Memories of a Memory
Have you ever witnessed something amazing, shocking or surprising and found when describing the event that your story seems to change the more you tell it? Have you ever experienced a time when you couldn't really describe something you saw in a way that others could understand? If so, you may understand why some experts think eyewitness testimony is unreliable as evidence in scientific inquiries and trials. New insights into human memory suggest human memories are really a mixture of many non-factual things. First, memory is vague. Imagine your room at home or a classroom you see every day. Most likely, you could describe the room very generally. You could name the color of the walls, the floors, the decorations. But the image you describe will never be as specific or detailed as if you were looking at the actual room. Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details. So when a witness tries to identify someone, her brain may recall that the person was tall, but not be able to say how tall when faced with several tall people. There are lots of different kinds of "tall." Second, memory uses general knowledge to fill in gaps. Our brains reconstruct events and scenes when we remember something. To do this, our brains use other memories and other stories when there are gaps. For example, one day at a library you go to quite frequently, you witness an argument between a library patron and one of the librarians. Later, when telling a friend about the event, your brain may remember a familiar librarian behind the desk rather than the actual participant simply because it is recreating a familiar scene. In effect, your brain is combining memories to help you tell the story. Third, your memory changes over time. It also changes the more you retell the story. Documented cases have shown eyewitnesses adding detail to testimony that could not have been known at the time of the event. Research has also shown that the more a witness's account is told, the less accurate it is. You may have noticed this yourself. The next time you are retelling a story, notice what you add, or what your brain wants to add, to the account. You may also notice that you drop certain details from previous tellings of the story. With individual memories all jumbled up with each other, it is hard to believe we ever know anything to be true. Did you really break your mother's favorite vase when you were three? Was that really your father throwing rocks into the river with you when you were seven? The human brain may be quite remarkable indeed. When it comes to memory, however, we may want to start carrying video cameras if we want to record the true picture. Which line from the text best explains the main problem with recalling details of a scene or room?
A.   You could name the color of the walls, the floors, the decorations B.Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details
C.Her brain may recall that the person was tall, but not be able to say how tall when faced with several tall people
D.In effect, your brain is combining memories to help you tell the story

Answers

Answer 1
The answer to your question is B hope this helps
Answer 2

Answer:

B. Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details.

Explanation:

The text talks about how memory tends to be distorted in it's own way to change or alter little bits of information when it is again retold. And when that happens, the new retold recounted story is not exactly what had happened. Rather, it tends to be a story with some added details though not intentionally by the teller. It is our brain's way of making us complete the story or at times to fill the forgotten bits of the story to make it full. And it is not always the case when one can fully recount a story or incident with the full exact details.

Final answer:

With MLA style, the two correct ways to cite sources are through a works cited page and in-text citations embedded within the paper's content.

Explanation:

The two ways to properly cite sources when using the Modern Language Association (MLA) style are through a works cited page and in-text citations. An in-text citation occurs directly after the reference in the main body of the essay. It usually includes the author's last name and the page number of the reference. For example, (Smith, 45). On the other hand, a works cited page is a separate page at the end of your paper that includes all of the sources that you've referenced in your paper. It provides the full citation so that your reader can refer to the original source if desired.

one of the boys left their jacket in the locker room. Identify the type of error found in the sentence. A) spelling error B) possessive error C) subject-verb agreement error D) pronoun-antecedent agreement error

Answers

Final answer:

The error in the sentence is a pronoun-antecedent agreement error, where 'their' should be replaced with 'his' or 'his or her' to correctly match the singular antecedent 'one of the boys'.

Explanation:

The error found in the sentence 'one of the boys left their jacket in the locker room.' is a pronoun-antecedent agreement error. The pronoun 'their' is plural, while the antecedent 'one of the boys' is singular. The correct pronoun to match the singular antecedent in this case would be 'his' if we are to assume all the boys are male, or 'his or her' if the gender is not specified or to be inclusive.

Final answer:

The sentence contains a pronoun-antecedent agreement error. 'One' is singular and 'their' is plural; for correct agreement, 'one' should be paired with 'his,' 'his or her,' or the structure of the sentence changed to a plural antecedent and pronoun.

Explanation:

The error found in the sentence 'one of the boys left their jacket in the locker room' is a pronoun-antecedent agreement error. The antecedent 'one' is singular, but the pronoun 'their' is plural. To correct the sentence, the pronoun should agree in number with its antecedent. Therefore, the sentence should read 'one of the boys left his jacket in the locker room' if we are certain that the antecedent refers to a male. If the gender is not known or to be gender-neutral, 'his or her' or 'their' could be used with a plural antecedent such as 'Any of the boys left their jackets in the locker room'.

Read the excerpt below from the introduction to the book Access to the Genome: The Challenge to Equality and answer the questions that follow.

As genetic technology and other technologies relevant to human biology are developed, society will face a host of complex ethical, legal, and social issues. One of the most complex sets of issues involves our choices over who will have access to these technologies. . . . If, indeed, diseases can be cured or prevented, and if embryos can be selected or enhanced, but the technologies are not available for all to have [due to affordability], how will our society respond? What does justice require, and what will political realities permit?

