Use the sentence clues to determine the meaning of the root word.
herb: Some mammals such as cows are herbivorous.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Herb means plants.

Explanation:

I can tell this because I used the context clues. I know that cows eat plants and that a herb is a plant. This also gives me the definition of an herbivore which is an animal that only eats plants. I hope this finds you well!

Answer 2

The root word 'herb' refers to plants, inferred from the word 'herbivorous' which describes animals that eat plants. Similarly, 'path' relates to feelings or suffering, and 'sol' to being alone, as in 'pathetic' and 'soliloquy' respectively.

Understanding the root word 'herb' can be done by analyzing the context clues in the sentence provided. The sentence mentions that certain mammals, like cows, are herbivorous which indicates that their primary food source is plant-based. Therefore, based on the context, the root 'herb' pertains to plants. Herbivores are animals that consume plants, and the term herbivorous is used to describe their plant-based diet.

Additionally, by looking at similar words and their prefixes, roots, and suffixes, we can derive meanings for various complex words. For instance, the root 'path' found in the word pathetic refers to feeling or suffering. Using the context in which it appears, the word 'pathetic' can be interpreted as pertaining to something that invokes pity or sorrow, suggesting a negative feeling or condition.

Another example is the root 'sol' found in soliloquy, which refers to being alone. When combined with the context provided, 'soliloquy' implies a speech or dramatic monologue performed by a character who is alone, expressing their thoughts aloud.

1 David couldn’t wait to get off from work, for he had an exciting weekend planned. He and his seven year-old son, Landon, were going on a camping trip. As David drove toward the Greenville suburb where Landon lived with his mother, the guilt gnawed at him. He hated that since the divorce nearly a year ago, he had not spent the quality time with Landon that he now wished he had. The two hour drive to Landon’s new home only complicated the wish for more frequent visits. David decided he was not going to dwell on the past, but instead look to the future. This weekend camping trip was just what they needed. 2 When David arrived Landon met him at the door grinning like someone who’d just won the lottery. An hour later, they were setting up camp. Before long, they headed to the creek bank with fishing poles in hand. As they each sat on a five gallon bucket, few words were spoken, but David knew that old wounds were healing. As Landon reeled in a tiny brim he looked over at his dad and said, "You know what, Dad, this is the most fun I’ve ever had." Even though his throat was tightening in an effort to hold back tears, David managed to say, "Me too, Son, me too." When Landon says, "You know what, Dad, this is the most fun I’ve ever had," the author is using the narrative technique of
A) description.

D) setting.

Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that although pacing and description are also narrative techniques, that excerpt is specifically an example of dialogue, since the author is indicating what one of the characters said to another in the course of a conversation by quoting his exact words. The word dialogue derives from the Greek dialogos, which can be translated as "conversation."

Punctuation can be used as a style device to create all of the following except

Answers

Answer:

Verb agreement.

Explanation:

Punctuation marks are used for the following: to create pauses, flow, or rhythm within a sentence or a text. The way to do this is to use commas or periods to create pauses, commas or conjunctions to create flow, commas or colons to create rhythm, etc. However, one thing that punctuation cannot do is affect verb agreement. Verb agreement means that the subject and the predicate (verb) are in the same number: if the subject is singular, the verb will also be singular; if the subject is plural, so is the verb. This depends on the subject, not on punctuation.

I'm not sure if this is right but yeah this is all I could think of

The line from the excerpt that best supports the idea that Twain is panicked is "I would hardly get the boat started to port before I would see new dangers on that side..."

The line from the excerpt that best supports the idea that Twain is panicked is: "...I would hardly get the boat started to port before I would see new dangers on that side..." In this line, Twain describes his frantic attempts to navigate the boat by constantly changing its direction ("started to port" means turning the boat to the left). However, as soon as he starts turning to one side, he notices new dangers appearing on that side, forcing him to quickly change direction again. This rapid and constant change in direction indicates a state of panic and desperation as Twain tries to avoid obstacles and hazards in the river.

