What makes this passage an example of formal rather than informal writing?

its vocabulary and grammar
its use of conversational language
its first-person narration
its humorous tone

Answers

Its vocabulary and grammer

The answer is: its vocabulary and grammar.

The passage about Edgar Allan Poe contains formal writing characteristics, which are used to communicate in a business or academic environment, or with people we are not acquainted with. For example, the text does not include contractions or slang, it is not written in the first person and it makes use of the passive voice. Furthermore, it possesses some compound sentences, and its vocabulary consists of longer words than in informal language, some of which have Latin and Greek origins.

What happened during the Great Leap Forward?

A. Intellectuals dominated the government.

B.Students became revolutionaries.

C.Peasants were organized into large communes.

D.Mao and his forces escaped from their enemies.

Choose one.

Answers

During the Great Leap Forward, Mao tried to produce more grain and iron among other resources, but instead, he primarily ended up with a lot more dead bodies and a forever tainted legacy.I think it is important to analyze the motivation behind the Great Leap Forward in order to gain a better understanding as to what exactly happened during the time period. The most basic theory could be that Mao was truly trying to improve the state of China. At this time, China was definitely lagging behind most European nations and America while historically, China was far ahead of these nations (think Tang Dynasty).
One key factor that drove Western nations ahead of China was industrialization.
Mao probably knew this, and it was definitely logical to think that China needed to industrialize in order to reach greater heights. In fact, the Great Leap Forward can be seen as one giant attempt to industrialize.Another idea is that the Great Leap Forward was Mao’s plan to cement his own power. On the surface level, if the Great Leap Forward succeeded, the Chinese people would view Mao as a national hero, bringing China back onto the forefront of the world stage.
But even if the Great Leap Forward didn’t succeed in its economic ambitions, it would have strengthened the sense of Chinese national identity.
The Great Leap Forward mobilized almost all of China towards one common goal, and arguably for the first time, people living in rural areas were incorporated substantially in a national policy.
This focus on people living in rural areas, which was the vast majority of China during the time of the Great Leap Forward, gave Mao their approval. The motivation behind the Great Leap Forward is a topic of debate, but the result of the Great Leap Forward is not really shrouded in mystery.
Tens of millions of people died and the Chinese economy shrunk considerably due to failed enactment of Mao’s ideas (people should have realized sooner that melting cooking pots was not a great source of metal and over farming lands led to rotting crops, not more crops). Many people speak of the Great Leap Forward and the Great Chinese Famine as two separate events, with one causing the other, but I think that the two terms should really be synonyms. But if I would've choose one of these answers, I would say C. Hoped I helped!

Things that happened during the Great Leap Forward was, Peasants were organized into large communes.

What is organized?

Organized refers to a well-arranged something.

Because Mao attempted to increase production of commodities like grain and iron during the Great Leap Forward, but instead he mostly obtained a lot more dead corpses and a permanently tarnished record. The simplest explanation is that Mao genuinely wanted to change China's situation. On the surface, the Great Leap Forward's success would make Mao a national hero and put China back in the spotlight in the international arena. Although there are many opinions on the Great Leap Forward's motive, its outcome is not particularly mysterious. Thus the thing that happened during the Great Leap Forward was, Peasants were organized into large communes.

Hence the correct option is, C. Peasants were organized into large communes.

a.the myth’s plot, or series of actions

b.dialogue essential to the story

c.indirect characterization, or the character’s own words that reveal what he or she is like

d.an explanation of a character or god unfamiliar to Ali

Answers

The answer is D. If Ali was reading a Nordic myth, for example, he probably wouldn't know any of the gods in the myth.

Answer: D) an explanation of a character or god unfamiliar to Ali.

Explanation: a footnote is a note of reference, explanation, or comment, that gives extra information about a specific part of the text, usually placed below the text on a printed page. If Ali is reading a myth from northern Europe, a footnote might provide an explanation of a character or god (very common in myths from northern Europe) unfamiliar to Ali, so the correct answer is option D.

(Save your work from today to help you with your essay) For your assignment today: Identify one theme that has emerged in the play. Explain one way this theme is developed. Support your answer with one quote from the text.

Some themes you might consider in the play include:

Greed
Power and ambition
What it means to be masculine and feminine
Trying to persuade
Idealism
What it means to be a (good/bad) leader
The importance of omens
The difference between villains and heroes

The play shows the power of the words. It is mentioned with the lines “When Caesar says ‘Do this,’ it is performed,” by Antony, who shows the similar character to Octavius. Words also have got the weight of emotions and thoughts in the play. Relevant example is Antony's lines of “Let each man render me with his bloody hand”. It is actually Antony's own intention for his conspirators. The speech of Brutus and his justification of the killing of Caesar is another example for the power of the words which he confirms his deed in disguise.