The issues surrounding how to distribute access to new genetic technologies are the focus of this book. These questions and problems are not new—we struggle now with the fair allocation of vital health care resources in a society marked by great discrepancies in wealth. But genetic technologies will dramatically up the ante as the menu of powerful possibilites expands. With the possible exception of slavery, these technologies represent the most profound challege to cherished notions of social equality ever encountered. Decisions over who will have access to what genetic technologies will likely determine the kind of society and political system that will prevail in the future.

Before discussing the social and moral issues raised by these questions, we will first provide some background information on the genetic revolution itself. In the next chapter, we describe the massive effort to decode the human genetic recipe. In Chapter Three, we describe the technologies that this effort is likely to produce and the potential benefits that they will provide. Then we will embark on a discussion of the social and ethical problems that these technologies pose and, finally, discuss potential solutions. (Mehlman 6)

Transportation Strike Disrupts Westridge

Thousands unable to get to work or school

WESTRIDGE, Ohio — More than 600 transportation employees went on strike at midnight last night after the Westridge City Council rejected their demand for a 10% pay increase. The strike affects all bus and rail services throughout Westridge and the neighboring communities of Turlock, Smithfield, and Lowell Grove.

“We hoped we would not be forced to strike, but until our demands are met, we really have no choice,” said Wanda Thompson, a representative of the Transportation Employees Union. “We simply don’t get paid what we deserve.”

Members of the Westridge City Council see the situation differently. “Our employees already earn 6% more than the state average for similar transportation jobs,” said Raoul Cobian, President of the Westridge City Council.

Hopefully the two groups can come to an agreement soon and bring this unnecessary strike to an end.

From “The Story of an Hour” Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhole, imploring for admission. “Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door—you will make yourself ill. What are you doing, Louise? For heaven’s sake, open the door.” “Go away. I am not making myself ill.” No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window. Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, and summer days, and all sorts of days that would be her own. She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.

What is ironic in this passage?

Answers

Irony is a literary device which is used by authors and poets where the usage of a word or a sentence has the complete opposite meaning in the context. The ironic thing in this passage is option B: that Mrs. Mallard is thinking about her long life just before her own death.

Understanding irony in the passage from “The Story of an Hour”:

The answer can be better understood as given below:

• The irony can be seen in the fact that Mrs. Mallard has been praying for a long life and had recently been thinking about a long life too.

• She said and did all these things right before her own death happened, which is the irony of the situation.

Therefore, the correct answer is B which tells us that her thinking of a long life just before her death is ironic.

Final answer:

The irony in 'The Story of an Hour' revolves around Mrs. Mallard's shift from dreading a long life to cherishing the freedom it could bring after her husband's reported death, and the ultimate irony of her dying from shock when he returns alive, which the doctors mistakenly call 'the joy that kills.'

Explanation:

The irony in the passage from “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin lies in the drastic change in Mrs. Mallard's feelings towards her life before and after the news of her husband's death. Initially, the thought of a long life filled her with dread, but after she learns about her husband's supposed passing, she sees that same long life as a series of spring and summer days filled with freedom and opportunities for self-assertion. This contrast between dread and excitement over a long life exemplifies the story's ironic use of the situation, highlighting the complex nature of marriage and personal freedom during the era.

Furthermore, the passage also points to an event that is ultimately the most dramatic irony of the story: despite Josephine's fears that Louise will make herself ill, Louise dies from the shock of joy (“the joy that kills”) when her husband unexpectedly returns alive. The doctors mistakenly attribute her death to joy, whereas the cause of death is more likely the sudden loss of the freedom she newly cherished.

In Emily Dickinson's poem 'Will There Really Be a Morning?", the speaker is metaphorically questioning the existence of heaven. She wonders if Jesus, angels, and the peaceful place we conceive as heaven are truly real, if she will ever see them. She then directs her questions to the Scholar, the Sailor, and the Wise Man. The reason why she capitalizes those words is her regard of those people as possessors of great knowledge. She is turning to them for answers, trusting they may know what she doesn't:

Oh some Scholar! Oh some Sailor!

Oh some Wise Men from the skies!

What do we know to be the cause of the change of seasons (wordly wise)

Answers

Final answer:

The change in seasons is caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis, resulting in varying angles of sunlight and therefore different amounts of solar energy received throughout the year. This causes warmer temperatures in the summer and colder temperatures in the winter, not the distance from the Sun.

Explanation:

The cause of the change of seasons is not due to the Earth moving closer or farther from the Sun, but is rather caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis. The Earth's axis is inclined at an angle of 23.5° relative to the plane of its orbit around the Sun, leading to variations in the angle of sunlight received during different times of the year. This axial tilt means that different parts of the Earth receive different amounts of solar energy throughout the year, with more direct sunlight and longer days in the summer leading to warmer temperatures, and less direct sunlight and shorter days in the winter resulting in colder temperatures.

Contrary to a common misconception, the distance from the Sun does not significantly affect the seasons, as Earth's orbit only varies this distance by a small amount. It is the change in solar angle, influenced by Earth's axial tilt, that causes the shift in seasons.

The prince wakes up and marries the girl. This story disrupts traditional gender roles and expectations by having a female character rescue the male character, which is a reversal of the classic 'damsel in distress' narrative. Additionally, the union between a prince and a poor girl breaks social class boundaries, further challenging traditional storytelling norms where princes typically marry within their own social rank.