This sense of panic is further reinforced by his description of "perils accumulating" and his eagerness to switch sides repeatedly ("away I would spin to the other, only to find perils accumulating to starboard and be crazy to get to port again"). These phrases emphasize the overwhelming nature of the challenges he's facing, which contributes to the idea that he is panicked and struggling to maintain control of the boat in a dangerous situation.

The repetition of the leadsman's cry, "D-e-e-p four in a bottomless crossing!" and the description of the "terror" taking Twain's breath away further highlight the intense fear and pressure he is experiencing in this moment. Overall, the passage conveys a sense of urgency, chaos, and panic as Twain navigates the treacherous waters of the river.

What the difference between a story and a article

Answers

Answer:

There isn't a lot of difference, and I suppose it mostly depends on how one might use the term "story" or "article".

Explanation:

When talking about the media, we use both terms 'news story' and 'news article'. I guess technically, news stories refer to a story about an event, like a collision or maybe some crime, while news articles might be about why your pet shouldn't be vegan. Articles I guess tend to be more informative about a certain topic, rather than recounting an event.

Regarding books or material we find online: I'd say that a story can be true, fiction, or a mix of both. Again, usually articles are informative, and most always true.

I hope this clears stuff up for you! Feel free to leave any questions in the comments :)

The difference between a story and a article is "story" means to relate or narrate about; "article" means to study or train in order to become competent, particularly in the legal profession.

What is article?

An article is a analysis on a particular subject.

Because the distinction between a narrative and an article as nouns is that a story is a series of events, either actual or imagined, or an account of such a series, whereas an article is a component or segment of anything that is connected to other parts or combined to make a structured set. The distinction between the verbs "story" and "article" is that "story" means to relate or narrate about; "article" means to study or train in order to become competent, particularly in the legal profession.

What is a cliffhanger

Answers

Answer:The ending to a story that leaves its readers in suspense

Hope this helped :)

A cliffhanger is a narrative device that leaves a story unresolved at a high point of interest and tension, compelling the audience to seek the next installment for closure. It typically occurs at the climax of a story, often incorporating dramatic twists or shocking revelations that challenge the anticipated resolution and leave a lasting impression on the audience.

A cliffhanger is a narrative technique in fiction that creates high tension and leaves the audience in a state of suspense by ending a chapter, section, or book without resolution of the plot. This tactic compels readers to continue reading to find out what happens next. Often, a cliffhanger occurs at the climax of a story or an episode, where the reader or viewer has been led to expect some sort of resolution. Instead, they’re presented with a sudden twist or a shocking revelation that upends expectations and leaves the plot hanging until the next installment.

Skilful writers manipulate the reader's anticipation by providing peaks, twists, and moments of final tension where the course of the story appears to change dramatically. Whether it’s utilizing shocking clickbait titles that draw readers in or crafting scenes ripe with suspense, authors aim to leave an imprint on the reader’s mind. The aim is not just to surprise the audience but to leave them with something that resonates, such as a resonant image, thought-provoking dialogue, or situational irony that harks back to earlier points in the narrative.

While some readers may rush to the end of a book to find closure, a cliffhanger defies this impulse and extends the anticipation, sometimes across books or seasons of television. A cliffhanger can also serve as a powerful tool for authors to ensure their stories persist in the memory of their audience, long after the book has been put down or the credits have rolled. It’s a way of extending the narrative beyond the immediate conclusion, prompting continued thought and discussion.

Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

Lightning and volcanos started human fires.

Answers

Answer:

lightning and volcanos started human fires

Answer:

I believe the best answer to be option C) Getting fire from nature was challenging.

Explanation:

Even though the second paragraph mentions lightning and volcanos as fire starters in nature, that is not the main idea. They are mentioned for two reasons: first, to show which forces of nature were able to make fire; second, to show readers how difficult it was for man to get that fire. The focus of the second paragraph is the fact that not only man had to wait for nature's kindness - if you could call volcanos and lightnings kind -, but he would also have the challenge of transporting such fire all the way back home. In ancient times, men would actually risk their lives to do so. In conclusion, getting fire from nature was a most difficult task since man had to wait for nature to provide the fire, and then he had to carry it and watch it to prevent it from being put out.