How is this so far? First, I like carpeting because I take interest in carpeting so the structure looks good. You have to take the carpet and make it as a triangle and make it like a three dimensional triangle with the whole floor. Make sure you get a good angle maybe about a 90 degrees’ angle on a carpet floor. You can also make three – d dimensional triangles as well. You can make double and triple triangles on the floor to as well. Carpeting can be so much fun. But sometimes it can be really hard.

Answers

Carpeting requires understanding of shapes, like triangles with internal angles adding up to 180 degrees, and physics concepts such as heat transfer, where different materials conduct heat at different rates. This explains why materials like ceramics feel colder than wool carpet even at the same temperature.

Understanding Carpeting from a Physics Perspective

While carpeting can be an enjoyable activity, it also offers an interesting study in physics, particularly when analyzing shapes and thermal properties. Firstly, when discussing making a carpet in the shape of a three-dimensional triangle, you're essentially considering geometric design and spacial structure. Typically, a triangle is a three-sided figure lying on a plane, with its internal angles adding up to 180 degrees. This holds true for any flat, two-dimensional shape resembling a triangle.

As for the practical application of physics in everyday experiences with carpeting and flooring materials, thermal conductivity is a relevant concept. When standing with one foot on ceramic flooring and one on wool carpet, there is a variance in the rate of heat transfer. This is why different materials at the same temperature can feel different to the touch. Materials that transfer heat more efficiently, such as ceramics (often compared to glass in terms of thermal properties), will feel colder than materials like wool carpeting, which are better insulators and do not remove heat from your skin as quickly.

In a classroom activity, adding vectors using steps and masking tape demonstrates how we can map out a distance and direction path on a floor, much like how carpeting is laid out on a subfloor. This activity not only highlights the importance of precision and measurement in physics but also ties back into the geometry of shapes and their sizes when considering carpet design.

What type of figurative language is a new world of bustling factories?

Answers

If this is the entire example, and there is not something following the comma to which the new world of bustling factories is being compared, there are two possibilities, depending on the definition of "bustling". Metaphor or personification.
(If there is something following the comma to which the new world of bustling factories is being compared, the figure of speech is most likely a metaphor.)
METAPHOR is when two different things are compared as if they are literally alike, even though they are not. In this case, "bustling" means a place that is full of activity, so the factory is busy and full of activity. We could imagine that to be a place full of things and people that are actively moving about, creating things, making things, etcetera, like a factory where cars are produced. That place would be loud and probably dirty, full of parts being put together, machinery operating, and people assembling things. This is quite unlike what people might imagine a "new world" to be like. A new world would be one that is undiscovered by people, so activity would be limited, it would most likely be quieter than a factory. It would most likely be pristine and clean and devoid of the markings of man. A new world and a bustling factory, then, would not be literally alike at all.

Another possibility is PERSONIFICATION in which a non-human thing is treated as if it were human and given human characteristics. If you take the word "bustling" to mean 'a person scurrying about' then the phrase bustling factories could also be giving the factories the human ability to "bustle" or "scurry about", which a factory can't actually do on it's own. This figure of speech would allow a person/reader to imagine the factories as a people, bustling about and running themselves, creating things on their own, and doing the work of people, as if the city were full of workers.
Final answer:

The phrase "a new world of bustling factories" is an example of metaphor, as it compares factories to a new world.

Explanation:

The phrase "a new world of bustling factories" is an example of metaphor, which is a direct comparison between two unlike things. In this case, the speaker is comparing the factories to a new world. The use of this figurative language helps create a vivid image and emphasizes the transformative nature of industrialization.

What clue does Sherlock Holmes find by studying the letter that Sir Henry receives in London?

that some of the words were the same as on a times newspaper clipping whoever it was ,was an educated man but wanting not to be
Final answer:

Sherlock Holmes used his exceptional observational skills to deduce information from letters, although the provided texts do not directly relate to a canonical Sherlock Holmes story. His analytical approach often led to uncovering key clues in the investigations.

Explanation:

The question refers to Sherlock Holmes analyzing a letter received by Sir Henry in London. Although the provided sample letter and other excerpts are creatively styled as though from the perspective of Sherlock Holmes, they are not directly related to the canonical stories created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. However, in the Sherlock Holmes narrative, Holmes often exhibited exceptional observational skills to deduce information from seemingly innocuous details in letters and other clues. For example, Holmes might notice inconsistencies in the handwriting, peculiarities in the stationery used, or hidden messages that a less trained observer might overlook.

