New Technology Leads to Bigger Cities In the 1800s, the United States was still a very young nation, trying to solidify its identity. The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain, a fast development of society following the introduction of machines. The United States was slower than Great Britain to fully embrace the changes. Yet key technological developments caused a rapid growth in American urban areas. Better farming methods and tools in the 1800s increased food production. Americans were able to grow enough food for their families as well as to sell. The abundance caused food prices to fall. The expansion of cotton and the growth of textile factories in northern states helped produce the first wave of American industry. More people turned to work in northern factories as a way to support their families. Thousands of immigrants to the United States also settled in or near port cities, looking for work. Even today, the need for work is a common reason people move to urban areas. As a result, cities grew in numbers of people and physical space. As more people and businesses moved in, they needed buildings for living and working. They needed ways to move around the city. We call this process urbanization. In 1820, the United States had only a few cities of 10,000 residents or more. About seven percent of U.S. residents lived in urban areas. The number of cities with more than 10,000 people grew quickly over the next 40 years, especially in the Northeast and Midwest. By 1860, about 20 percent lived in cities. Philadelphia and New York City were the most populated cities in 1860 and would soon reach one million residents. The urbanization of the United States quickened due to technology improvements. Without innovations in food production, the factories could not have grown so quickly. The trend quickened after 1860 and continued throughout the 21st century as well. By 2007, more Americans lived in or near cities than they did in rural areas.
Select a sentence from the body of this article that can be removed without affecting the author's explanation. Place the sentence in quotes and explain why it is an unnecessary detail.

Answers

Answer: "Without innovations in food production, the factories could not have grown so quickly."

This sentence is placed in the text as an example of how urbanization increased thanks to technological improvements. However, no other part of the text discusses food production. Also, the author does not explain how it is that food production contributed to the development of factories. Because it is only loosely related to the topic and it adds so few details, it is a superfluous sentence. It is possible to remove it without significantly affecting the rest of the text.

Answers

Final answer:

The sentence 'The class graduates in June.' uses the simple future tense, indicated by the expectation of the action to happen in the future.

Explanation:

The sentence 'The class graduates in June.' is in the simple future tense. This is determined by the use of the modal 'will' implied before the verb 'graduates' to indicate an action that has not yet happened but is expected to happen in the future. In sentences where the future action is indicated by a time frame instead of the explicit use of 'will' or 'shall,' it still conforms to the simple future tense usage.

Arguing with Aristotle Email
The other night, we received this rather unexpected e-mail from our 14 year old son, reprinted here with his permission:
Subject: Sorry to send this to you in an e-mail…
I know re-registration for school is coming up, and I’m also aware how happy both you and Mommy are with me being there. The thing is, I have such amazing friends at the local public high school that (even though I may not show it all the time), I miss them so incredibly much, and I think about them every day wishing we had never split up. With such a perfect opportunity to continue our friendships together, it seems SO STUPID to me that we’re at different schools, when we could have all stayed together.
Every day that I’m sitting in class and I go off into a daydream, I think of all the fun we could be having together, all the times we’re missing, just so that I can be at a private school with a good reputation. The truth is, the local public high school offers just as good Honors classes, it just has a worse reputation because of some of the kids that go there. Sure I’ve made new friends here, but I’ve been hanging out with them every day when I could be hanging out with my best friends every single day.
I know you probably won’t believe me on this, but I decided to go here on a sort of an impulse, and because of the excitement of getting accepted in to such a well-spoken of school. I’ve been regretting that decision just about every day since the first day of school. I sort of feel like my friends’ and my relationships are splitting apart, just because of differences between schedules.
Also, don’t think that sending me to a private school is going to keep me out of drugs.  I mean let’s be serious: high schools will have ample amounts of drugs no matter where I go, and I’m tired of all the racism, popularity contests, and disputes over who has more money. Apparently where I go to school it’s cool to do drugs, put down others for not doing so, and so on and so forth. I’ve already found out that there’s no such thing as a perfect school, and whether it be a private or public school is just based on which families have more money.
Now, don’t think I believe that none of this won’t happen anywhere else, because I’m not stupid. It just seems crazy for me not to go to a school with people I’ve known for so long, because these last four years are my last ones before we all split up for good.
I know there are grammatical errors in here, it might not flow very well, and I probably jumped around quite a lot, but I just want to say that this came from the heart, and I mean everything I said. Please just talk to each other about this. Sorry that I sent it in an e-mail rather than in person, but I just thought I could say what I wanted on here without being interrupted.

just go over this and read it sentence by sentence.

