proceeding to answer throughout the poem, using anaphora to give emphasis to the purpose of her description of love. Unlike "A Red, Red rose", "Sonnet 43" uses more analogy than metaphor to describe the deep mood of love, comparing the author's feeling to strong sentiments of men and the bearings of her childhood.
Both poems exagerrate the amount of love felt by both authors for their loved ones and the lenght of time their love will last.
Burns gives his love a sense of immortality by writing: "And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry:"
and Barrett browning writes: "I shall but love thee better after death."

Identify and explain some of the basic premises of carpe diem poetry, then discuss how Raleigh’s “The Nymph’s Reply” answers these premises. Your answer should be at least 150 words.
Carpe Diem common meaning is "seize the day", which means that you must enjoy the day and maximize every moment as if it were the last. The idea is to have a productive well-lived day.
The phrase is in Latin, and was termed by the Roman poet Horace in his novel "Odes".
The "Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd", written by Sr. Walter Raleigh, refers to a young female nymph happy vision of life. For her, a true relationship must be based on loyalty and commitment, not like the shepherd's materialistic vision.
The nymph is always looking for something permanent that makes her happy, to "seize the day", even though they would be like dreaming: to be forever young, permanent happiness and true love.
What she means is that she really dreams of a joyful life with the shepherd on her side, but she realizes that he cannot afford her that because of his different and materialistic vision of life.
Carpe diem poetry emphasizes the importance of living for the present and not wasting a moment. This style often includes themes of fleeting beauty and youth. Raleigh's 'The Nymph’s Reply' presents a reply to these themes by emphasizing the temporary nature of beauty and pleasures, showcasing a more grounded perspective.
Explanation:The basic premises of carpe diem poetry often include elements of urgency and the fleeting nature of time. These poems prompt the readers to seize the day and make the most of life, not wasting a moment. The theme revolving around the temporal nature of beauty and youth is also common in these types of poems.
Sir Walter Raleigh's 'The Nymph’s Reply' responds to these premises in a thought-provoking way. In his poem, the nymph counters the shepherd's romantic and idealized offers with a grounded perspective that illustrates the transience of earthly delights. She deflates the carpe diem ideal by highlighting that beauty fades, seasons change, and the joys of youth are fleeting. This response to the carpe diem theme presents a more realistic stance on the impermanence of youth and beauty.

“My Brother Paul”
How does Dreiser organize the events that occur in Paul’s life? What connection is Dreiser making between these events?
Question 1:
The events are organized in chronological order.
Question 2:
The events show how Paul goes from being a relatively successful, affable character, to being destitute and abandoned by most of his friends. The connecting element between the events is how goodness can be found in unexpected and unconventional places. Paul is characterized as being "generous to the point of self-destruction." Paul ends up sinking into depression after a series of bad events and dies at his sister's house of a heart attack.
The events Dreiser describes happen at different moments in time; however, they’re still in chronological order. The events show how his views regarding his brother Paul change over time. They also map the evolution of Paul’s mental breakdown. In the beginning of the story, Paul is described as young, hopeful, and resilient. As he grows, a little bit of his cheerful disposition gets chipped away with each event Dreiser describes. Ultimately, he loses most of his earnings, sinks into depression, and dies at his sister’s house.

Compare and contrast the narrative qualities of “Mending Wall” and “Casey at the Bat.” Both poems create a tense mood. Quote two examples from each poem that show the development of tension in the plot. Then describe how these lines develop the tension that is in the narrative.
Poems in the comments
1. "That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said.
2. Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;
Tese both show tension in casey at bat the first one starts tension by him missing as the second shows it by the crowd yelling fraud the tension builds as you read caseys reaction.
If you right the mending wall down I can show you the tensioun in that as well.
Hope that helps!!
Answer:
Mending Wall:
“Something here doesn’t love a wall, / That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it, / And spills the upper boulders in the sun; / And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.” “Lá onde está, não precisamos do muro: / Ele é todo pinheiro e eu sou um pomar de maçãs. / Minhas macieiras nunca cruzam / E comem os cones debaixo dos pinheiros, digo a ele. / Ele apenas diz: "Boas cercas são bons vizinhos".Casey at the Bat:
“Then from 5000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell; / It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell; / It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled upon the flat, / For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.” “From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar, / Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stem and distant shore. / “Kill him! Kill the umpire!” shouted someone on the stand; / And it’s likely they’d a-killed him had not Casey raised his hand.”Explanation:
The two highlighted verses of "Mending Wall" show how tension is developed in the course of the work. In the first verse, we can see that the speaker is showing his dissatisfaction compared, which seems a bit contradictory since the poem refers exactly to that, walls. The speaker has a list of reasons why these constructions are bad and disadvantageous. In the second verse, the central conflict shown by the poem is developed. In this verse, the speaker of the poem shows all the disadvantages of building walls for his neighbor, in an attempt to convince him that the construction of a wall is not necessary, since the lands of both are completely different, that is, they will not confuse the land of one with the land of the other. The neighbor, however, does not agree with this and says that the construction of the wall is essential for them to maintain a good relationship.
The highlighted lines from “Casey at the Bat” are also essential to show how tension is developed in the poem. In the first verse, we see a crowd of people shouting, which already creates a certain tension in the reader. Soon after, we noticed Casey's appearance, which is not an appearance full of tranquility, but something with a certain sense of threat and despair. The second verse shows an unruly, nervous crowd, which promotes a feeling of disorder and insecurity, increasing the tension of the poem.