Such examples showcase Holmes's deductive reasoning and attention to detail, which are hallmark traits of the famous detective. While the provided texts do not offer a specific letter from an original story by Conan Doyle, they illustrate the manner in which Holmes might approach a letter to uncover hidden clues that could lead to the resolution of a case.

What does scout mean when she suggests that telling the truth about Bob Ewells death would be like “shooting a mockingbird “

Answers

Answer:

Scout thinks that it will be wrong to punish the wrong innocent man who does nothing wrong, just like a mockingbird.

Explanation:

Atticus had already told his children that mockingbirds are birds who do no harm to anyone or annoy anyone, rather they make sweet music for people to enjoy. So, when Atticus and Sheriff Tate were discussing about the murder of Bob Ewell, and that Boo Radley was the culprit, Scout references the mockingbird image to Boo and said that killing Boo will exactly be like killing a mockingbird, given that Boo is a shy and reserved person. (He also used to give gifts to Scout and Jem). So, the use of the mockingbird image is suggestive of the reference to innocent people who should not be harmed.

Boo harms no one, and would suffer in the attention

Which sentence uses a nominative case pronoun

Answers

First, what are the sentences that you need to analyze?

Nominative case pronouns are I, you, he, she, it, we, they, who, whoever.

They are the SUBJECTS of sentences, or the doers of the actions. Pronouns take the place of nouns, and when a pronoun takes the place of a noun in the subject of a sentence it is in the nominative case. Nominative case pronouns DO things. They always tell who or what acted in the sentence because they are the subject of the sentence.

*HINT: the root 'nom' in the word nominative means 'to name', so think of the pronoun naming the doer of the action.

Examples:

I went to the grocery store. (I is the nominative pronoun and the subject of the sentence, went is the verb. I names who went to the store.)

Are they going to go to the store this morning? (THEY is the nominative pronoun and the subject of the sentence, are going is the verb. You names who is going to the store.)

You must think that John loves cookies! (YOU is the nominative pronoun and the subject of the sentence, must think is the verb. You names what person loves cookies.)

Whoever decides on a book had better choose a good one for book club! (WHOEVER is the nominative pronoun and the subject of the sentence, decides is the verb. Whoever names who decides on a book.)

We sang a song to the children. (WE is the nominative pronoun and the subject of the sentence, sang is the verb. We names who sang a song to the children.)

Cats: Entertaining at a House Near You A cat named Bucket lives in my house. He is named after the device used to rescue him from a near death encounter with an apartment manager. Saved by a painter with a large, empty paint bucket, he came into our home like a marauding invader, taking every heart by storm, battling back our doubts, and snuggling into his bucket for naps during the first week with us. Because of his quirky beginnings, he developed personality traits that continue to annoy, charm, and entertain us. He chatters constantly, telling us of his day when we return home. He plays with shadows on the wall. He dashes from one end of the house to another with no apparent target or purpose. Watching Bucket is better than watching television most nights. Bucket's effect on our lives is not unique. It turns out cats profoundly improve their owners' lives. For that reason alone, cats should surely be considered the best pet on Earth. First, cat lovers are smarter than ardent fans of dogs. A British study found that people who own cats are more likely to have college degrees. While the study was careful to point out that the cats aren't causing people to be smarter, it does suggest cats are the smart choice for those who want to appear smart. The theory is that because smarter people tend to work longer they may choose cats as pets more often. As cats are known to be more independent, this choice seems wise. Second, cats are better for the environment. Cats are more likely to eat fish than beef or corn. Fish has a lower carbon footprint—or impact on the environment—than beef and corn which dominate a dog's diet. The resources needed to care for cats are much less than those needed for dogs. Cats eat less than dogs do, and so are also more economical in terms of costs to their owners. Third, cats offer great emotional benefits. They provide companionship, often asking for attention or affection that is then returned to their human. Humans tend to respond to a cat's purring with affection, petting, and comforting words. In return, humans feel an increased sense of calm and peacefulness. Cats also have been shown to help people who have endured a painful loss to feel better sooner. It's thought that having something to talk to that will only listen and not judge helps people cope with loss. With all these benefits, it's hard to understand the people who report a strong dislike of cats. Sure they can be aloof. They do seem to want life on their own terms. But the benefits they provide far outweigh their quirks. Bucket, for example, will always be a special, wonderful kitty, despite his tendencies to knock things off of high places, turn over food bowls, and bite the dog's face. Cats are simply the best. What is the main point of the second paragraph? Cats have abilities to make people smart. Cat owners tend to be smarter. Some studies have examined cats' intelligence. Some people like to appear smart.