Identifying the uses of ethos, logos, and pathos in text, like a hypothetical email from a student discussing a school change, can illuminate the writer's strategies for persuasion. These rhetorical appeals, conceived by Aristotle, are essential tools in effective communication and argumentation.

The student's request to change font colors according to the uses of ethos, logos, and pathos, as well as instances where all three appeals are used together (triple appeal), provides a practical exercise in understanding Aristotle's rhetorical appeals. Ethos (trustworthiness or credibility) can be recognized in elements where the speaker establishes their sincerity or authority on the subject, logos (logical appeal) involves the use of factual data and logical reasoning, and pathos (emotional appeal) is identified in attempts to evoke an emotional response from the target audience. Knowing when and how these appeals are employed enhances critical reading and writing skills, offering insights into the strategies used by writers to persuade their audience.

For example, in a hypothetical email from a student wanting to change schools, one might find ethos exemplified in statements that demonstrate the student's understanding or personal connection to the subject, logos in references to specific benefits of the new school, and pathos in expressions of feelings about missing friends or the social atmosphere at the public school. A statement that combines all three appeals would perhaps discuss the student's rational decision-making process, their emotional desire to be with friends, and the credibility of their experiences with both schools.

Excerpt from A Baker's Dozen David Matherne "Had everything but the panting. And the drool. Too much caffeine I suppose. Too happy." If the author wanted to change this portion, which is the BEST way to combine these sentences? "Had everything but the panting. And the drool. Too much caffeine I suppose. Too happy." A) He had caffeine and happiness but no panting or drool. B) He had everything: panting, drool, caffeine and was happy. C) He had drooling but no panting. He had caffeine and happiness. D) He had everything but the panting and the drool; he also seemed overly happy, perhaps from too much caffeine.

Answers

The answer is option D: He had everything but the panting and the drool; he also seemed overly happy, perhaps from too much caffeine.

The excerpt from "A Baker's Dozen," by David Matherne, indicates that the person has no panting or drool, but has had a lot of caffeine and has a feeling of happiness. Option A mentions the same things in a simple sentence, but alternative D is expressed in a more improved way - with two independent clauses separated by a semicolon.

Option B is incorrect because it claims that the person has everything, and option C states that he or she has drooling, which is not true.

D) He had everything but the panting and the drool; he also seemed overly happy, perhaps from too much caffeine.

Momaday discusses the “irony” of the term “New World” (pars. 3–4). What are his reasons for this characterization?

Answers

Answer: N. Scott Momaday - who is a native American himself - finds ironic that white people claimed that they were arriving into the "new world" when in reality there were ancient civilizations already living on those lands, and this claim is one that they have continued to sustain up to this day.

When Europeans arrived in 1492, there were very large Indian populations scattered all across America with a rich history and culture, an element that vastly defers the logic of the discovery of a "new world".

Answer: Momaday characterizes the early inhabitants of North America as having “had  some sense of society, of community, of cooperation and a human sense of morality, an irresistible craving for order, beauty, appropriate behavior” and as “intensely spiritual”.

Explanation: Support that characterization with examples and details from the Native American origin stories and trickster stories.

A theme is a very specific element taken from a subject, whereas a topic is a generalization of this subject. For example:

Identify Douglass’s tone and explain how this tone helps him achieve his purpose

Answers

I would love to help but I need to see the passage!!!

Frederick Douglass uses a tone shifting from decorous and respectful to critical, leveraging rhetorical appeals to religion and politics to gain trust and authority with his audience. He underscores literacy and education as pathways to freedom, illustrating a nuanced understanding of the rhetorical situation and his audience. This strategic use of tone and language serves to challenge the injustices of slavery.

