The American people worked the land from immense prosperity to the
point of agricultural exhaust and collapse. In the context of this text, who's
in control: man or nature? Cite evidence from this text, your own experience, and other literature, art, or history in your answer ( the text is Out of the Dust)
Final answer:
In the context of the book 'Out of the Dust,' nature ultimately exerts control over man, as seen during the Dust Bowl where over-cultivation by humans led to soil exhaustion and environmental disaster. This illustrates the delicate balance between human ambition and nature's limits.
Explanation:
The question revolves around whether man or nature is in control, specifically in the context of agricultural practices leading to soil exhaustion and collapse, as described in the book Out of the Dust.
While humans have certainly exerted a great deal of influence over their environment through farming and the cultivation of land, the Dust Bowl represents a powerful instance where nature had an upper hand. This event exemplified the limits of human control when faced with environmental forces.
Initially, Americans worked the land to achieve immense prosperity, benefiting from the ability to cultivate fertile soil which provided subsistence and even luxury. However, this over-cultivation without proper soil conservation methods led to agricultural exhaust and the catastrophic Dust Bowl.
It was a stark lesson that nature has its boundaries and, when pushed beyond its limits, can cause massive upheavals that jeopardize human endeavors.
Throughout history, and particularly during the Dust Bowl as detailed by Caroline Henderson, the conflict between the human desire for expansion and the sustainable limits of nature became apparent.
Literary works like John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath reaffirm this by illustrating the dire consequences for families who are forced to abandon their overworked lands. These narratives serve as vivid reminders of the often delicate balance between human ambition and the natural world's capacity to sustain it.

You're mostly stuck inside, you are home from school and the coronavirus pandemic is making the future seem less certain by the day. The coronavirus is a flu-like illness that first arose in China. The virus has now infected people around the globe. Like 27 percent of Americans, you might seek comfort in a familiar place: the refrigerator.
Food can be one of the easiest and most immediate ways to make ourselves feel better in stressful times. While enjoying our food is a good thing, experts say emotionally eating lots of food with little nutritional value can weaken our immune systems and worsen our moods at a time when it's especially important to stay positive and protect our bodies.
If we want to be able to feel better, given the situation that we're in, we have to think about how we want to fuel our body in ways that we can stay more at ease," said Eva Selhub, a doctor with expertise in stress, resilience and mind-body medicine.
Why do my eating habits matter right now?
Selhub says that people may feel guilty or shameful for eating highly processed foods with a lot of sugar. Eating these foods can also cause inflammation in the body that increases fatigue, anxiety and depression. Selhub added that our bodies have various ways of connecting our stomachs to our brains, so eating nutritious foods can help control our moods.
How can I tell if I'm eating because of emotion and not because of hunger?
Eating as a result of stress tends to be an automatic instinct, like putting your hand into a bag of potato chips without thinking about it, said Deanna Minich, a nutritionist with the American Nutrition Association. Physical hunger lasts longer and is more receptive to a variety of foods, rather than just foods with little nutrition.
How can I prevent or limit emotional eating in this uncertain time?
Although food makes us feel better by releasing dopamine and serotonin in our brains, Selhub said the effect wears off quickly. To stop emotional eating, she suggested doing a gut-check before you reach for a snack: "Am I about to eat because I'm physically hungry, or because I feel stressed or sad?"
If the answer is the latter, Selhub said you should consider turning to other sources of comfort: breathing exercises, movement, spirituality, social interactions, hobbies or time in nature, among others. Stick to your normal eating schedule of two or three
meals a day, even if your daily routine has changed, she said.
"Whether you're alone or with other people, make it a ritual of nurturing - that you're nurturing yourself, that you're fueling yourself," Selhub said.
For extra help if you want to stay on track with trying to get in shape or lose weight, she suggested finding or creating an online support group.
What if anxiety has the opposite effect on me and I struggle to eat enough?
Although many people eat extra when they feel anxious, you may have trouble eating at all. Stress can trigger in your body an elevated physiological state as if you were facing an immediate danger, like early humans may have felt when being chased by a lion, Selhub said.