What is a passage?A passage is technically only a piece or section of a written work, whether fiction or nonfiction. Some argue that a passage can be as short as a sentence, yet most are at least one paragraph long, if not more.
Some passages contain quotes from numerous sources and may lack a central theme of their own. However, in the majority of cases and on the majority of exam parts, a paragraph delivers a well curated extract that can be viewed as carrying some form of deeper meaning. This larger meaning may appear as a thesis or claim in a nonfiction paragraph or as a contained plot in a fiction piece.
Therefore, option A is the event that occurred first.

Read the excerpt from "The Three Questions" by Leo Tolstoy.
All the answers being different, the King agreed with none of them, and gave the reward to none. But still wishing to find the right answers to his questions, he decided to consult a hermit, widely renowned for his wisdom.
The hermit lived in a wood which he never quitted, and he received none but common folk. So the King put on simple clothes, and before reaching the hermit's cell dismounted from his horse, and, leaving his body-guard behind, went on alone.
When the King approached, the hermit was digging the ground in front of his hut. Seeing the King, he greeted him and went on digging. The hermit was frail and weak, and each time he stuck his spade into the ground and turned a little earth, he breathed heavily.
The King went up to him and said: "I have come to you, wise hermit, to ask you to answer three questions: How can I learn to do the right thing at the right time? Who are the people I most need, and to whom should I, therefore, pay more attention than to the rest? And, what affairs are the most important, and need my first attention?"
The hermit listened to the King, but answered nothing. He just spat on his hand and recommenced digging.
"You are tired," said the King, "let me take the spade and work awhile for you."
Which paragraphs from the excerpt best support the conclusion that the author’s primary purpose is to teach a lesson? Select two options.
A)“All the answers being different, the King agreed with none of them, and gave the reward to none. But still wishing to find the right answers to his questions, he decided to consult a hermit, widely renowned for his wisdom.”
B)“The hermit lived in a wood which he never quitted, and he received none but common folk. So the King put on simple clothes, and before reaching the hermit's cell dismounted from his horse, and, leaving his body-guard behind, went on alone.”
C)“When the King approached, the hermit was digging the ground in front of his hut. Seeing the King, he greeted him and went on digging. The hermit was frail and weak, and each time he stuck his spade into the ground and turned a little earth, he breathed heavily.”
D)“The King went up to him and said: ‘I have come to you, wise hermit, to ask you to answer three questions: How can I learn to do the right thing at the right time? Who are the people I most need, and to whom should I, therefore, pay more attention than to the rest? And, what affairs are the most important, and need my first attention?’”
E)“The hermit listened to the King, but answered nothing. He just spat on his hand and recommenced digging.”
F)“’You are tired,’ said the King, ‘let me take the spade and work awhile for you.’”
Paragraph A sets up the mood for the story, letting you know the king is both unsatisfied and willing to go further to obtain this elusive information he seeks. This sets up a text that will indeed give you some information, most likely in the form of a lesson.
After this the conclusion, paragraphs E and F are simple but meaningful in the way how they contrast with what we've been led to believe this far, the hermit barely acknoledges a king and manages to make him offer to do manual labor for him without as much as uttering a word. The way this clashes with what one believes of a king indicates that there's a lesson there, in what the hermit does to accomplish this, if only ones analizes the scene.
The answers are A & D

Ekran shares stories about his family and his past with Michelle. Ekran sometimes lives in his own world, so Michelle decides to try to understand that world. The statements that develop the theme "people often have more in common than they might think" are "Michelle notices that they both have dark skin and are both outsiders in the nursing home"; "Erkan shares stories about his family and his past with Michelle"; and "Erkan sometimes lives in his own world, so Michelle decides to try to understand that world".
The first selected statement (Michelle notices that they both have dark skin and are both outsiders in the nursing home) shows that people have more in common than they think because it describes Michelle noticing her similarities with someone else.
The second selected statement (Erkan shares stories about his family and his past with Michelle) shows that Ekran is sharing his experiences, therefore creating proximity and the opportunity for them to identify with each other.
The third selected statement (Erkan sometimes lives in his own world, so Michelle decides to try to understand that world) shows that Michelle is trying to develop empathy, which is the ability to put oneself in another's shoes, by identifying with their reality and their world.
The statement "Michelle wanted to intern at her father's gas station, so she has little patience with the residents" isn't correct because it doesn't show that Michelle has something in common with other people, on the contrary, it shows a difference and her little patience, which can cause distance and not proximity. The statement "Michelle is afraid of Erkan who is loud and unruly, so she avoids him as much as possible" isn't correct because it shows a feeling of rejection that Michelle has towards Erkan because of the way he is, which is different from hers.
this is the answer dumbed down
Ekran sometimes lives in his own world, so Michelle decides to try to understand that world.
Ekran shares stories about his family and his past with Michelle.
Michelle notices that they both have dark skin and are both outsiders in the nursing home.