Frederick Douglass's tone throughout his narrative can be characterized as a blend of decorous, respectful, and, at times, inflammatory. At first, he employs a tone of respect, describing the forefathers as 'decorous, respectful, and loyal'. Douglass's strategic use of tone seeks to gain the trust of his audience before he shifts to a more critical tone, highlighting the hypocrisy of the Fourth of July celebrations for enslaved individuals. This shift in tone is an approach to manage and navigate the feelings of his audience while effectively conveying his arguments.

Douglass's narrative is also interwoven with a masterful use of language that includes rhetorical appeals to religion and politics. He uses biblical imagery to resonate with his predominantly White American Christian audience and references the Constitution to add authority to his claims. His references to literacy and education as forms of liberation showcase Douglass as a testament to the idea of freedom through education, which is a powerful lesson on the art of persuasion and applying lessons from history.

The balance Douglass achieves in his tone, alongside his selective use of language and rhetorical strategies, illustrates his sophisticated understanding of his audience and the broader rhetorical situation he was addressing. The narrative's structure and Douglass's purposeful word choice demonstrate his commitment to literacy and education as means to challenge the injustices of slavery.

Imagine you are instructed to write a narrative constructed response related to this passage. The prompt below is provided to you. Which of the following responses would be the most appropriate to respond to the prompt?

Prompt: Consider the point of view and tone in "A Woman Who Went to Alaska" and construct a narrative that maintains the narrative qualities provided by May Kellogg Sullivan.
A) The narrative "A Woman Who Went to Alaska" is a very interesting piece about an independent woman who took on the adventure of traveling to a relatively unknown place on her own only two weeks after the railroad was opened for public transit. She demonstrates her adventurous spirit through her description of the other interesting women she finds herself traveling with both international and rich! The first-person point of view of the piece allows the reader insight into May Kellogg Sullivan's mindset as she embarked on a great journey.
B) The narrative qualities of May Kellogg Sullivan's piece include a first-person point of view and a descriptive introduction to her adventurous journey. She includes descriptions of how her father and brother arrived in Alaska to demonstrate how treacherous her journey was. Although she doesn't provide an outright description of herself, she includes descriptions of the many other interesting women who are on her boat and train thereby showing that she is also, quite fascinating. All of the narrative choices she includes help to build the reader's interest in what else her voyage might entail.
C) When I finally arrived in Alaska after my exhausting yet exhilarating voyage, I was immediately impressed by the vast landscape of mountains rising in the distance. Disembarking positioned me in a make-shift train depot near a small but bustling downtown Dawson that I had received many letters from my father and brother about. Each manuscript had described the greedy rush of men and women to profit from the gold found only a few years earlier in the area. Contrary to popular belief, and like so many of the other men and women who had uprooted themselves from their ordinary lives in other regions of the country, gold was not in abundance and mining for the treasure left many searchers empty-handed. My father and brother had not struck it rich with gold but were settling into a life of comfort since they had opened a small restaurant to serve the crowds of the growing town of Dawson.
D) I got off the train and went to look for my dad and brother. The town of Dawson was growing because there were so many new peeps looking for gold and to strike it rich. I had never been to Dawson before so I wasn't sure what direction to head in first. Even though the town wasn't very big, there were lots of people around. I decided to stop one of the first people I made eye-contact with and walked right up to him to ask about my pops. He said he had heard of the little food joint my kin had started up, and he pointed down the main street to the third building on the left. I gathered up my stuff and prepped myself for the surprise I was about to serve my dad and bro.

A. details that are presented indirectly by the author B. details that the narrator states directly in the text C. details the the reader must infer from information in the text D. details that are revealed only by examing the author’s background

Answers

Answer: The correct option is B:

Details that the narrator states directly in the text.

The author uses the third person to narrate the story, and gives specific details explicitly, explaining all the thoughts, feelings and actions that take place in the story directly. Explicit means that the reader does not have to infer or imagine the things that happen in the story because all actions are described in detail and they are certain, there are not mysteries about what must have happened because the narrator knows all the events and explains it fully in the story.