To digest food properly, we need a relaxed digestive system, Minich said. Warm teas can help your body loosen up, while protein shakes and electrolyte packets provide energy.
At the very least, Minich said you should drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. To return to regular eating patterns, though, she said it's important to address the underlying stress, like by physically moving or doing a simple meditation.
What should I be trying to eat during this public-health crisis?
Making good food choices starts when you're scanning the - hopefully still stocked - grocery-store shelves and deciding what to take home, Minich said. To the extent that you can buy fresh, colorful foods, you should, she said.
Absent the option of purchasing fresh produce and meat, Minich said frozen almost always beats canned when it comes to nutrition. Frozen food is preserved in close to its original state and usually has little interaction with the plastic it's stored in, she said, whereas canned food touches its metal container and the plasticizer used to seal it. Canned food is also usually stored in a high-salt or high-sugar solution.
Minich also suggested using spices to reduce stress-inflicted inflammation and eating foods with vitamin C to strengthen your immune system. Now is a good time to share recipes with friends and family, she said, and to make sure you're also paying attention to other aspects of your health, such as moving your body and getting enough sleep.
Ultimately, Minich said eating well heightens our sense of well-being, increases our curiosity and makes us happier.
"And I think this is the time that we need more well-being and happiness," she said.

The Flags of Georgia
Elizabeth Kibler
1Over the state’s long history, Georgia has flown many different flags. During the Revolutionary War, Georgia’s militias created flags to identify their units. Later, Georgians flew unofficial state flags. These flags were not exactly the same, but most of them included the state seal, which was created in 1799.
2Georgia and other southern states seceded, or left, the rest of the United States, known as the Union, in 1861. Soon afterward, these states formed the Confederate States of America. While in the Confederacy, Georgians flew the Confederate flag. The Stars and Bars—as it was known—looked similar to the United States flag. It had two thick red stripes, one thick white stripe, and a blue field in the top-left corner. The blue field contained a circle of seven white stars. The stars represented the seven states in the Confederacy. Soon after the Civil War began, Confederate soldiers noticed that the Stars and Bars caused confusion on the battlefield. The flag looked too similar to the American flag. Therefore, during battle, the Confederate states flew the Confederate battle flag. This flag had a red background with crossed blue stripes. The blue stripes contained thirteen white stars.
3After the Civil War, Georgia had a number of different flags. Many Georgians flew unofficial state flags. These flags had a blue background with the Georgia coat of arms in the center. In 1879, Georgia adopted an official state flag that was similar to the Stars and Bars, except the blue field was plain, without stars. In 1902, the Georgia State Assembly changed the flag to include the coat of arms in the blue field. The Assembly made another change in 1914 when they added the year 1776—the year the United States declared its independence—into the coat of arms. The flag changed yet again in the 1920s. This change replaced the coat of arms on the flag with the state seal.
4During the 1950s, the civil rights movement took place in Georgia and the rest of the South. At this time, some Georgians suggested replacing the red and white stripes of the Georgia state flag with the Confederate battle flag. In 1956, Georgia adopted this new state flag, but it was not without its problems. The new flag increased racial division. Some Georgians believed that the flag was not appropriate because of its ties to the Civil War and slavery. These people wanted to bring back the pre-1956 state flag. For close to forty years, arguments about the state flag continued. Some government buildings in Atlanta even refused to fly the state flag.
5It wasn’t until January 2001 that Georgia adopted a new state flag. This flag had a blue background with the state seal in the middle. The bottom of this flag had a gold banner that displayed other flags that had flown over Georgia in the past. Although Georgia had a new flag, the disagreement was not over. People who liked the 1956 flag were outraged. They even staged protests against the new flag. Some people believed that the 2001 flag was too detailed, making it unattractive. Finally, in 2003, Georgia got another flag. This flag looked similar to the Stars and Bars, but the blue square included the coat of arms surrounded by thirteen white stars. Although this flag was more popular than the 2001 flag, not everyone was pleased. Today, Georgia still flies the 2003 flag.
